Ravus was the character that needed more screen time. After getting the full picture, he came out as an awesome character. It's just sad that you need to read between the lines to get that story.
Tom Same thing and once again too bad we didn't see it, or at least talk to the dude at least once. Kingsglaive and the trailers hyped the emperor up to be important and he barely existed. Ravus got killed off screen with no real chance to interact with Noctis, they threw in a obviously late production note by his corpse to try to explain it away. The scientist guy made the magitek soldier system (basically Hojo) and created Prompto as his super solder son (which is barely hinted at aside from having the same tattoo as the magitek soldiers), but nope we don't even see him.
I'd like to see more on what happened to the Empire before you get there and its infested. It just felt so underwhelming. Ravus, the Emperor, the Head Scientist, everyone you see in the scene where Ravus is made Commander. Seeing the internal fall of the Empire would make the story feel a little more complete.
Ravus Timeline in FFXV 1 In KINGSGLAIVE, tried the ring, burnt his arm. Then picked up Regis’s sword, rendezvous with the Imperial Army. 2 Returned to Gralea, got a prothetic arm, plus Magitek modification (hence the heterochromia) 3 Became the Supreme Commander, met with colleagues in front of the Emperor 4 Lead the army to takeover Lucis. Prepared to take down Titan. Pretended to be searching for Lunafreya, while actually giving her instructions on how to hide(revealed by letters besides his dead body in Ch.13). 5 Instructed the army to confiscate Regalia, waited to met with Noctis when the latter tried to retrieve his car. Ravus was intending to give Noctis his father’s sword (after a fight, more like a trial of Noctis’s power) when they met in front of Regalia, but Ardyn’s sudden appearance cut him short. Ravus lost his only chance to give the Sword to Noctis.(revealed by letters besides his dead body in Ch.13) 6 Went to Altissia with Ardyn. Prepared to kill Leviathan. Went to see Lunafreya at the First Secretary’s estate, and refuse to deliver the ring to Noctis on Luna’s behalf. (If you take a careful look, that flashback scene where Ravus held Luna’s hand and gave her a pep talk took place at the First Secretary’s estate in Altissia) Then Ravus stand in the rain, lied to Ardyn when Ardyn asked if Ravus had spoken to Lunafreya. 7 After the battle with Leviathan, Luna died. (After this point of time is the real plot hole)Ravus was said to be punished for his failure in Altissia and executed. It was said that he rebelled against the Empire, so the Empire destroyed Tenebrae. (But what is said in radios and newspapers may not be what truly happened, plus the Deamon Outbreak in Gralea makes everything more enigmatic) The only thing we know for sure now is that in Zegnautus Keep, he put up a fight against somebody or something unknown before he died. Ravus’s plot line is basically one of an undercover spy. (After he was refused by the Ring and changed his mind, finally decided to help his sister, of course. ) His true intention could only be revealed if you put his events in chronologic order. And finally realized that he is actually a great character with such depth and potential. What a pitiable waste.
Ann Strife my favourite character is Umbra, every time he appears puts the biggest smile on my face, weird as it sounds, defo the chocobos and then Prompto. 😉
Ann Strife I got the limited edition soundtrack yesterday. it has video montages to each tune on bluray. lost love is basically an umbrafest! I almost can't handle watching it all the way through. I want to squeeze him. but storywise I'm so sad for him, he's all alone 😞
"So much potential" seems to be a reoccuring theme with FFXV. The Starscourge, Prompte as an MT and so many unexplored characters. These are all extremly interesting yet not explored at all.
