Thanks for the excellent video on the Drone Beacon module. Received my module and reconfigured it per your video. The reconfig went just as described and the location is not visible using the OpenDroneID app. I'll feel a lot safer knowing my location isn't visible while complying with RID.
You forgot to mention that the best way to attach the RID module is with at least seven layers of aluminum body-tape, making sure to smooth it down so there are no gaps around the module. 😛
Just got my 107. I've been wanting to press my old Phantom 3 into professional service, knew I needed RemoteID, but was concerned about non-law enforcement having access to pilot location data. Your RemoteID module, and the configuration settings gives me all the confidence I need to move forward. Will be ordering the RID unit after I click comment. Thanks,
Got my Drone Beacon module, (using your discount code), flashed the firmware, and did the configuration. All very simple and straightforward. Thanks for a very helpful video.
That is great. What would be greater is if the manufacturers would allow that alteration on onboard RID, or perhaps make that the default setting when shipped. Love your videos, your content is always informative and concise.
Finally a workable solution. I was so concerned about thieves and bad people knowing my location that I was willing to go rogue and completely dark or drop the hobby altogether. My safety comes first.
I plan to use this on my phantom 4 pro if they don’t fix it with firmware (maybe even turn it off I’d they do). I’ll probably still go with my “if Karen can find me” plan as well though. Police body cam, high vis vest with “FAA certified remote pilot, do not disturb”, and my usual openly carried full sized side arm. Maybe even pepper spray
Everyone will do this!!!!!!! Keep making videos so we can do exactly what you're doing. We need you and we need your help to do this. We don't want people spying on us.
@thegunsngloryshow Understandable, and if that information were available to law enforcement or FAA to confirm what/who is doing what would be fine. As a side note, rest assured, the wide angle lenses can not see much detail at all at any height, much, MUCH less than people think. That being said, allowing the general public to find the real time location of the the pilot, and enabling a confrontation, many times heated, and sometimes even with weapons, is unacceptable. This is a recipe for disaster, and someone will get hurt or killed for doing something innocent and legal.
@thegunsngloryshow Indeed, remote ID as it is now is problematic honestly unsafe, hence my attempt to level the field, at least a little, by working with Bluemark. To your question, "... I own 38 acres...", the answer is that the _property_ ownership is irrelevant to the FAA, as FAA has jurisdiction of ALL _airspace_ both controlled and uncontrolled. So if it's in the airspace it's controlled by the FAA, and if it is in FAA jurisdiction all the rules apply for operating in that airspace. This is what allows any airplane, helicopter and hot air balloon to operate over your property with impunity. If your flight is indoors, then the FAA has no say. I know some will say "how will the FAA know" if I'm over my own property, and this is a fair point, but if a medical helicopter has to divert or if the drone flies away into the path of an airplane for instance, that's when any violations will all pile on, IMHO.
Great info! My only problem with remote id was Karen and Ken having the ability to see my location. They have no legitimate reason to be given this information. For the self appointed members of the drone police, it's an open invitation you harass law abiding drone pilots. Thanks for informing the community about this product!!
Perfect,,a cheaper solution for a problem I've heard about...what if I told you I've heard people say they were going to flood the airwaves with signals from modules in cars while on the freeway...leaving them on permanently in spots....while camping in the forest or fishing the local lakes and rivers.....everywhere they are not flying drones.....🥴
I'd say let them do it, this wont get policed anyway, it's merely going to be used retrospectively to pin a crime on a pilot that happened to be in that location
I suppose they're going to spend the rest of their sorry lives running around, keeping that "flood" of batteries charged? Not to mention all their non-existent money they'll be spending on the RIDs in the first place!
Thank you for that information, That is the way it should be, I usually fly my drone in a relatively quite area, I don't mind law enforcement knowing where I am or what Ii am doing I have nothing to hide, but I feel unsafe knowing anyone can find me weather the have good or bad intentions Thhank you Bluemark.
Thanks for sharing! I completely agree and BlueMark was great in working with us to get this set up. I hope the rest of the industry takes note and trends in this direction!
@@andrewdrone since clearly the FAA doesn’t care about that, based on what the FAA rep has said during interviews you know what you need to do or rather in this case NOT DO…
I will take it a step further as I HATE that bs argument people use, "well if you have nothing to hide then you should be ok with cops knowing where you are or what you are doing" This is total bunk. Its just a nonsense argument used to infringe on people and overstep authority they shouldnt or dont have.
Thanks again, Keith. I received my module a couple of months ago, but finally got around to setting it up, reconfiguring it and updating my FAA registration. Followed your video step, by step....helped me alot! Much appreciated.
I have a 107 and do gig work with my mini3 , and gopro equipped cinewhoop. I plan on being mostly in compliance with everything used for work related flights. However I won't stop flying my 20 gram whoops because I didn't put a I'd on them. They really need to make some changes. I would go broke if I put one on all my quads, and planes
Indeed, this is not a well liked rule, and for good reason. Some will comply, but IMO there will be mass non-compliance for sure. It will be the equivalent of driving 5 mph over the speed limit, technically not legal, but nobody cares except for that one old lady wagging her finger at you as you drive by... Just sayin' 😎
Outstanding video.....as always!! Thank you so much for all you do and for all the vital information you share. This is the first comment I have ever placed on ANY website. I realize that my comments herein are obvious and inconsequential and repetitive of most other commenters. However, I felt the need to write this just to ensure that you realize how much your efforts are appreciated by countless silent but enlightened viewers like myself.
