We spent a few days touring Lisbon with her to learn about how she packs, why she travels, and what she's learned from over 3 years of global travel.

What she's found is that she can cultivate a practice of living in the moment, being curious and passionate about her life and surroundings no matter where she is in the world.

Same. Was disappointed this video was about something else. Also odd to describe carrying three bags, one of which is 45L, as minimalist. It looks like around 70L total, which is the opposite of minimalist.

Are you delusional? Minimalism never was about living in poverty it is about sticking to whatever you need amd regularly use and actually like to have. If you live in a place with 4 seasons it will look completely different to somewhere wherebit is warm all the time for example

I’m not a minimalist, I’ve traveled the world but have a home base. I haven’t ‘lived’ there for 3 years but will ...one day. I may not be home for months and then touch down for only a few days, but it’s still home. There’s family heirlooms, baby clothes and my souvenir magnets ‘cluttering’ up the refrigerator door. I know where the floor creaks, what that odd sound is and the scent of my linen closet. Traveling doesn’t mean you need to ‘sell everything’ or that you need to give up the home you’ve worked hard to make and where you’ve years of memories. Other people are enjoying my home (and pets!) while I’m ‘wandering the Earth’...for awhile.
Yeah... The 'sell everything, own nothing' is a bit extremist but to each their own. Or maybe I'm just jealous.
It is not practical to live wandering like a nomad up to an old age, especially when one has family or pets to take care of. When one is getting older, maintaining an active physical life and an excellent healthy body will be much more challenging.
I'm a minimalist. Started this journey more than 3 years ago. I'm still getting rid off and selling stuff that I don't need. I admire this girl: living with 3 bags only is such an achievement. The sense of freedom you have when you have nothing is amazing. Things are a prison, get rid of them. All you need are emotions, not things. Let the emotions take over your things. This girl also realised that a Monday is a Monday everywhere. You can work remotely but you still have to work. Do not think that remote life is a paradise, it's not. You will have less free time the one you usually have when you are "at home", that's because you need to spend time to organise yourself every time you move, to find a comfortable place to work.

When i watch these kind of videos , women travelling by themselves all over the world , a part of me is envious . I wish it was easier for us back then when we were at that age . So many restraints back then especially where i grew up . Parents , societal norms etc etc. But i too have been on a tremendous journey ...meeting the person who i eventually married , having my beautiful kids , travelling and exploring the world with them , inspiring them to be kind , strong , caring and productive members of society , volunteering with the underprivileged . I am content . Bottom line ....its all about that contentment in life . Its all about inspiring people . We all find our ways to do so . Bon voyage to these strong inspirational women .

Hi Zoe! I’ve only used Eagle Creek packing cubes - because I haven’t needed to replace them! Always a good thing :) I recommend the compression version. The cubes also help keep my clothes organized. For example, I have a cube just for colder weather clothes so if I’m somewhere warm, I don’t need to open it :)

Great interview! I've also been traveling and working as a digital nomad for the past 3-5 years and have been a minimalist with carry on only luggage recently as well. The biggest difference is that my costs of living are actually 1/4 of what they were back in the USA as even though I also stay in AirBnb's, I always stay for 1 month stints as I get 40% off.
I also spend months in cheaper countries such as Thailand where my monthly rent may only be $200 a month and meals are $3. I'm currently in Eastern Europe for the summer, traveling with hand luggage as well.

I've haven't had a job that required travel like this but I have lived out of just one bag for around a year before and it was good. I have always had very few possessions and even now that I have just six plastic totes and a couple of bags. Honestly I only really use about a single totes worth of stuff now and have been for years. It weights you down and I don't want to be tied down to stuff. Been like this for me for 25 + years and now in my 50s I am even more convinced living with less stuff is better for me and the world. I'm reminded of a saying I read as a boy from a Taoist text about 'my home is where I lay my head '. Safe travels young lady and continue to be in the moment. Peace

The human mind is a funny thing. A person in a mcmansion and a 3 car garage filled with knick knacks could not fathom how to live this way. Yet, given enough time and desire, anyone can attain this level of minimalism. What is possible and impossible is simply the openness of mind.