It would've been cool if there was a rivalry between Ravus and Noctis like there was between squall and seifer in FF8. The battles that could've taken place in 15 would've gave Ravus more screen time and development
I LOVE that you did an analysis of Ravus! He is very much one of my favourite characters and I have a few theories of my own that may support the two questions you had left behind by the end of the video. 1. Ravus's hatred of Lucis. Now, the Ultimania states that Tenebrae was invaded by the Empire nearly 400 years ago, but has only remained autonomous because of the Oracle line. Due to this, the royal family must have known that there was little point in betraying Niflheim or going behind their backs. Even so, Queen Sylva invited Regis and Noctis - the royalty of Niflheim's one, true obstacle - to their lands. The Empire took advantage of this to try to kill them while out from under their wall. Therefore, Ravus's mother wouldn't have died (along with many others and Tenebrae's autonomy) if Regis had never come. Ravus, being only sixteen years old, was then left to act as a bridge between the Empire and the people of Tenebrae in order to maintain peace and protect what was left of his country. This is a lot to ask of one so young, especially one faced with such great tragedy. Naturally, he's raging on the inside, but he can't be angry at the Empire - they're protecting his people and his little sister. He definitely couldn't turn his rage on his late mother for inviting the Lucian royals. So the only place left to turn is Lucis itself. He lets his rage focus there, venting it as needed in order to remain sane. As you say, he goes on to join the military and now covets the Ring of the Lucii, which holds the power to avenge his mother, reclaim his throne, and save his sister all at once. I don't think it was ever about being the King of Light, so much as it was protecting Luna. She was all he had, but she was blind to his point of view and could not understand why he loathed Regis so much. They two of them grew distant, but, as you see in Kingsglaive, she calls him out on this and accuses him of being nothing more than a dog. In the end, he walks away because he *knows she's right,* but there's nothing he can do about it yet. 2. The other question you left open were the two flashback scenes regarding Ravus's support to Luna and, by extension, Noctis. As I see it, he has accepted Noctis as the destined King of Light, but is unwilling to go as far as lose his precious sister to him. He offers to help, encourages her to pass on the ring, all with the intent of making her live. If she has his protection and the goal of seeing the ring to Noctis, then she'll find the strength to keep living... or so he hopes. 3. I'd also like to add something overlooked. It's obvious that Ravus loves his precious little sister and would do literally anything for her - even lock her in her room to protect her from Niflheim and support the man he loathes. However, knowing how much he hates Regis, Luna and Nyx arrive in time to see Ravus burning after donning the Ring of the Lucii. But what does Luna do? She gives him one look, then runs straight to Regis's side. She completely ignores the brother that would do literally ANYTHING for her, and chooses to aid the man he's focused his rage upon. Even so, after Ravus has lost his arm, his pride, his hope to save his country, and even his own appearance overnight, he STILL chooses to aid Luna with everything he has. In conclusion, Ravus is my favourite because he is as well-developed as you say. Admittedly, I had sort of passed over him the first time I played FFXV, as I had not seen Kingsglaive yet and had no idea who he was. It wasn't until much later that I looked back and thought so deeply into his story. Again, thank you for recording and sharing this! Ravus needs all the love he can get and this video is incredibly well done! -Valk
It was the notes Luna found around his body in the capital that really got me looking at Ravus beyond what we've assumed. It was a great revelation when the connection between trying to wear the ring and keeping Regis' sword for Noctis wasn't just a continuity error but rather the fact Luna changed his mind. I liked Ravus from the beginning more due to the fact he had a pretty awesome design, but I found myself enjoying him so much more once he got something so few in the Canon story of FFXV got, full and all encompassing character transformation.
Bravo Darryl. This was really well done. I appreciate the closer look at Ravus' character, because he DID have more to him than what appeared superficially, and it's a shame that there was so much potential for him not put to use. But what they did offer, well, as you so graciously put in your own words and opinions, there's more to Ravus than meets the eye. Ugh, it'd simply be wonderful if you could run through as many characters as you could in these analysis videos. Ignis is certainly a top choice for me though. Luna too, if I'm being honest. Great job Darryl!
I cant get past his misplaced anger. I can understand being angry Regis didnt save his mother and Noctis for needing so much protection, but you can never convince me that he had 0 anger towards the people who actually killed his mother for all those years he worked with them. Everything that follows are choices made because his character is forced to, not because its what a person would do in his situation. He might as well had been mind controlled all his life.
Nice, someone should make a video of all of Ravus's scenes in actual chronological order, the game just puts them all in the wrong order which makes it confusing as to who's side he's on, and makes his change of heart seem way more sudden and tacked on than it actually is.
You’re amazing! Great analysis! It’s a shame though that it takes so much discussion and analysis to simply appreciate a character... or to get a taste of their true intentions and personalities.
Great video Darryl! I think it was a missed opportunity to not make it so Noctis had interactions with a reformed Ravus in Chapter 13 or any time before, perhaps even joining up as a temporary party. I personally love characters that serve the bad side but eventually align with the party. A suggestion I have for a video would be a solid analysis of Gladio v. Noctis, perhaps even combining it with justifications for (or against, not sure how you feel) Noctis and Luna's romance.
Nice video! :) It was interesting to hear your thoughts on this character bc many people didn't understand his motives. I would love to see more content like this. Especially a character / story review for Prompto (mainly bc he's my favorite character) ♥
okay nice video but here is my problem with Ravus , when he tried to wear the ring in kingsglaive and burnt himself .. Luna took the ring and tried to help King Regus. She didn't even look at her brother Ravus. The scene where Ravus tells Luna that she herself must deliver the ring and inspire Noctis makes no sense to me, yes he had a change of heart but why ? Did Luna even care about Ravus or his opinion ? I think not!!
Plus he sucked his pride and helped ignis when the empire attacks Leviathan in episode ignis. He’s so shock when he finds out what happened to Luna. I cried so much
Yes please do Igns. I actually agree with this video. I liked him towards the end when he was in those scenes with Luna and really was looking forward to how he and Noctis could talk things out but sadly that wasn't to be.