Excellent video. I have a DB-120 on order. I assume what you select WLAN BEACON under the RADIO tab, you're turning off is the data transmission that a standard cell phone App can copy and display. You mention Law Enforcement and the FAA have different detection equipment that can still monitor this RF ID Device with the parameters you mentioned being turned off. Just curious, when selecting WLAN BEACON mode, what RF ID signals can the authorities still monitor on the DB-120? In other words, how did you determine that by selecting WLAN BEACON, the DB-120 remains legal to use in the US?
Thanks! The WiFi is not turned off, just the way it responds to requests. Professional scanners have more robust signal scanning and don't need the specific signals that are needed by consumer cell phones. According to the manufacturer of the device, if configured as noted it is a compliant broadcast according to the rule as it still meets the approved FAA DOC as submitted.
I really appreciate that this beacon is now safe to use for our safety from fly haters who take us the wrong way and want to fight or shoot down my drone. It’s good that only faa or law enforcement can see. Thanks
Remote ID and having the government in my pants… Me no like! The fact that you can keep the average Joe or Karen in this case LOL from seeing your position big thumbs up. Thanks for all your information for not only keeping us out of legal trouble, but keeping us safe.
Hello Keith, thank you for this excellent update on these RID modules. I was looking into them when your video popped up on my notifications; perfect timing. I especially like the firmware changes to keep the pilot's location hidden from those without reason to know where we are. I jumped to the US Links to purchase the modules for my older but beneficial drones. Thank You!
U know what's crazy is u actually need a amature radio license to broadcast these so it's so messed up I just don't give a fck. Nobody is gonna find me anyways if I don't want to be found. I got a sunroof and tinted windows.
Well done review of the module. Overview of RID , and demonstration of the "hack". Good information. Karen/Ken's don't need to know where I am. Law enforcement, sure. My issue with this module, way too expensive. On the plus side, I can easily transfer it between my builds. Yes, I build my fpv quads. And I beat the snot out of them. Is that thing durable? And it's too big for my 3.5" builds. Thank you for sharing, hopefully as we get closer to September we'll have more options. Happy flying everyone. 🤓
As far as modules, I think this is good that at least one is looking to address one of the biggest problems with Remote ID. Cost is still a bit much, but for a hobbyist, buying only one that could be moved helps. It does look a bit big though, and durability is definitely going to be a problem with these things. For those wanting to comply, this looks to be a better option than the others I have seen thus far. Maybe the FAA should give vouchers for the cost difference from what they promised to what we actually have? LOL yeah, that'll never happen
Karen will simply report that she has a drone in sight and she can't see it with her app to the cop and he/she will be on you faster than a speeding busybody.
All drones do not need to broadcast Remote ID and are still perfectly legal. So Karen will report a potentially legal activity, then will end up crying in her safe space with her therapy dog... 😅
Cop: "How is it harassing you?" Karen: "It's... flying... way up hundreds of feet and I can still see it!" Cop: "Mmmm-kay, we'll go 'check it out" Also Cop: Goes to buy a donut.
Indeed it makes sense, I agree. If you're handy and want to stick the PCB on/in the drone and power it with the drone it's down to $119, which is better than the $300 that we started with, but of course still might be inhibitive for some and they'll probably just not comply...
This is great news! Something I'll definitely look into after seeing how this plays out with people getting accosted for Karens calling drones in as "not complying" because they can't see the drone on the app and LEOs then accosting a pilot if thsy don't believe they are complying. I've had similar experiences in the automotive field skirting laws, completely on the legal side, but having overzealous police automatically assume and ticket me as if I were in the wrong. Wasting my time, their time, and tax payer money.
Thanks! They can always come to the channel, happy to educate if they need to know how the rules and the technology to make it work! Thinking most LEOs have better things to do... 😎
I did just purchase the RID for my MavicAir2 using your promo code (Thanks for the buck $1) Your video is clear and was helpful for this purchase. I’ll return to refresh my memory about the ROM update steps and HACK once the RID arrives.
Thanks for the feedback! I wish the discount was better for you, and directly from the original manufacturer (BlueMark) we did get a much better discount, but from the local supplier in the US it is a bit stingy. They did save us shipping from the Netherlands and reasonable shipping so not all bad I guess... 😎
Very interesting but perhaps a bit complicated for us non-super techy folks. Hopefully, we can have all this in order by September. Surely, I hate having to deal with remote ID. However, I now have several sub 250g drones but as soon as you add an extended battery or even a 3-mile compliant light on top of it, you now are over 250g! Sucks! So oh well. Also have a Mavic Air 2 that I am considering selling but not sure just yet. Thanks for the great info for us to learn.
I also have a ma2 although I fly it much less now after having been on the business end of a 12 gauge because a gun nut freak show was paranoid I was spying on him while I was inspecting MY chimney. After my 3 batteries die I will scrap the drone most likely. It’s not safe to fly drones here in Murica…
@@0utcast I hope you called the cops and had the idiot jailed. I'm all for firearms freedoms but thats being unreasonable and shouldnt be tolerated period.
Hi Allen I just got my first Drone (DJI mini2se) for fathers day. Son got this for me so we can have some fun just flying in the park. I have been watching You Tube info. about these rules, license & certificate I was made to get the Trust by the son. Now I need to buy this so people & cops who hate drones can come and give a big fine or steal it? This is also for RC airplanes, this is going to be pricey just to have fun. Great video!
