In my long life I've never really understood why subtracting a negative gives a positive. I've tried to visualize the negative positive scale diagram ... but the concept of a "debt" as a minus being removed to give a positive makes sense. Where were you Mr. J when I needed you fifty years ago?

The problem displayed in the above mentioned video i see is 12+ -7 = 5 (positive five). i get that.
Now ive seen another problem in front of me that say 11+ -33 = -22. So my question is, at what point will the given answer take the sign of the bigger number? im confused a bit

no matter the sign, always use the bigger number, so in this case i dont use absolute value. just subtract them, and use the BIGGER numbers sign, ipthe absolute value step is unecessary! ik im late

Think of it like money you have 5 dollars but you owe someone 9 you pay them the 5 dollars but your still in debt 4 so the 4 would be negative