In regaurd to the possibility of "New Bosses" While I don't want to get my hopes up, it would be nice if they slipped a fight into that first encounter with Ravus at the base. All they'd have to do is slightly alter the scene, insert the fight, then have Ardyn show up after a certain amount of time has passed or once a certain amount of Noctis' or Ravus' HP has been depleted then continue the rest of the scene as it was.
He just came across my attention and I realized that I think I really like this character. I was sad to find out he died like so many characters in FF. I wish they would stop killing off the good ones that are worth watching!
Despite the need for more exposition, it tears me up seeing Daemon Ravus' reveal on replays. The full tragedy sets in when the whole tale is considered
I agree with a majority of what was said in the video. I think once you look again you start to get it more for sure. This also opened my eyes as to the reason Ravus held so much hatred toward Regis. I would have never thought of it in the way this video stated. However, I will never be able to wrap my head around the idea that his hatred only went to Regis, and so he joins the very people that attacked his home and killed his mother. He literally joined his family killers, and while standing in a room with both Regis and Glauca (who murdered his mother in front of his very eyes), his hate is still with Regis. It's just an ODD part of the story that just never made sense to me, and can never be fixed.
Also you managed to put into words what I partially but didn't fully understand with Ravus. And it was a bad move on he developers part not to have more scenes to detail this. I think they might've relied too much on people watching kingsglaive
Agree with what you said, but for me it was actually self evident but just vague. What i would really like to know, is how far his fealty to the empire went. We could assume from the hints that despite the hatred towards the lucii and king regis, he was all along an agent for good. That was effectively a mole (and a good one with a good reason to hide his cover) that meant to save his sister and kingdom from within the empire (hence why he tried the ring). OR was he a genuine Commander, who became a changed soul from seeing his sisters dying wish and dedication. Or was it because he saw what the empire was going to do with the domination of everyone and the use of the crystal for evil that he suddenly changed? And the invasion on Altissia, if he had changed his mind by the time Noctis reached Luna, and he was in change of the invasion, was the massive loss because he sacrificed them to sae his sister, or because he wanted them to fail in slaying the Hydreaon because he had changed allegiance to supporting Noctis? Or was he still an empire puppet that just lost an entire fleet that was still undecided in who to support. Why didn't he flee before being put to death if he meant to escape? Those points we don't know as its never properly addressed across the film and game, and hence why his character is so confusing! But something you missed the whole ring of power thing from lord of the rings. The ring, the ring bearer, are entwined just by contact. The problem here is not the game as such, as much as it was Kingsglaive; Although in the film, you see clearly and repeatedly the effect the ring has on wearers, but you don't see that the weight of the rings power immediately starts to affect Luna. Or it should, but they miss a beat there. She looks almost fine for it. But thats what is killing her, the ring and the power to perform the rites, it's basically the ring overpowering even the oracles lineage, even faster than it does the Calems. (i'm guessing because she was such a strong character that was an allowed oversight in the story depth). You can just assume she dealt with the weight by herself and quietly, as the cut scene shows only her brother seems to be aware.
good video, good insight, even if i think the most of it had to be an understanding from sources other than the game and KG, because, when it comes to it, Lunas' sacrifice is never properly deliver ingame so, all that connects Ravus to it, isnt either...really hopping for a better development for Ravus with new scenes, he deserves it
I'm still playing through the game for the first time and his change of heart had me immediately. Like... listen, I haven't seen Kingslaive. I haven't watched all of Brotherhood. I just played this game and when he tried to give Noctis the sword I'd already forgiven him. I'm a simple woman: I see a character changing their ways, I forgive them. What really made me feel a lot for him was his encouragement of support of Luna despite it being against everything he wanted, and of course the way he had to go. It was such a sad boss battle...
great video, loved the fact that he does have a depth to him and I did not connect the empire destroying his home to his disobedience I just figured they wanted to destroy everything. I'd love Ardyn, Ignis, and maybe even Arianna
Ravus is getting more focus when they restructure the game, SE gave a press release about it. Do you know what this means? A VIDEO GAME COMPANY LISTENED! AND WE'RE STILL FUCKING COMPLAINING LIKE ENTITLED CHILDREN.
Well, we are complaining about a product we bought. Paid money for. So yes, we have the right to complain when something about the bought product is severly wrong. Also, Squenix does listen, yes. They also listened when people complained about the hallway that was FFXIII, and what was the only thing that came to their mind? Open world. SE clearly lacks imagination and seems only to follow trends and demographics. They do not do their own thing anymore, they simply try to adjust to numbers. But they are doing so for years now, best evidence being Basch getting replaced with Vaan as a protagonist in FFXII.
MoreImbaThanYou You don't have the complete product you paid for. I know patience is hard for people in this community, but you'll need it. So SE took Final Fantasy in a direction it has never gone before, and your reaction is to say that it lacks imagination? Yeah, that makes total sense. You're just another old FF drone blinded by nostalgia.