Glad it is helpful, and thanks for taking the time to comment! If you are flying only for fun, the Mini2 SE is below the weight limit which requires registration so you don't need to add any modules, and it is not transmitting on it's own, so you're good! Correct, this is for RC planes also, but only those that are above 249g OR flown for commercial (part 107) purposes... 👍
I do a lot of IOT device programming and I can say it's a lot like our vtx rules. It's perfectly fine to broadcast under low power, ike Bluetooth or network ssid, etc., on public frequencies. Signal boosters are widely available. All legal up to a certain point of power. Idk what power level that is but it would require specialized equipment requiring a license and be more expensive than most would spend the money on. What would create legal issues would be bypassing encryption or broadcasting on private frequencies. Which wouldn't apply here or every rid module would have licensing requirements and/or encryption keys. That said, it is the government. If you piss them off they will find a crime.
You have always been a voice of reason when it comes to this emotional issue and the only thing that I believe (besides cost) has been an issue is the Karen and criminal problem. This product seems to cover that 100%. Thank you for doing this great video.
I saw this comment on another channel. I wish I could take credit for it, but I cant. PLEASE READ!! It's informative, ABSOLUTELY correct, and worth the time to read. A few facts: The FAA is not an "enforcement" agency. Local Law Enforcement Officers are NOT Federal RULE enforcement agents. I am a Part 107 pilot since 2016. I've had every type of Karen and Dumb Cop interaction you can imagine. Let me explain to everyone EXACLTY what to do when a drone cop makes contact with you and starts demanding crap. (Unless you live in a stop and ID state or are operating a motor vehicle on a public road) Police cannot demand a darn thing. When cops come up to me and start talking, I make eye contact ask their name and badge number then tell them I want my lawyer present for all questions. (5th Amendment right) Then ask for a supervisor (they are required to get one when asked). After that I refuse to say a word, except to ask "Am I being detained?" and "Let me know when you are done detaining me." You are NOT required to give your Trust Card/Part 107, SSN Card, ID Card, DL, etc to any cop just because they demand it. Cop 101: In order to demand ID a cop must have Reasonable Articulable Suspicion that you are breaking a LAW!!!! Not a Federal Rule. I refuse to show them anything. (4th Amendment right) I have my drones all registered. The number is on the bottom in the same grey color as the drone so tiny its hard to read, but if holding the drone in your hand it can be clearly seen. This is done so they can't take a picture or see the number. Cops are NOT allowed to touch or seize your drone even for a second. Again, that's a 4th Amendment right violation. 100% of the time cops are called on me I leave without giving them anything, ever... period. If a cop has a Remote ID app, and sees you flying and notices your drone is not broadcasting... again, local law enforcement officers are not federal rule enforcement agents. Just ask the cop this, "what penal code violation is "not complying with remote ID"? Done. Now they can and will try to see what car you are driving to ID you that way. Being patient works. I've found that cops get bored and leave after 15-20mins of watching me to see what car I am driving. Keep in mind, I follow every single FAA rule. I even do things above and beyond what they require; marking landing sites with orange cones, having a lipo rated fire extinguisher on site at all times, etc. I will not however comply with RemoteID. That will only make the Karen situation worse. Using your own analogy; Do local cops enforce FDA rules/policies? Of course not. Just like they don't stop people using cellphones to make sure they are FCC compliant. I am not a lawyer, nor to I play one on TV. David Lane (Denver, CO) is my lawyer and we are ready for the FAA. ** the following was my reply to T** before he blocked it: @Tim McKay NOTHING to follow at all. There is ZERO connection between local law enforcement and federal rules. ZERO! The idea that local cops are going to start busting kids at parks flying toys without RemoteID is never going to happen. Just like local cops don't enforce building codes/rules. Cities are required to have and maintain an entire dept of employees to enforce building codes or even city codes (like your grass is too long). Question - how many people have been arrested by a cop for their grass being too long? Now if they FAA wants to hire rule enforcement agents.... will that ever happen? Nope. One other thing... I've been flying remote aircraft since the mid 80's. Quadcopters since 2013. This isn't "new and evolving". Its OLD and evolving. YEARS and YEARS of dji style drones everywhere. How many have killed someone? Seriously injured? How many people have been arrested by cops for flying a drone (that wasn't in a park where a city has a ordinance)?????? How many drones have crashed into manned aircraft? I know of one. It was a cop flying a drone into a police helicopter. We have this thing called history we can rely on T**. History has shown us that the FAA is a joke! Let me drop another one on ya T**. The Federal Post Office!!!! They have their own enforcement division as well. Why is that? Because local cops are not federal rule enforcement agents. Some cities have signed/voted on agreements with their post offices. This is so local cops can enter federal property and enforce LOCAL LAWS. So if I enter a post office and ship a lipo battery without marking that on the box - I just violated a federal rule. I get caught. What happens? Does the post master call local police? Of course not. Even with a signed letter of cooperation between the Federal Govt (Post Office) and local PD only allows the PD to enforce what they are mandated to enforce.... LAWS, not rules. Those agreements are for people breaking local LAWS on postal property (such as disorderly conduct). Meaning even if a city enters into an "understanding" about FAA regulations with the FAA, local cops can still only enforce LAWS. (I mention this because some cities have already tried - right Mayor of Telluride, CO?) Now if pilots choose to waive their civil rights and comply with cops out of fear... I can't help the sheep.