Traveling is GREAT we can all agree with that and I admire her in so many ways. However, A Key point she was making, she even wrote a book about it, is that traveling isn't the answer.
If you are unhappy or unfulfilled in your soul.... traveling great but it is still not the answer. There is no need to look outside yourself for the answer. Sit quietly with yourself and look inside. Sadly, most people here will miss the point entirely.

Last year i went to the exotic island of Cuba for my first solo travel experience ever and even though i enjoyed the trip and had a lot of fun deep inside i was sad and felt empty and ended up drinking a lot and was never sober... Always had a hangover from the night before in those 10 days. When you are not in peace or love yourself you carry that negative weight everywhere you travel to and don't really enjoy travelling in its full potential. Blessings.....
This is absolutely true. Just a few months ago I was feeling depressed. I was hating my work, even if I was doing a lot of money working at home. My line manager was an incompetent old prick, and I wasn't happy to stay home in front of a computer the whole day, alone. I left, I have been on the market 3 months. I have refused multiple opportunities till I found the one I wanted. I got a job that I like, I make more money, I have great colleagues, my manager is a smart guy, he is younger than me, and I manage myself 40 people. Now I feel happy. All the answer are inside you.

For me (although I look forward to the traveling), the preparation process is actually the ‚therapeutic‘ thing. Getting rid (slowly) of 15 years worth of accumulated stuff, paring everything down to the bare necessities and really, consciously (maybe for the first time in my life) thinking about what’s really important to me and why...that’s the most important part of the journey.

Love hearing different perspectives on travel. I think everyone has different circumstances as to how they put travel into their lifestyle, whether it be while they’re working and being young, versus retiring, early and traveling without the thought of working any longer. My husband and I started pretty young and our kids are adults. We now want to sell our big home and allow the kids to own their own home as my husband and I venture off in retirement with no debt, no work and a hefty retirement and savings. We don’t want to wait until we are too old and no longer mobile to enjoy the beauty of travel. We love traveling and met many people along the way who are digital nomads, as well as retired couples who are now travelers full-time. I think it’s great to see many people accommodate their lives to what really makes them happy, and hear all of their wonderful stories.

LOL, I lived this way for six years with a bunch of other guys....in the US Navy. Now 15 years later I have my house paid off and I fill it up with my dogs and whatever I want. Also, my wife can stay too :)

A way to make the vitamins take less space is to remove the labels and put the pills and the labels into little zip lock bags you can find in a dollar store.
Would she have trouble travelling oversea with those though, through customs etc? Here, you have to have them in their original packaging plus a script or letter from your Dr, even for vitamins.
@@seratonin7004 I've never had to show a doctor script traveling internationally. Once I was warned by us cbp about buying vitamins in Mexico. That was silly.
Also, if you have the label I don't know why the package would matter. People could always put illegal drugs into legal packaging.

Carrying the original label should resolve most problems. Apparently gel caps are considered liquids so have to be put in your 3-1-1 bag (us). Of course rules for other countries could be different. In most cases worst case would be having to throw them out, but I suppose some countries could be worse.
@@andreawisner7358 that's why they want a label on it with your name and the prescribing Dr, plus a Dr's letter.
Of course they don't check everyone, just like customs, and rule out the authentic using these types of tools. I assume they'd test if unsure. Maybe you just got lucky? I've had mine checked.
These were the requirements listed when I visited the USA, parts of Europe, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines. Just because they didn't check yours doesn't necessarily it isn't a requirement or they won't check others. I would rather not offer advice that might put someone in that position, so I would suggest checking this prior to travel.

Traveling light is great, but be aware that most airlines will only allow you 2 carry-ons, so she would have to check that third bag, even if it's small. They're really cracking down on this in recent years, counting purses etc. as bags.

I have to say my husband and I are sitting here watching this and want to jump through the screen and shake her while steaming "HOW do you find those jobs?!?". She said it was easy, except we've been looking for years, I'm not joking years, for remote digital work and it either won't pay our or they need a very specific degree or skill set that we don't have or can't get. HOW??

I‘m planning for next spring and already started the process of getting rid of a lot of my stuff. It’s a lot...even though, I only live in a (big) 2 room flat.
It’s so weird, realizing how few of your belongings you actually need. I already sold/gave away so much and it hardly made a dent. 15 years of accumulated stuff. It’s a very satisfying process though, learning to live with less and less.