Brian MacLeod Actually, I demand a complete product when I buy it. Otherwise I want it to be labeled as incomplete. It's pretty easy. You are quick to call me names, yet you have nothing to hold against my claims. Open world is nothing new, Square Enix simply decided to go with it since it's a popular thing right now. It's not nostalgia blinding me, it's being and adult that opened my eyes, preventing me from swallowing anything the market throws at me. FFXV released as an unfinished product, easy as that. More and more information are reaching the surface, completing the picture of a terribly disorganized development process that had to include stuff in the game simply because "it was shown in the trailers". Thats what you call imagination?
MoreImbaThanYou Man, you're stupid. I was referring to the implementation of open world in FFXV being a new thing for the series. You're not even worth my time. Bye.
Brian MacLeod The same as me, yet I explained why that lacked imagination. While you, again, simply call me names and bring nothing else to the table. But I gladly accept your retreat from this conversation, it's probably better that making yourself any more uneducated :)
Actually, Ignis would be good to cover next. I completely got Gladio's and Prompto's connection to Noct, but Ignis was vague for me. I'm sure it's explained in the game and I just missed it :/
I really wish Ravus was as fleshed out as you do, it's a shame that Ravus doesn't have a real fight with Noctis and that a rivalry never happened. There was so much tension from Kingsglaive and the scene at the base, and even in the few scenes with Luna. It just falls flat. Any predictions for when the new cutscenes will come out?
Im not sure if Noct has depth, at least not yet, but he is not such a simple character. He does show a potential human side of himself, its a good side of him that seems to come through, that's for sure.
The Ring will take what's most important to you if you're not from the royal (Lucis Caelum) bloodline. It took Ravus's sword arm and it took Ignis's eyesight.
At the end of his boss fight, Gladio says how he was an honorable man who didn't deserve such a tragic end (though wondering what the hell does Gladio know about him?). So it seems perhaps that Noctis is a foil to Ravus, but Ravus is in a struggle between choosing to take revenge on the Lucis bloodline and take the title of king, and keeping his sister happy and safe, without having her happiness involving Noctis ( super aggressive brother in law much?).
I think Ravus harbored hatred for the Lucis family way before his mothers death, probably because of the prophecy which seems that everyone in their family knew. I think his motivation was not revenge on Lucis's but to have Luna live making so that from the very beginning Ravus was always on Luna's side and at the final moment where she's inevitably going to die, he has no choice but to support his sisters decision.
Ravus was a perfect Seifer to Noctis's Squall. We should have battled against him like 2 or 3 times, that final time you "kill him" and later appears as a demon form in Chapter 13. If somehow this fits with the story, it would have been so much better.
Ravus was suppose to be the Sephiroth of Final Fantasy XV. Look at his character design, look at his strength, look at the demonic second form that he had.
They need to redo this whole story mode with this new story patch. Like we need more boss battles against Ravus and so many other things. We need these characters to be developed and story needs to be fleshed out. People paid $60 for this game to enjoy a great story mode, not a trash one.
I can kinda get why Ravus would despise Regis as he did. In Kingsglaive when Regis is far weaker than he was 12 years before, he summons shields that are nearly indestructible that can span an entire largeish room. But he didn't even attempt such a thing the years before when he was far stronger. I can understand that Noctis is the hope of the world and his son, but the only reason Niflheim attacked Tenebrae at that point in time was because the royal family had opened their arms to help heal Noctis. Niflheim would no doubt have attacked Tenebrae at some other point anyway, but it was in a sense Regis's fault then. At least that's how a 16-year-old boy who lost his mother, country, and status all on the same day could feel about it. So what I'm rambling about for no one to see is: Yes, it was dumb to hold a grudge for so long and let said grudge affect almost all the decisions in his life from that point on, but does it seem far fetched for it to have happened? In my opinion, no.
This game underwent development hell. Between switching directors, switching entire GAMES, having to move from PS3 to PS4, having to create a massive game with super deep characters while on SUPER crunch time, and also what was most likely a lot of stress from disagreements behind the scenes, this game was given a losing hand of cards and still played it the best it could. While in total it was ten years, realistically it was more like 5 due to having to start all over again halfway through the development.
it's very difficult for me to assess Ravus. the lack of scenes doesn't help and the chronology of his flashback is unclear. in the movie he doesn't care about his sister, in the game he does. another thing, in the movie it is mentioned nowhere that lunafreya is an oracle.