This video is epic for me. I have an older EXO Cinemaster 2 that works great and I just couldn't justify some of the Remote ID module prices to continue using it for anything beyond recreational use. Now that there is an option to remain compliant, but thwart the casual snooper, this option is amazing. This should be a feature of any remote ID module. With time running out, I think this is the way I will go. In the future, my drone upgrades will have it on-board, but I'm in that awkward transitional phase with an older drone that I want to keep flying Part 107.
If you're doing nothing wrong, this is unlikely. There are many drones flying that do not NEED remote ID, so not seeing a RID signal does not mean there is anything non-compliant going on, and keep in mind it IS transmitting a compliant RID signal so you would be compliant with RID. If they simply are anti-drone they would be more likely to charge a pilot with reckless flying or trespassing, which ARE under their purview, rather than RID. If they are serious about RID, they will likely have the right equipment already (LEO can't just pull out their personal cell phone and start scanning to determine compliance with anything, they'll have the right equipment) and the broadcast will show up just fine.
Good info, what Im looking for is the functionality to log the flight path on a map and altitude. I belong to a rc club and would like a reference to where our flight boundaries are from the pilots stand viewpoint. To record it and view it after flight would be ideal. Any thoughts?
Thanks for this video. I have been flying RC aircraft since the mid '70s. As much as Remote ID is a hassle I understand how and why the FAA has had to resort to this. I am thankful that the AMA has worked with the FAA and has created the FRIAs so we can continue to fly at our AMA sanctioned flying field. I will be purchasing one of these modules to have with me when I fly at a non-FRIA site.
This is such a great idea! I hope more RID Module manufacturers get on board with this....I'm trying to get the word out on this so gave you a shout-out on my channel as well for making us aware. A step in the right direction...thx!
Thank you! Absolutely agree, trying to DO SOMETHING, and BlueMark was kind enough to listen to my perspective and work to implement a version that at least moves the needle in the right direction. Hopefully we set a precedent that catches on everywhere in the industry! You Heard It Here First! lol 🤙
Hi, Thanks for your contribution to the firmware enhancements. If I deactivate the "Reply to active WLAN scanning" function, will that prevent me locating my unit with my own phone when I land off-site? If so, could the firmware be modified to allow a specific mobile phone access to the signal. That would allow the pilot access whilst excluding the "Karens".
That is correct, same process but different firmware. Note the db121pcb does have remote antenna and GPS, just lacks a battery. ua-cam.com/video/GJBNqKafe-Q/v-deo.html
How would the RID module work as a tracking device? Say I'm out on a photo shoot and lay my gear bag down, but I have a RID device in it broadcasting my location. Somebody grabs my bag, and if I'm within range can track it? It's not what the device was intended to do but would it work, why not? If I used an external power source, it would xmit forever? I'd just want to make sure that if it was in my checked airline bag, it wasn't accidentally left on. I've held off buying a RID for my Phantom 4 since it has a mechanical problem, but once I fix it, to be compliant I'll need to look into one of these gadgets. Jim
I'm in the UK and mostly fly sub 250g but I have a bunch of planes that are over limit, they are gliders and scale war birds and sticking that thing on would spoil looks and performance. No one doing anything nefarious will comply , it's just dumb. Nice to see a work around for those willing to comply though, defo makes it safer.
Both, eventually. You first need to download the firmware to your phone or a PC, whichever device you will be using to configure the module. Then when you connect to the module with that device, you can grab the firmware and load it to the module. Keep in mind unless you have an older db module the firmware is updated already so you shouldn't have to update it... Just did a new video a day ago talking about the new models they have too... ua-cam.com/video/6nrq-DlshcI/v-deo.html 🤙🤙
Thank you for this information. I have a older drone and everything you covered in this video will help me. My drone has about 20 min flight time. How much less will my flight time be you think? Or will this time vary by drone manufacturer?
Thanks! My guess is it won't effect it very much under normal circumstances. Most larger drones have power to spare so they can fight the wind so maybe just a tiny bit of time. If putting it on a mini drone I can see it knocking it down a bit more... 😎
Maybe can still use a cellphone with an external USB OTG WLAN card that supports monitor mode. Probably won't stop nearby monitoring karens using an indoor computer setup from handing out locations to others. WLAN card the has monitor mode required.
Thanks, That's Excellent! They said they would start including it in the next versions, and to be honest I heard Alien Drones sold them out! Was the new firmware configured as in this video or a different default?
What do you suggest if you have a drone flying outside of your house randomly 3 nights a week? The nearest neighbor is 1/2 mile away and its all private land.
If your question is serious my first question is what is it doing? Flying by, hovering, how far away, what time of night? There are legit reasons that they may be flying, maybe simply recreation, Amazon delivery, real estate, mapping, herd management, etc. Private land is irrelevant, the airspace is what is important which is open to all and controlled by the FAA. The pilot could also be standing on a public road that is very close, which would also be legal. Is it an FPV drone? Majority of cameras on drones are wide angle and cannot see any detail at much of a distance so initially I wouldn't be worried about that and if it is nefarious or surveilling in some way, (even tracking deer at night is not legal in some situations) there are laws against this stuff so I would certainly pursue that route with local law enforcement, but as a last resort. I'd assume it is legit first so I wouldn't get embarrassed if it is actually legitimate so I wouldn't get labeled as the paranoid guy down the street who thinks everyone is spying on me. Just because it's legal though doesn't mean it is courteous or respectful. So of course the details matter, it depends what's going on. Drones are everywhere and are nearly as normal as that irritating helicopter and ultralight that fly over my house every day and shake my windows, but I can't do anything about them. I definitely would not recommend a confrontation until you learn more. It can be dangerous, there are a LOT of nuts out there.
