Whitney had the glory of God in her voice and I know she is singing his praises in the heavenly choir. When she was a child a hanger became lodged in her throat and the doctors told them she may never talk again but her savior had other plans for her!
I loved re-watching Whitney's version -- truly a gold standard. I always find myself tearing up watching her sing during her prime -- such talent and beauty that ended in such tragedy. I truly wish she had been able to conquer her demons while she was still alive. RIP, Whitney.

Man, it still hurts knowing how much she had to offer the world and losing such a powerhouse. She'll probably forever hold #1 for me, but yeah Chris nailed #2.
I'm honestly not sure if I've seen this before. I would've been a baby at the time she performed this, so probably not. But somehow, only three notes in, I've already got chills. 🥹
Also, famously, she changed the time signature of the anthem. It gives her more room to play around. It was all her idea, too. Normally it’s sung in 3/4, but she changed it to 4/4. Not many thought it was a good idea, but she stuck to her guns and delivered this masterpiece ❤
It was actually arranged by Jazz bassist John Clayton. That’s why it’s in a different meter and the harmonies from the orchestra are quite different from the ones you would expect.
Hi Peter I have known Whit for most of my life. We had a party in FL for one of her career anniversaries and her MD (who did the charts for this told us two things that were remarkable. She listened to the track once and went into the booth and smashed it in one take. She was in & out of the building in less than 30 minutes. The other strange thing was the orchestra hated it because Whit wanted the time signature changed to 4:4. 😮 On a personal note, being close to her when she sang was like getting hit with a freight train of sound. Always amazing & very moving.
No one would ever sing it like Whitney! Chris was good like many others but god was touching Whitney’s shoulders while she was up there singing. This version has made others from around the world cry… Also, Marvin Gay was really good also. This version has sold millions and charted many times.
I think I remember watching something where it was said that she refreshed her memory on the lyrics just a little before the performance, and only practiced singing it once, then went out and DID THAT. If that is true... she truly is the GOAT.
This was undoubtedly the most in depth breakdown of one of the MOST iconic moments in human history. You've broken it down wonderfully and as a singer I can truly appreciate the way your expertise and colorful commentary explained it all. Thank you
Fun fact on this: her music team changed the composition from a 3/4 waltz to a 4/4 time, traditionally used in gospel and r&b music, to fit her style and voice. Properly highlight her talent. She also barely rehearsed it with the new time, basically just went out and did it, because she is magical. (All of this is in a documentary). I always found that really interesting, and can hear the difference now.
That was a pretty cool explanation of Whitney's version of the National Anthem. Unbelievable she was just a normal Pop Charts Singer in the the 80s/90s. Talent beats Autotune.
@@krystalivery45 Don't get me wrong. I love Whitney and she was an amazing vocalist. But she was also a Pop Charts singer. The charts had a way better musical quality those days. Taylor Swift would have been just one of many artists in the 80s.

Thank you Peter, I know absolutely nothing about singing or music, BUT I love good music and beautiful singing voices more than anything. Whitney was a winner for sure and your analysis are great and yes I do learn so much👍👍❤️❤️
Pink said it best in an interview recently. Whitney and Chris Stapleton are the only two people who should ever sing the National Anthem now. She also said, why would any singers ever attempt to sing it after he KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK. I will say I think Pentatonix also did a great job when they did it recently.
@Moral Hazard actually it was Marvin's version that inspired Whitney and her music director to rearrange the star spangled for that particular performance.
She literally sings by the music, when she gets to gave proof there is an instrument in the same key as she is, so that makes the transition from belting to mixed voice easier because proof is not all head voice I think it's a mixed voice.
She is still my spouse, my go to. I heard W when I was 6 and just by listening to her songs and by watching one of the best and some vocal training and techniques... you know what you're talking about! So watching this analyzing vid, witch in the most of time i don't like to watch yours is like it should be, educational, explained and you've got ears and a hearing. Every word and explanation I agree. ❤ and she was one of the best!
Please do an analysis of Whitney's LIVE performance of "All The Man I Need" from her Welcome Home Heroes Concert at Norfolk, VA. You'll love it! Also her LIVE performance of "One Moment In Time" at the Grammys. This one Vocally is as Good if not better than her Star Spangled Banner performance! Her vocals here are at their finest!
I appreciate anyone who sings the anthem as it's written. Too many take unfortunate chances. The first singer I heard who made me enjoy the anthem was Robert Merrill (for the Yankees) - it was much later that I discovered he was an opera singer. It opened my mind up to greater styles of music.
I do appreciate the whole "vets are smart" thing people assume. You're a badass pilot and here you are giving singing lessons to the most epic of people, as if your air skill is relevant to Whitney's performance.
Jazmine Sullivan also slays the National Anthem. She's sung it a number of time and its soo amazing. Whitney worked with John Clayton for this as this is a different arrangement.
allways was curious of what an opera singer would think of her. She seems to have the power of an opera singer with a slight touch of gospel to add character to the tone. the mixture and back and forth between the two works perfectly for her
The best female voice I've ever heard in my life🥺❤❤
The transitions she pulled....untouchable. Beautiful!!!
Her and Karen Carpenter were the best in my lifetime
she was just incredible, left people in awe. For me, Aretha Frankling and Whitney were my vote for GOATS.