It really annoys me that Kingsglaive is mandatory to understand the story of the game, yet the movie doesn't line up very well with the game. If Square was so intent on forcing players to watch the movie, they should have at least built up Noctis much more than they did. And I do agree with the video. However, Ravus is just another victim of FFXV's greatest flaw: it's rushed, seemingly unfinished story. There is a good story there, it just that there isn't enough. So many characters weren't given enough screen time as they deserved leaving the player feeling like there should be more. It will probably always piss me off that Luna was given so little screen time, yet she is probably the biggest motivator for Noctis (I feel like he was more invested in saving her than accepting his destiny, until the last act)
fuck subtlety, ravus needed more screen time. Also, the nilfheim admins in the throne empire throne room near the beginning of the game would've been way more hype to fight against than daemons.
I disliked Ravus at the beginning. Then I went to Altissia and start liking him until I played episode Prompto and found out he is the one who suggested to attack insomnia. And now I have a complicated hate/love feeling for him.
In the game I kept thinking Ravus looked like Seymour from FFX with better hair the whole time -_- but yea I got the feeling that ravus and luna were glorified prisoners of the nifs just for keeping up appearances...
i personally think that ravus was pretending to be on the empire's side all this while, that he was working the empire from the inside and his goal was to save his sister from her inevitable death (i see him as a caius figure idk). he disliked noct because lets be real he was pretty lazy and probably not very kingly before and he didn't see him as worthy of her sacrifice. he did it all for his sister. i refuse to believe that my favourite character could be stupid enough to work with his mother's killers without a deeper purpose. i also agree that he was the most disappointing character for me, which is confusing ik RAVUS MAKES ME FEEL THINGS
Why Nilfheim wanted to kill Luna? And why they say that in front of her brother? How can Nilfheim give power to the brother of someone they are trying to kill?
Luna was creating a covenant with the Gods to help Nocts, Nilfhiem was killing the Gods for their own power in securing that they could rule all lands, thus killing Luna since she is of the Oracle bloodline was necessary in their cause. Ravus probably made a deal with the Empire saying that he would help in the cause that Nilfhiem was conducting, thus gaining power, but noted during the game it was stated that he wasn't very liked within the ranks, plus I do believe that Ravus was working undercover for the sake of his sister to bid her time.
Pøëtīc Mö this makes more sense, I couldn't imagine why on earth he would work or pledge his alliance to a nation responsible for his imprisonment and death of his mother. Still with the power gained I don't understand why he didn't rebel against the Empire and seek revenge for all the bullshit
The thing is not what Ravus is supposed to be storywhise. I mean, yes, there are hints that ad up to a bigger picture, but this also applies to Ardyn. Also, this isn't Dark Souls. Theres has to be a coherent approach on how to tell the story. Of course, we all know that the poor execution is to blame on the disorganized development of the game, leaving not a lot of time to flesh certain things out. (Just some notes next to Ravus' body, explaining some stuff? That is probably the worst kind of storytelling in a story driven game.) We know how great Ravus COULD have been. It's the poor execution that makes me (and I dare to say al lot of others) rather mad. At least Squenix partially admitted they fucked up, instead of saying "We wanted it to be a puzzle to be solved by the players!", like if they did it on purpose. I kinda buy that for the ending, but not for Ravus.
The more I assess my time with 15 the more of a mess it seems :( the game is a mess story wise. I also don't agree with people saying you have to loose story with open world.
it's not that Ravus is not an interesting character, it's just that he is very interesting but I wish the developers would have spent more time doing these: - Building him up as a super strong boss through him beating the fuck out of the party in 2 or 3 boss fights - Ardyn manipulating him, almost posing as his valet, whispering in his ear that he has to get what was stolen from him back and blablabla the way he was with the emperor in kingslaive - Slowly have him change behaviour through encounters, starting to admit to himself noctis is the chosen one - Find him dead, get the sword back and ONLY then learn that Ravus was going to give it back and was not the bad guy but only a victim of the situation That's my problem with ff15, it shows stuff that has tremendous potential but NOTHING is developped.
reut rozen they gave all the exposition we needed to know about Ardyn, from lore books, paintings, and hell even to him telling us himself. a character doesn't need a flashback sequence for him to be considered "developed"
there is one question that still bothers me about luna ad if someone can answer this question i would gladly appreciate it. luna's goal was to give the ring of lucii to noctis so why didnt she just give it to umbra since they were basically exchanging each other a notebook?
Marc Galvan A better question was why didn't Regis just give the ring to Noctis when he said goodbye since he knew that an attack was coming THAT SAME DAY.
Well done, I actually believe you in how deep a character he is. Still has a terrible design and one God ugly coat (too messy and overdesigned) though. Kind of glad they didnt push him as a rival, his design seems made to just be "what's the opposite of Noct?" Sure Ardyn just SCREAMS "I'm the Kefkaroth of the game", but less on the nose than a guy who might as well just be an inverse of our hero's design. He is the embodiment of what people say when they describe FF characters as overdesigned anime pretty boys with weird outfits wielding swords. Usually that is the protag but Noct is at least dressed normal...for a 14 year old goth/emo kid and not a 20 year old man. I'll take victories where I can get them, I guess.