@@AlienDrones it is serious. You have to realize how remote this farm is. I'm on a dead end private road. 1000's of acres of private land around me. For months now, several times a week, I have seen a drone flying around in my front pasture(front yard). This happens at night, so I have been unable to get anything like a good look at it. (considering buying a starlight camera). Usually he just hovers out front. Some times he will hover by the tree line. There are no close public roads. You'd have to be standing on my property to see my house. The property is surrounded by woods. I installed drone scanner on my phone(its why I found your page), but it didn't show anything. Also considered buying my own drone to follow it back to its launch point. Local PD seems uninterested in investigating, because by the time they get there hes gone. I realize that its legal to fly where he is flying, but it seems like its stalking which is illegal.
@@dave4882 Just some things to think about, if it's hovering by a tree line, is someone looking for deer maybe? Do you have any hunters you know about that might be the culprits? Since it's night, is there at there a strobe light attached to it? Legally there needs to be if it's dark, and they are required to be within line of site too. Might make it easier to find out where it goes. My guess (and only a guess) is it is someone who doesn't even realize you know it's there and doesn't realize they are causing you anxiety. You're right though, it's tough since it's dark and you can't see where it comes from or goes to. Is the drone scanner app on an Apple device by chance? If so, try an Android phone, Apple doesn't pick up the RID signals very well. My guess is that it isn't transmitting though, many don't have to... As annoying as it is, don't shoot at it. It is a felony to do so and don't need it to become a legal problem for you because someone else is being a jerk...
@@AlienDrones deer is a possibility. There are hunters around. But theyd be poaching on my land. Not going to shoot it. Don't need that kinda problem. Android phone.
Why wouldn't you dial back the broadcast power on the RID to reduce the detection range and increase batter life? Is that part of the compliance thing?
Good question, and yes. There is a minimum transmit power, among other things, for it to be a compliant broadcast. The modules need to flash a certain code when they are operating in a compliant mode, so if you do fall outside any of the requirements it is supposed to flash a "noncompliant" code...
So to be clear all drones need to have this these type of modules? I watched a previous video of yours and was under the impression that only categories 1-4 was required to have these.
You're mixing a couple of things. First, the simplest way to explain the requirement for Remote ID is that if the drone (or yourself) is registered for any reason (required or not) then it needs remote ID. If it is registered and it doesn't have built in "standard" remote ID, then it will need a module like the one in this video (there are other models of course). Second, the category 1-4 is referring to the "flights over people rule" drone classifications, and one of the requirements for the flights over people rule requires _every_ category of drone (1-4) to have remote ID installed. Hope this helps!
@@AlienDrones So I emailed the FAA and they said that I can't switch out the modules if I retire my old drone. I'd have to just get another module for the other one.
@@RosaBevington Glad you checked, that's the right thing to do. However, I know I specifically asked this in June, 2023 and was told this directly from the FAA: " To swap a single broadcast module around would necessitate canceling the registration for drone A and creating a new one for drone B. Moving the module back to drone A or putting on drone C would require another cancelation and another new registration." Perhaps were they thinking that "retiring" the drone meant leaving it registered by chance? Sometimes the FAA can answer a question very specifically, even though that's not the question that was intended to be asked. It's hard to believe if you cancel the registration that there would be any reason that a new registration with that now unused module SN would be an issue. I can ask for a confirmation of my previous question as well, maybe something has changed since June. I'll reply here when I hear back.
I just double checked with the FAA and they confirmed to me that you can move a module from a decommissioned aircraft to a different one if you cancel the registration on the first and then re-register it on the new drone.
My DB12 is in hand and I’m trying to get things set up but want to do like you did with first seeing what it broadcasts in factory config then after reconfigure. I can’t find a single app that tracks drones without subscription, purchase, or other data collection BS. Any recommendations?
@@OpenCarryUSMC DroneScanner and OpenRemote ID are the two free apps I used and was able to see the broadcast. If you have Apple I don't think there is a free app available right now, something about Apple's configuration makes scanning difficult.
@@AlienDrones I do have apple. I bought the DB120 so I'll configure it to prevent Karens from seeing my drone. Not sure what I'll do when I get a new drone with built in RID but I've already gotten a police body cam and will carry some little printouts of Oregon state law which makes it a felony to interfere with a drone pilot.
Still flying my5 year old original Mavic Pro ...figure this will work on it and liking the fact that the "karens" wont see it. Only question I have is whether I should affix the module to the battery or towards the front of the drone itself. Curious if placement of this module could in anyway interfere with the comms between the drone and the controller. Are you aware of any testing that has been done to see if remote ID modules can interfere with drone to controller communications? Thanks for all of your great videos.
