I'm glad someone finally explained a little about what the problem MEANS. By explaining the meaning behind 4 + ( -7 ), it helped me understand the REASON for doing the problem in the first place. Very helpful to know WHY you're doing something!

Have been out of school for, ahem, a few years. When your video popped up I decided it was time for some refreshment. Each night I watch a video just to make sure I remember the basics. You make things easier by far than this “new and better” method they are using to teach my grandson. Thank you for reminding this older lady I still got it when it comes to math.

My wife is preparing to take the GED test, and so, of course, she asked for my help. I took a lot of math in high school and college, but I was in high school over twenty years ago, and my last college class was over ten years ago. She came to me saying, "If I have two negatives, I subtract." I replied, "No." "Then why am I getting the right answer?!?" She countered. Then, during the ensuing debate, it came out that she was talking about subtracting integers, which, to me, is three negatives, not two. I couldn't remember ever subtracting two negatives, so I came to UA-cam and found your video. AEWSOME!!! It might be because I love to write, but I loved the idea of it being a story and the third negative being like a double negative in a sentence. That analogy really helped me. THANKS!!!

Method#1: Add the opposite.
Method#2: Use a number line.
I think this steps here are pretty simple for me.

I was in special Ed and I was doing 5th grade math but after I graduated I wanted to know all the math I wasn’t able to learn in school so far I’ve learned integers,square roots and algebra the next thing I’ll have to learn is percentages in my math book I bought all the spectrum math books,McGraw hill ,Sylvan,workbook for dummies, grades 1-8 practice problems workbooks (forgot the name of those books) it’s easier to understand it now then it was nearly 12 years ago and your videos have helped me out a lot

Amazing instruction!! I'm in college now and taking developmental math ( because i haven't taken algebra since 1981). Trying to re-learn something I haven't used in 40 years can be daunting...Your instruction is very good I'm actually learning 😅 🙃
Because the college has a program where you take developmental math and college algebra with same professor, I'm more confident that I'll pass the class starting on January 31.

16:28 how do you know if your subtracting the number?? And not adding? Do you have to subtract for all the subtracting integer math problems or for some do you have to add?

You are absolutely right. Most of the instructors today don't care. They're there for a paycheck, and a few understand if you observe it okay. If you don't next. I know that for a fact. I am 45 years old. I'm going back to school. And I know for a fact when I was in school the teachers didn't care.

This helped me how to make integers I know how to do integers but not how to make intigers
I understand you prefer the number line method for conceptual understanding, but what happens when they have -63 + 42? are they supposed to draw all of these tick marks on a number line? This is where using the absolute value method is quicker and more useful. The number line method and counters are used to lay the conceptual foundation for the absolute value method. I can't budget with a number line.
I scripted this video for the beginner level, thats why I used the number line method. 😊 In the future I am planning to upload a video explaining the absolute method. 😊🌟