Ravus should be more involved man.......He is cool, he is awesome but he cannot end up like this. I can say that Ravus easily become the final boss of the game.
eh, Idk I feel like he was a bit of a broken character or last minute decision to be an enemy bu5 quickly scrapped. It doesn't make sense that his hatred is towards someone unless he had prior motive to hate them. For Pete's sake how do you serve someone that basically killed your mother if that's the entire driven reason to hate someone lol. It's dumb. Square seriously chopped and hacked the story all around here. Ravis or whatever would have a better character development by being brainwashed and having the entire kingslave scene canned
I disagree, what you are saying it's what they wanted to do with him. Not what they give us, Ravus it's a terribly mismanage character, which makes him sadly not well develop on the game. Sorry, what they wanted and what they give us are 2 different things... And what they wanted it's more of what you are saying.
oh right, that went over my head. And yes, I agree. It is a huge shame that they cucked up the game's story. If they hadnt, it may have been my favourite FF.
I like how you try to search the depth of the character, but i hate it when the game itself doesn't actually make me care, so i have to watch people like you on youtube trying to analize the depth of the charater. It's like you're trying to do what the game should have done which shows how underdeveloped it was. I can say the exact same thing for Luna who is supposed to be more important than Ravus, yet still nobody cared even when she died. But let's stick to Ravus. No matter how many things you say about him...i can't really care because the game didn't make me to. In addition, i can understand his grudge against Regis but i can't stop thinking that siding with the imperials is plain stupid. Why join those who killed your parents? He totally knows it was the imperials. He actually sided with the murderers of his family just to satisfy his need for revenge against Regis? I'd get it if tried to take his sister and run from the imperials, and then find a way to take them down along with his so hated Regis. He appears as if he only cares about Regis, and he is totally cool with the imperials killing his family. Many times have i thought that the game was more of a camping gear advertisement, poping the the freaking Coleman logo in my face all the time, than actually being a game where important things are explained and all characters are developed.
FF15 Advice. Play the game and all side quests for as long as possible before going to find Luna. I'm thankful I did just that. First half of FF15 = 10/10 - it's amazing!!!! Second half of FF15 = 2/10 - it's absolutely crap!!!
Ravus was the character that needed more screen time. After getting the full picture, he came out as an awesome character. It's just sad that you need to read between the lines to get that story.
The entire empire got screwed. Emperor murdered off screen, head scientist guy got one line.
the emperor wasn't murdered, he was turned into a daemon
Tom
Same thing and once again too bad we didn't see it, or at least talk to the dude at least once.
Ravus Timeline in FFXV
1 In KINGSGLAIVE, tried the ring, burnt his arm. Then picked up Regis’s sword, rendezvous with the Imperial Army.
2 Returned to Gralea, got a prothetic arm, plus Magitek modification (hence the heterochromia)
3 Became the Supreme Commander, met with colleagues in front of the Emperor
4 Lead the army to takeover Lucis.
Ravus lost his only chance to give the Sword to Noctis.(revealed by letters besides his dead body in Ch.13)
6 Went to Altissia with Ardyn.
Even though Ravus wasn't in FFXV for most of the game but he has to be one of my favorite characters in the game.
Ann Strife him, Ardyn and the chocobros are my favorites. I like to think of him as the "itachi" of final fantasy 15 xD
Ann Strife my favourite character is Umbra, every time he appears puts the biggest smile on my face, weird as it sounds, defo the chocobos and then Prompto. 😉
Steve Redfield I couldn't agree more :) The last time I smiled because of a cute dog was when I saw Zwei in RWBY :)
Ann Strife I got the limited edition soundtrack yesterday. it has video montages to each tune on bluray. lost love is basically an umbrafest! I almost can't handle watching it all the way through. I want to squeeze him. but storywise I'm so sad for him, he's all alone 😞
Steve Redfield I understand :) but think if it this way, Umbra has us. All we have to do is love him and he won't be alone.
Now breakdown the character of Ardyn's Fedora
The things that fedora must have seen.
Lauren Carroll That fedora has seen its parents having sex ;D
The Fedora is clearly the actual protagonist of the game
I would love if you did a video about Arenea .. she's such a badass character but we only get little hints about who she is and where she came from.
just play FF9 and follow Beatrix story to get a properly developped version of that character.
Think of Ravus as Pizza.
It's like, they delivered the pizza that I wanted but it was cold. It's still good but like-c'mon man...my pizza's cold
"So much potential" seems to be a reoccuring theme with FFXV. The Starscourge, Prompte as an MT and so many unexplored characters. These are all extremly interesting yet not explored at all.
prompto being a MT = episode prompto
It hurt me when they made him a demon and he says "End it..."