I've done some basic testing and have found no obvious degradation of the control or video transmission within VLOS. I did some distance testing of the RID modules themselves, which made me have 2 modules on the drone I was using (since the std RID is not working as advertised) ua-cam.com/video/7P1k-WlPNNs/v-deo.html and I didn't notice any issues with this either. I also put a module on the original mavic pro here: ua-cam.com/video/tug7EOdp1No/v-deo.html and didn't have an issue, even though I put it over the front, not the battery. Best thing I can suggest is to place it over the battery (just have to have velcro on all the batteries then, which is why I didn't in my test ) so you can to keep it out of the way of the GPS electronics and you will probably be just fine. Hope this helps! 🤙
Thank You. Your work with DroneBeacon firmware was right on the money. Followed your instructions and the db120 is not visible to the civilian tracking apps. Again, Thank You!
Thanks for this info! Wondering if any of the other RID's have this same configuration possibility? Didn't like the size and looks of this one, and the gray Potensic looks better on my FIMI S8 SE 2020 but don't know if there is a work around like the Blue Mark's.
Thanks! Nope, this is unique to the BlueMark. They are the only ones willing to go through the substantial extra work qualifying this version. Indeed I don't care for the form factor either, but...
Great idea for the module as well as information. Since you're working with the manufacturer, I would encourage you to have them design a more aerodynamic form. That module you displayed screams "maximum air resistance." How long does that battery last in the module? I have 4 batteries for my drone which typically lasts about 45 minutes total. Need to make sure the module lasts longer than the drone batteries. Thanks again for the video.
Lot easier to make a small case in the form of a faraday cage. Remote ID final ruling states the module has to TRANSMIT the data, there is zero requirement for it to be capable of being received X distance from the UAS.
Hello, I'm from Brazil and here we have a lot of problems with crime and lately the authorities are making drone seizures; Is this device compatible with the Fimi brand, model X8 Pro? I await your reply; Thanks!
Is it correct to assume that after we get and reconfigure our new Db120 module that we also need to go back to the FAA site and update our Registration information if we have previously registered as recreational flyer? Also as we are registered can we fly the sub 250gr drone with the extra module weight? thanks for the help. glen
Thanks for the good question! First, if you are registered already, regardless of the weight of the drone, adding the weight of a module will make no difference to you as far as registration, since you already did it. The difference would be if you are flying only recreationally, your drone is 250g and you are REQUIRED to register. If you are adding the module after you are already registered, you may be able to simply add the remote ID serial number to the existing registration, but the ability to update this becomes locked after some period of time (FAA website thing), then you're only choice is to cancel the registration you have and start a new one and add the RID SN to it right away. Will cost you $5 but that is the only way... This all assumes you are talking recreational flier, not Part 107. If 107 let me know, it's a little different. Hope this helps!
Hey great video very informative. But I have a question about connecting to the internet for the remote ID To be able to broadcast. I have an area that is located in West Virginia and it’s between mountains many mountains to be exact. And this area doesn’t have cellular service or wifi. When I fly into the area I have to wait until I get back into city limits before getting any signal to my phone. So I don’t see how remote ID can possibly work in locations such as this? I am however able to connect to GPS satellites with my DJI drones. And they still work in this area I just don’t have any internet connection.
Hello and thanks for the question! This is a common misconception as there is no cell service, WiFi or Internet required for Remote ID. This was proposed early on and was eliminated by the FAA before the rule was finalized. Someday they might revisit this, but for now no networking is needed. 🤙
is the new dji mini 4 pro always broadcasting remote id because it is built into the drone, even if your flying under 250G and recreational ?? Is there an option to turn it off under those circumstances ?
Keith, great video! I just ordered the Drone Beacon module. I have the Exo Drones Blackhawk II Pro, where do you suggest mounting the Drone Beacon module? It might fit on top in front of the battery, but that puts it very far forward. Center it front to back and Velcro it to the battery? Thoughts? Also I was looking at the HugeRock X7 drone table from one of the videos you did. Any suggestions how to mount it to the Exo Drones Blackhawk II Pro controller? Thanks
Thanks! This module is a tight fit on the BH2 Pro as I have on on there as well. I ended up on the battery instead of the front. A little more inconvenient but just costs a bit more velcro. 😎 I use a couple of different versions of the tablet holder that I happen to have from the mavic pro days amzn.to/3wKYAmb and I'm able to tighten them up a but with some well placed rubber bands, I suppose I should search out a tighter one, but if you're not worried about fiddling a bit it works ok...
I appreciate that you've gone to the effort here so people afraid to non comply can continue to fly. (that's catchy) I do wonder though, why not make a phone app that puts out the signal and save the weight on the quad. Nobody is going to know the signal comes from the quad and not your phone anyway. It can just randomize the GPS and altitude data, so long as you're fling nearby what's the harm?
I have a question regarding the possible interference the RID Modules may cause the UAS/UAV’s obstacle avoidance system to stop working or not work properly as some Anti Collision LED’s have interfered with that before during testing. Just wondering if anyone has any info on this? Thanks in advance and thanks for the links to the RID Modules page. Really helps get good links to quality parts (for those who do plan to comply with the guidelines that start in September 2023.
One way to try and narrow it down is to check the frequency of the WiFi for the drone and the module. If they both are the same (say 2.4 GHZ) then it's possible there could be interference. I haven't seen anything obvious yet, but it is always possible if there are competing signals.
Thanks for the excellent video on the Drone Beacon module. Received my module and reconfigured it per your video. The reconfig went just as described and the location is not visible using the OpenDroneID app. I'll feel a lot safer knowing my location isn't visible while complying with RID.
You're welcome, and that's awesome! You're the first to let me know the config worked as described, appreciate it. Glad it worked out!