The toughest part about my many years of permanent, international, travel/work was postal mail. I owned nothing and owed nothing, but still had to have a place to receive my passport, income taxes, credit cards, insurance, driver's license, (and 25 other entities). Finding a reliable person to check my mail once a week, and not eventually skip three weeks, leaving me with cancelations, late fees and worse, was impossible. I had the "re-direct all mail to someone else" routine down after losing my phone number a couple times and a collection agency coming after me (also a postal issue, which I soon resolved). Curious about Jacqueline's solution to this.
The most fun part of permanent travel/work, was making time to learn some of the new language before arriving in the new country. My time was before the internet had every resource to learn a complete language. Reading books, writing words, numbers, time, direction, distance, food, verb conjugation, honorifics if applicable, vulgar words to know when to find safety or yell out for help. It made the next location much more enjoyable than pointing at a phrase book/app/menu and holding up fingers. Read (listen to podcast of) David Sedaris, "Me talk pretty one day" a glimpse at his learning a foreign language, and his observations of travelers who did not.
The second-toughest part of my permanent international travel/work was sitting next to someone traveling with "three small bags" that really were not small, even too big to bring into the cabin, but got jammed into the overhead, displacing three or four normal carry-on bags, or stuffed under MY feet making my knees meet my chin, rather than checking ONE normal bag at the ticket counter like the rest of us trying to have a "comfortable" 15 hours ride. I scheduled all my travel and lodging, checked ONE normal bag (because a second bag would cost extra). I never missed a flight or a connection, and never saw a good reason to try to carry everything into the cabin at the expense of everyone around you.

1. My sister, who I pay as my personal assistant on many tasks, receives/monitors my mail. Over time, it’s now dramatically less than it was. I proactively contact people who mail things to me if I think electronic communication may be an option (think: charities I donate to, my accountant sending me invoices, etc.) I simply say, “I want to get your communication, but I spend most of my time abroad. I’d hate to miss something important. Can you email me instead?” Most companies/people have been really kind about finding a solution. I rarely have mail from the US government.
2. Yes, I agree! I am learning Spanish and Portuguese right now. I agree that it’s a more enjoyable stay when you learn! I’ll check out that podcast - thank you.
3. I check my large bag. I bring a purse and my regular size backpack (not backpacker backpack) with me onto planes. Keeps things simple for others/myself and in-line with airline policy :)

Greens powder and supplements (doctor recommended since I’ve eaten plant-based my entire life) are really nice for me to have. They definitely take up room, but I’m glad I have them.
I put this packing info in another comment so excuse the copy and paste...
If I had to guess, I’d say 75% is clothing, 10% is work/tech stuff (chargers, headphones, laptop, notebooks), and 15% is toiletries. The clothing consists of things like fold-up flats (Tieks), 3 pairs of jeans, 3 thin sweaters, gym clothes, 2 pullovers, 7 or so long and short sleeve t-shirts, etc.
I typically go where it’s warm. If I had to guess, those percentages haven’t changed much in nearly 4 years.
I used to be really into packing tips and learning how others pack, but now I just do my own thing and worry less! If I need something, I buy it. If I don’t have room for a souvenir, I admire it on the shelf and just walk away! :)

Other than the size of the bag, most airlines also insist on the bag not weighing more than 7 Kgs. Does your packed bag weigh less than that?
Travel by it’s nature is minimalist, I don’t see the point of not using luggage. Also very disappointing that she did not mention her daily or monthly costs. Air BNBs are super expensive not at all cheap like the advertisements would have you believe. She must be paying a fortune especially for good internet locations worldwide. Whenever I travel I always look for AirBNBs 1st in hopes of finding that affordable spot. What somewhat affordable is staying in room shares, but I get the feeling this Chief Operating Officer is not sharing rooms..

Yeah, I think we have to remember that it's all about priorities and what you can realistically do.
US$50/month for 40 sq ft (8 ft tall) storage facility. Cheaper if you go to a tiny town, as low as US$100/year. I travel/worked for nine years. No need for a home.

@@mizzbella9324 thanks, hope you (everyone!) get the same opportunity to explore. It took a toll on social circles. I left that job and the high-tech work, now I just stay/work locally in a new town doing odd jobs and lots of volunteer work. Different, but enjoyable and fulfilling. Peace.