It's fucking horrible
It would've been cool if there was a rivalry between Ravus and Noctis like there was between squall and seifer in FF8. The battles that could've taken place in 15 would've gave Ravus more screen time and development
Mahogany Black As far as I know they became really good friends when Noctis went to Tenebrae and almost became best friends
He is more fleshed out in Episode Ignis. He is amazing there, actually.
great analysis! honestly, pretty much most of the story went over my head, so it was nice to have it laid out for me.
My opinion about Ravus: Waifu.
Ravus was probably one of the best characters in FF15. Very interesting.
I was expecting to fight him but not in demon from
Nice, someone should make a video of all of Ravus's scenes in actual chronological order, the game just puts them all in the wrong order which makes it confusing as to who's side he's on, and makes his change of heart seem way more sudden and tacked on than it actually is.
He looked like Jaime Lannister in the movie.
poor luna
And Luna was voiced by Lena Headey (Cercei Lannister)...
I like to describe his visual change 'from Lannister to Targaryen'
We just have to wait and see how Tabata will handle the cutscenes. I'm still stoked though.
I was expecting this to come out after the cutscene patch.
You explained Ravus MUCH MORE better than they did in the game! -_-d
Nice video! :)
It was interesting to hear your thoughts on this character bc many people didn't understand his motives.
I so agree, Ravus is a standout character with satisfying development
sunheart123 Dude needed more screen time tho
Plus he sucked his pride and helped ignis when the empire attacks Leviathan in episode ignis. He’s so shock when he finds out what happened to Luna.
I cried so much
Yes please do Igns. I actually agree with this video. I liked him towards the end when he was in those scenes with Luna and really was looking forward to how he and Noctis could talk things out but sadly that wasn't to be.
Can you do a video on how the main characters tie in with the anime/movie? I feel like it's interesting and brotherhood left me kind of confused 😅
Yay, I liked Ravus ever since Episode Ignis. So I'm glad you did this.
But something you missed the whole ring of power thing from lord of the rings. The ring, the ring bearer, are entwined just by contact. The problem here is not the game as such, as much as it was Kingsglaive;
Although in the film, you see clearly and repeatedly the effect the ring has on wearers, but you don't see that the weight of the rings power immediately starts to affect Luna.
I love Ravus. I was really hoping for an Episode Ravus. 😢
I would love to see this updated because of all the stuff that happened in episode Ignis/episode Ravus~
great video, loved the fact that he does have a depth to him and I did not connect the empire destroying his home to his disobedience I just figured they wanted to destroy everything. I'd love Ardyn, Ignis, and maybe even Arianna
I love Ravus. He and Iggy are my top faves
Brian MacLeod
Actually, I demand a complete product when I buy it.
Bye.
Brian MacLeod
The same as me, yet I explained why that lacked imagination.
So it seems perhaps that Noctis is a foil to Ravus, but Ravus is in a struggle between choosing to take revenge on the Lucis bloodline and take the title of king, and keeping his sister happy and safe, without having her happiness involving Noctis ( super aggressive brother in law much?).
great video, keep up the great work
Get well soon man!
There was so much potential for Ravus, Aranea, Cor, and so many other characters.
I'd love to play as ravus. like playing from when he hates noctus to when he changes his mind and dies
Hi Daryl, can you please do one,for Ignis? Thanks
It's a really nice character
Next video about Aranea maybe?
Ravus was a perfect Seifer to Noctis's Squall. We should have battled against him like 2 or 3 times, that final time you "kill him" and later appears as a demon form in Chapter 13. If somehow this fits with the story, it would have been so much better.
Ravus was suppose to be the Sephiroth of Final Fantasy XV. Look at his character design, look at his strength, look at the demonic second form that he had.
Do both Ignis and Gladio please.
watch FFXV: Brotherhood
Mohd Benyamin I have. But I like how he does an extended analysis so I wanna here his takes
They need to redo this whole story mode with this new story patch. Like we need more boss battles against Ravus and so many other things. We need these characters to be developed and story needs to be fleshed out. People paid $60 for this game to enjoy a great story mode, not a trash one.
Kaizen カイゼン True
Let's start a petition for the story mode guys
Only square Enix can spend ten years on a game and still release it. Unfinished
James Sengoku If they didn't release it when they did, it would have been scrapped, again. So better than nothing?
This game underwent development hell. Between switching directors, switching entire GAMES, having to move from PS3 to PS4, having to create a massive game with super deep characters while on SUPER crunch time, and also what was most likely a lot of stress from disagreements behind the scenes, this game was given a losing hand of cards and still played it the best it could. While in total it was ten years, realistically it was more like 5 due to having to start all over again halfway through the development.
So many fucking times I forgot he was in the game good job square
why was he killed off screen???
Because they rushed development of the game so they could get it out for Christmas instead of waiting to complete it.