You forgot to mention that the best way to attach the RID module is with at least seven layers of aluminum body-tape, making sure to smooth it down so there are no gaps around the module. 😛
Need to make it pretty! 🎀
Naw just dunk it in salt water first
That's great advice! Thanks
Wouldn't want potentially harmful radiation escaping!!!

Thanks,
Glad it was helpful!
DJI and the other manufacturers need to implement these options in their firmware!
Agreed!
Thanks and good to know. Hope the DJI drones that are now compatible with Remote ID add this "No Karen's" feature. I doubt it!!!
Got my Drone Beacon module, (using your discount code), flashed the firmware, and did the configuration. All very simple and straightforward. Thanks for a very helpful video.
Great to hear, thanks for sharing! 🤙
We need more stuff like this! Ridiculous that drones are more regulated than most weapons at this point.
That’s not true.
@@Sparroh how so
Do you have to pass a test to get a gun? But you have to pass one to legally fly a drone for work?
@@patrickpendergast898 my point exactly
Neither should be regulated
That is great. What would be greater is if the manufacturers would allow that alteration on onboard RID, or perhaps make that the default setting when shipped.

Glad it is helpful, and thanks for taking the time to comment! Indeed, baby steps...
That might come after someone is assaulted and they take the FAA to court.
Finally a workable solution. I was so concerned about thieves and bad people knowing my location that I was willing to go rogue and completely dark or drop the hobby altogether. My safety comes first.
It is a welcome solution for sure!
I plan to use this on my phantom 4 pro if they don’t fix it with firmware (maybe even turn it off I’d they do).
I’ll probably still go with my “if Karen can find me” plan as well though.

Thanks, glad it is helpful!

Hi, thank you! I will probably check this out. I'm always concerned flying alone. This will help a lot.
You're welcome, glad it is useful!
100%, ive been thinking of a few designs, just too lazy to write the firmware
I suppose they're going to spend the rest of their sorry lives running around, keeping that "flood" of batteries charged? Not to mention all their non-existent money they'll be spending on the RIDs in the first place!
@@karlswartz1308 If only a car had a convenient, on-board battery source.
This. Cops sure, Karens and theives/fools with guns no.
@@andrewdrone since clearly the FAA doesn’t care about that, based on what the FAA rep has said during interviews you know what you need to do or rather in this case NOT DO…
I will take it a step further as I HATE that bs argument people use, "well if you have nothing to hide then you should be ok with cops knowing where you are or what you are doing"
This is total bunk.
Happy to help!

Thanks for the rely. In the world of Remote ID Modules, the DB-120 seems to be unique.
I really appreciate that this beacon is now safe to use for our safety from fly haters who take us the wrong way and want to fight or shoot down my drone. It’s good that only faa or law enforcement can see. Thanks
This won't stop someone from shooting down your R/C aircraft.
Remote ID and having the government in my pants… Me no like!
The fact that you can keep the average Joe or Karen in this case LOL from seeing your position big thumbs up.
Thanks for all your information for not only keeping us out of legal trouble, but keeping us safe.
Thanks! I'll take the incremental wins when I can get them for sure! 🤙
F the po-po.
The FCC has thr gall to call it license plate for drones. Another UA-camr said it's more correctly an ankle monitor for drone operators.
Thank You!
Thanks! Glad it is helpful!
Thanks for sharing this information on RID modules.
@@StacemanFPV they could save weight by powering it via the balance lead. Like we do with naked Gopro's. Would also allow it to be made smaller.
This is going to be one of the most popular drone videos ever.
From your comments to UA-cam's ears... lol 😂
If RID is going to report where the pilot is then it should also report where karen is.
RID for Karen’s! love it. 😊
I'm all for that... Oh the outrage there would be!
This is Awesome, I have ordered 2 to cover my fleet.
Nice! It's nice that Bluemark is engaged and innovating for sure! 🤙
Love being able to see everyone's location!
Thank you for this information. I thought I was going to have to retire my drones.
You're welcome, glad it is useful!
This is the 1st RID that makes sense. Cost of over $100 could be a problem considering the cost of drone?
Indeed it makes sense, I agree. If you're handy and want to stick the PCB on/in the drone and power it with the drone it's down to $119, which is better than the $300 that we started with, but of course still might be inhibitive for some and they'll probably just not comply...
I've heard there is a module that cost less than $40 coming out soon. Maybe worth waiting if you're adamant you want to comply.

Nice work! I shared everywhere I could on social media.
Awesome, thanks! 🤙
You're a great American, I subscribed immediately. Loving the channel!

You have always been a voice of reason when it comes to this emotional issue and the only thing that I believe (besides cost) has been an issue is the Karen and criminal problem. This product seems to cover that 100%. Thank you for doing this great video.
Thanks! 🤙 BlueMark was great working with us to get this implemented...
Yep, this. No problem with RID except the public having access to it.
Karen is the right name for someone nosey and picky in this situation when flying a drone near them 😂
I saw this comment on another channel.
Excellent info, THANKS
This video is epic for me. I have an older EXO Cinemaster 2 that works great and I just couldn't justify some of the Remote ID module prices to continue using it for anything beyond recreational use.
Now that there is an option to remain compliant, but thwart the casual snooper, this option is amazing. This should be a feature of any remote ID module. With time running out, I think this is the way I will go. In the future, my drone upgrades will have it on-board, but I'm in that awkward transitional phase with an older drone that I want to keep flying Part 107.
