I saw Whitney in concert (1987), and was stunned -- and thrilled -- that not a single note was even the tiniest bit flat or sharp. After she passed, Lionel Ritchie recalled how they used to teasingly call her "the gift" because she'd go into studio to sing for a track and nail it in ONE take.
I’ve listened to the audio concerts from her first two tours and I haven’t found one with a single missed note or her ever taking a short, singing every song and always singing them differently. Although it was the same set list, each show took me on a different, thrilling ride! They also called her One-Take Houston per her bodyguard. He said the coffee would still be hot and she would be completely done recording. She said herself that she would sometimes do a second take to give the producer options lol. The GOAT!!!
believe me, they did. Whitney's rendition of the National Anthem literally topped the music charts after this. Name one other person who can top the charts with the National Anthem!
Yesss, like that woman singing along and waving the flag 😅 Gosh, i really wonder what she must be thinking everytime she sees this recording and realizes the scope of that performance 😂😊
I'm SWAHILI but I believe Whitney Houston is THE GREATEST VOCALIST OF ALL TIME I just can't believe I'm binge watching someone else's national anthem 😭❤️👑
Forget the Super Bowl and the national anthem. This is one of the greatest vocal performances of all time, period. There will never be another Whitney.
You asked how many people? > 750 million around the world were RIVETED by this performance, and not one has ever forgotten it - nor will anyone EVER sing it better. It’s HERS.
And she is so relaxed, smiling at people, and making it look so effortless. Sad because she looks so happy and healthy. Loss of a national treasure for sure
I'm German and I feel patriotic in an American way. ;) Thx great comment to the great Whitney Houston. I'm glad having seen her live in Frankfurt 1988 that was one of the best live concerts I've ever seen.
This is the America I envy. Everyone seemed so proud and devoted during this time. I hate how divided we are now. I can't say that I'm truly proud of my country today.
I remember people were so amazed that they didn’t believe she sung it, so she opened the Welcome Home Heroes concert with it and nailed it again. There was another one she did at a Lakers game in the 80s that was totally different and in a high key, more soprano than mezzo that was great! Thanks for the video, it brought back good memories!!
This version IS the greatest ever sang. I realize that others are more apt to pick somebody from their generation. I watched it when it happened & it was unbelievable. My goosebump’s goosebumps had goosebumps. As far as never hearing her sing a bad note, you won’t until after Bobby Brown helped her get on her cocaine habit. Her voice was never the same as it was in the 80’s & 90’s!
Ok so what you’re not gonna do is start that blame Bobby mess again. It has already been documented that Whitney was already doing drugs before she met Bobby. Now while he may not have stopped her, he did not introduce her to it.
Uh…, Whitney had her very first 8-ball as a birthday “gift” when she was 16 years old. BB had nothing to do with her being introduced to drugs. People she dated before him ended relationships with her due to her cocaine use.
I was watching it right then and there, and I remember feeling - with goosebumps - that it was the absolute best I had ever heard. These decades later . . . I still feel the same.
Great reaction and analysis! Whitney nailed it perfectly. One thing that is often overlooked is the orchestral arrangement. The arranger was jazz great, John Clayton. He changed the time signature from 3/4 to 4/4 and modified the chord structure just enough to give you those goosebump moments. Combined with Whitney's voice and a great orchestra, this rendition hit the Trifecta of greatness. I love Chris Stapleton's version (and he's from my home state of Kentucky), but I enjoy Whitney's more.
Whitney does put a few riffs, runs and alternate notes in here and makes it her own, but the difference is that everyone else feels like they’re trying too hard to make it their own. Whitney makes it seem so effortless that it feels like the anthem has always been this incredible and it’s not, she changed the game forever and everyone who followed was trying to top what she did even though they never will
She is just beautiful Whitney in her American colored athletic suit...belting it. She is completely comfortable here. I'm sure this is not the first time she has sung it...but she knows it needs to be the best time she has ever done it. She is so confident because she knows how to sing...add in her smile, precious demeanor and it is awe inspiring.
Watch this version in which she sang the first verse acapella. ua-cam.com/video/qM9-DONjnTc/v-deo.html Whitney Elizabeth Houston is a once in human existence miracle/gift that must be cherished for our future generations to hear and see what true greatness and vocal divinity sounds and looks like!
That's the finest version of the national anthem period that every time you hear someone sings the national anthem you can't help but think back of her rendition as the greatest of all time. You're so true, no side riffs but original as it gets. Oh so powerful and beautiful. The greatest ever Whitney Houston.
My family and I saw this live on TV and were blown away! I remember for the longest time all the major American TV shows but good morning America and the today show could not stop talking about her performance
I agree with you 100% my friend. She was for sure a legend and this is by far the best rendition and always will be. Nobody will ever touch her natural beauty and talent. Clearly this was no struggle for her to sing....it was easy and natural as she smiled away. I miss still miss her. RIP Whitney Houston.
It was because of THIS right here that so many other people have tried to do what she did and NO ONE could ever do it like her. Why she's the GOAT. She still is the only artist to hit the Billboard Hot 100 Chart not once BUT twice with this. It first peaked at #20 just weeks after she performed this and then after the 9/11 attacks, they re-released it and it did EVEN BETTER, reaching the top ten, peaking at #6!!! She had it all. Drop dead gorgeous, could act, could sing but ironically, with one of her biggest hits being "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)," she couldn't dance. Re-watch that video!
She sang this in February 1991 towards the end of the Gulf War. US Patriotism is running high. Her rendition captured the collective patriotism of the country.
Nick, I couldn't agree more wholeheartedly with your assessment of the way she sings it--as it was written, pure and simple. The way you summed it up couldn't have been better--it wasn't about her or for her, but for the song itself, and what it means. Then, as if that wasn't enough, as she was leaving the stage, there was a 4-jet flyover! Wow!
Whitney was musical performer perfection, the likes of which we will never see again. I love that she didn't change the anthem at all in an attempt to make it about herself. She led the nation in this moment when we had just gone to war in the Persian Gulf and we were entirely uncertain as to what was going to happen to our family members who were over there.
You said it. ‘I don’t think I’ve heard Whitney Houston sing a note out of tune.’ She didn’t need help, technology to do that. Just her absolute talent as a musician.
Well...have you forgotten Karen Carpenter? She just as good a vocalist, with a bigger range, goes lower to mid soprano. Whitney was at her prime and 'in the moment,' most of us were. She knew this was a BIG freaking deal.