So he could be re-killed as a daemon & to give us another reason to look forward to the Ardyn fight.
The God VEGITO!!!?!! In fact EVERY single one in the game (except luna) is killed off screen
because he will have his own DLC that people will pay for, of course.
How was Luna killing herself? Still don't understand
it's very difficult for me to assess Ravus. the lack of scenes doesn't help and the chronology of his flashback is unclear. in the movie he doesn't care about his sister, in the game he does. another thing, in the movie it is mentioned nowhere that lunafreya is an oracle.
Honestly, it bothered me more they couldn't unify the designs of Ravus, Iedolas, and Lunafreya between Kingsglaive and FFXV.
I always thought the reason for Ravus hate for Regis is a combination of resentment for failing to save his mother and brainwashing by the empire.
i personally think that ravus was pretending to be on the empire's side all this while, that he was working the empire from the inside and his goal was to save his sister from her inevitable death (i see him as a caius figure idk). he disliked noct because lets be real he was pretty lazy and probably not very kingly before and he didn't see him as worthy of her sacrifice. he did it all for his sister. i refuse to believe that my favourite character could be stupid enough to work with his mother's killers without a deeper purpose. i also agree that he was the most disappointing character for me, which is confusing ik RAVUS MAKES ME FEEL THINGS
This game as a whole had so much potential, but the story was not well directed and missed so much scenes
Yeahh do Ignis please!!
Still with the power gained I don't understand why he didn't rebel against the Empire and seek revenge for all the bullshit
if you include kingsglaive, then yes he is a deep character
And if all the planets are aligned, then maybe... nah, he's still shruggable.
I'm a complicated fella.
That is probably the worst kind of storytelling in a story driven game.)
We know how great Ravus COULD have been.
Ravus might be "fleshed out" but it would help beleiving this if the story was told better. I love the story for this game but its told horribly
it's not that Ravus is not an interesting character, it's just that he is very interesting but I wish the developers would have spent more time doing these:
- Building him up as a super strong boss through him beating the fuck out of the party in 2 or 3 boss fights
- Ardyn manipulating him, almost posing as his valet, whispering in his ear that he has to get what was stolen from him back and blablabla the way he was with the emperor in kingslaive
- Slowly have him change behaviour through encounters, starting to admit to himself noctis is the chosen one
- Find him dead, get the sword back and ONLY then learn that Ravus was going to give it back and was not the bad guy but only a victim of the situation
That's my problem with ff15, it shows stuff that has tremendous potential but NOTHING is developped.
Defeating the empire and Ravus would have been a better story than the FF15 story where you fight the jester.
I like ravus left hand remind of tidus
Now do Ardyn and Noct
Armorwing01 there stories are pretty clear cut in my eyes. Seeing as how they were 2 of the main focuses of the game.
they barely touched on Ardyn's story tbh
reut rozen they gave all the exposition we needed to know about Ardyn, from lore books, paintings, and hell even to him telling us himself. a character doesn't need a flashback sequence for him to be considered "developed"
Address *cough* Luna *cough*
ooooooooooooo so you want the rest of the story? wait for it in the Episode Ravus Dlc
As much as I loved Final Fantasy XV, two words can sum up the game: Missed Opportunities.
7:19 Yuna's fate?! Omg! Thanks for that Final Fantasy 10 spoiler
i only have one word for Ravus. "WHO?"
lol same. I just finished the game and this insignificant character did not leave an impression on me whatsoever.
Not as bad as Jared, still don't know why I was supposed to care he died.
there is one question that still bothers me about luna ad if someone can answer this question i would gladly appreciate it.
luna's goal was to give the ring of lucii to noctis so why didnt she just give it to umbra since they were basically exchanging each other a notebook?
Marc Galvan the ring cannot be just "delivered" it has to be passed on by the Oracle herself as pointed by Ravis
Marc Galvan
A better question was why didn't Regis just give the ring to Noctis when he said goodbye since he knew that an attack was coming THAT SAME DAY.
However, Ravus' action make no sense and so does his motives. Even Tabata admits it and has planned to fix his character in upcoming patches
Ravus and Ignis would have made a nice couple. Their couple name could be Igniravus 😆
Ravus should be more involved man.......He is cool, he is awesome but he cannot end up like this. I can say that Ravus easily become the final boss of the game.
*should easily
eh, Idk I feel like he was a bit of a broken character or last minute decision to be an enemy bu5 quickly scrapped.
You only need to play ffx once to know yuna was going to sacrifice herself
yes but you easily miss details that hit towards it. that's what his point was
Joshua Brunton Odins point was that a good game should only convey its message without multiple playthroughs.
oh right, that went over my head. And yes, I agree. It is a huge shame that they cucked up the game's story. If they hadnt, it may have been my favourite FF.
I think the creators made Ravus only to save the tradition of pretty white haired guys in FF Universe ;-)