Glad it is useful!
can you move the module from model to model , or do you need one for each model? Thanks for the video.
It depends if you're flying recreational or part 107. In general if recreational you can transfer the module, if part 107 you cannot...
@@AlienDrones Thanks
so what do you do when karen calls the cops (complains it is not broadcasting) and they follow the drone to where you land it?
Great video! Subscribed!

Just coming up to speed on everything, glad I found you!

Thank you! Absolutely agree, trying to DO SOMETHING, and BlueMark was kind enough to listen to my perspective and work to implement a version that at least moves the needle in the right direction. Hopefully we set a precedent that catches on everywhere in the industry! You Heard It Here First! lol 🤙
Hi,
Thanks for your contribution to the firmware enhancements.
If I deactivate the "Reply to active WLAN scanning" function, will that prevent me locating my unit with my own phone when I land off-site?
If so, could the firmware be modified to allow a specific mobile phone access to the signal. That would allow the pilot access whilst excluding the "Karens".
Very informative. Thanks.
🙏
Thanks for this great video!
I would assume this also applies to the DB121pcb since the only difference is lack of battery and remote antennas?
Indeed, that's the thing about rules and laws, only the honest people follow them, and the ones who don't take advantage of them...
I wanna know if you can make a bigger drone show as a mini dji drone with the remote ID. Just curious
I use an add-on strobe light on top of my Mavic, can I mount that on top of this module (so it's still 360 visible?)
So the new firm ware I download to my phone or the module itself?
Both, eventually. You first need to download the firmware to your phone or a PC, whichever device you will be using to configure the module. Then when you connect to the module with that device, you can grab the firmware and load it to the module. Keep in mind unless you have an older db module the firmware is updated already so you shouldn't have to update it... Just did a new video a day ago talking about the new models they have too... ua-cam.com/video/6nrq-DlshcI/v-deo.html 🤙🤙
@ thanks! I’ll check it out!
GREAT work working with Bluemark on the firmware fix. Just an FYI when I received my Db120 it had the new firmware..
Thanks, That's Excellent! They said they would start including it in the next versions, and to be honest I heard Alien Drones sold them out! Was the new firmware configured as in this video or a different default?
Outstanding video! Thank you!
Thanks ! 🤙
You can't change the serial of the transmitter for each different drone?
No, the serial number is fixed per module.
Outstanding Keith. Thanks for the excellent video!
Thanks for the kind words! 🤙🤙
Thanks for the video but I'm Telling the FAA they are number one 😂😂😂
😂
Question... if you retire a drone (Part 107) are you able to reassign the RID Module to a different drone that needs it?
Yes you can.
Thank you so much!! That makes sense. Not sure why they told me otherwise. @@AlienDrones
Is there any way to change the remote channel? Below 1000MHZ, used to avoid counter-guns
THX You're the man !
🤙
Ordered mine and got the discount.
Bought it because if the anti Karen config not the discount.
Thanks.
Alien Drones originated this Anti-Karen work so glad it was useful! 😎
Still flying my5 year old original Mavic Pro ...figure this will work on it and liking the fact that the "karens" wont
see it. Only question I have is whether I should affix the module to the battery or towards the front of
the drone itself. Curious if placement of this module could in anyway interfere with the comms between the drone
and the controller. Are you aware of any testing that has been done to see if remote ID modules can interfere
with drone to controller communications?
@@AlienDrones OK thanks for the info and quick reply.. I will put it on the batteries to be safe.
Thank You. Your work with DroneBeacon firmware was right on the money. Followed your instructions and the db120 is not visible to the civilian tracking apps. Again, Thank You!
Great to hear, Thanks for Sharing!
Indeed, I mentioned that first thing when I received it... 🤙
Lot easier to make a small case in the form of a faraday cage. Remote ID final ruling states the module has to TRANSMIT the data, there is zero requirement for it to be capable of being received X distance from the UAS.
Can't confirm or deny this, but a flying roll cage would have many benefits! 🤙🤙
them modules cost as much as my drone, this is bs.
Is lowering the transmission power legal?
For WLAN no, for Bluetooth yes. If you would lower the WLAN transmit power on the db120 module it will signal that it is in non-compliant mode.
i have a DJI Spark, it's too small to attach anything to it, it's half the size of your Mavic.
Does the RID rule state it must transmit a certain amount of power?
yup
Why if the FAA requires this module is it so hard to find one? Bluemarks prices are in Euros?
There's also 107RID.com, which is a US distributor for these modules for BlueMark. These are in $.
is the new dji mini 4 pro always broadcasting remote id because it is built into the drone, even if your flying under 250G and recreational ?? Is there an option to turn it off under those circumstances ?
It is always broadcasting standard RID and there is no way to turn it off, regardless if you're flying recreational or not.
Perfect! Thank you
🤙🤙
If at any point you need a Karen to make long-range testing, I have one at home that I am not using.
An extra Karen? 😂
Excellent! Thank you very much for the information! I lucked out that you have tried the same things on a BH2 Pro as well. Thanks again!
Thanks! I imagine since some remotes don't need cell phones they wanted to be sure to see the drone...
Thanks for another informative video I was wondering if you know if the "OpenDroneID" app is available for apple phones as I can't find it.
Thanks! I'm unsure, but I thought it was available. Reach out directly to BlueMark and I would think they can tell you for sure...
