    Hi!
    I have sown my lophophora williamsii seeds from my mother plant that I harvested earlier on this year. I couldn't find John Inns in my country - I used cactus re potting mix (sieved) that had sand and grit in it already. Then just added perlite. Cooked the mixture in the oven, sterilized my containers - planted and bagged them yesterday. Holding thumbs that the seven seeds grow :D

    I just watch your video on how to sow cactus seeds and save the video. I was wondering if I should cover with with a plastic bag and now I know. I can't wait to see the grow. Thank you again for the the information. And have a Happy Happy Happy Monday. Today I going to try and plant my Mums. It has been raining the last couple of days. So the ground should be more easy to plant my Mums. Thank you for your video again.

    Love your videos and positive energy! One tip I use to keep track of my different varieties and potting mixes is to write it out on a legal pad size of paper- usually using a Sharpie marker so it's easy to read- and then I take a few photos and maybe a short video to record the dates/varieties/mixes.
    I just put them all in a folder named 'cactus notes' or something clever like that. Make a really handy reference, especially since cactus can take years to grow. It's great to have the notes and photos to look back on.

    Thanks for posting the video. Inspired me to sow some Saguaro cactus seeds back in January. Now three months on I am due to undo my ziplock bag and over the next few days free the seedlings from their plastic bag environment. Then they'll be out to the greenhouse where I will shield them from direct sun and hope that they grow on and then maybe next year I can move them out of their ready meal containers, who'd have though a two part ready meal container could prove so useful :-)
    Thanks again and fingers crossed that they survive.

    How awesome is that? The Queen with little baby Queens, wow! OK let's see, we should mix up some grimy dirt and make a big mess in the kitchen. Then, stir in ten pounds of happiness...add a pinch of moisture, sow some seeds and then absorb some cool rays, on a daily basis, for at least three months. That sounds like an exotic vacation plan. I like the way that you think, haha! Thanks

    Great video. I've had good success with the baggie method too. I also like the clear containers that are the clamshell type with the lid attached to the bottom compartment, at the rear. I use almost the exact same process you do, but I use a planting mix that's about 60% sand. A very light layer of sand sifted on top of the seeds keeps away the algae and mold too.

    great video, I cant wait to try doing it like this. I planted some succulent seeds (I suppose this video is suitable for them to) in self watering pots last week before I saw this video. I now realise there is quite a few things I could of done better so I hope they still grow (I didn't sterilize soil, there was chunks in the mix I used so I wish I had used a sieve, the top of the soil may of dried out a little too much). I still have some seeds so will try this way now too.

LOL, instead of writing all this down, and having to stash paper somewhere, I cropped 36 screen captures and filed them in a folder: LynGrow;-) I love cacti, and Pepper Plants. I bet that soil would work well for peppers too, I don't know! I would like to see the next stage, how to remove those cacti buttons (whatever they're called) without destroying them like a cave man! I decided on a whim to buy some cactus and succulent seeds from Amazon and then spent last weekend looking at how to grow them. This video obviously popped up and while I haven't followed it 100%, I have used potting compost and I have used small plant pots and just a few seeds to see if I could get them to grow. I sewed them on Monday and got I got back from work this afternoon and I can see at least 3 little sprouts starting to grow. Hopefully the rest will start growing over the next few days. So thanks for showing me this easy way of growing them.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  8 років тому +2

      Hi Chloe :-) thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching :-) after 3 months and once you have got them out the bags I would still keep them lightly watered until they are at least 6 months old and are resembling smaller versions of the adult plants, once they are larger after 6 months or more you still need to water them regularly but letting the soil dry out slightly in between watering them before watering them again, its best to not let the soil go dry for long periods when they are still young but after about 18 months you can treat them more like adult cacti with their watering requirements :-) Hope this helps and sending you an abundance of love and happiness from Ireland and have a fantastic week ahead XXXX

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  7 років тому +2

      Hi Ayan :-) If you are growing your cactus seeds in the bags as in this video then you don't need to worry about the excess moisture as they will have been growing in a sterile environment, but if you are growing your seeds in a grow box you could poke some holes or leave the lid off the box slightly open to release any excess moisture to provide some ventilation for them, but keep the soil moist at all times so the young seedlings do not dry out and lose their fragile roots :-) sending you lots of love and happy growing from India and have a wonderful Friday XXXXX

      Hi Alby :-) if you notice mold appearing when they are inside the bags its best then to remove the bags, and I have it sometimes still happen to me even though I have sterilized the soil, but then you would be best to remove them from the bags if you notice mold, If the mold is only slight you can remove the mold with a thorough watering and let the water run through the pots and then give the seeds/ seedlings plenty of ventilation, but if the mold is more severe you may be best to treat with a horticultural fungicidal spray immediately as mold can wipe out seedlings very fast :-) good luck with your seeds and sending lots of love and happy growing from Ireland XXXX

    Hello cactus queen, I was wondering if you could make a video on how to clean up Trichocereus Grandiflorus seeds. I have such a difficult time cleaning up the seeds. I put the gel with the seeds in a bowl of water and swish it around to separate the seeds as much as I can. Then slowly pour the water onto a paper towel. I try to get all the gel off but it’s really frustrating for me. When it dries some seeds are incased in the gel. I got to spray the dried up gel to release the seeds then I got to get another paper towel to dry those seeds again ugh! There’s got to be an easier way. Thank you for your wonderful cactus content and being our cactus teacher! ❤❤❤❤

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  11 місяців тому +1

      Thats fantstic you have seeds from your trichocereus gradiflorus, argh yes Trichocereus seeds are the one of the hardest to harvest due to their gelly fruit inside the seed pods, unfortunately I dont have any seed pods on my Trichocereus cacti this year, but when I do I definitely will film a video, I find that using a hand held tea strainer sieve is the best method, I put all the gel with the seeds in the tea strainer and run under the tap for about an hour, I keep swirling the seeds around in the tea strainer under the running water tap, and after a while the seeds start to separate from the gel, the gel eventually washes away leaving all the seeds behind in the tea strainer, I then scoop out the seeds onto a dry paper towel, its very time consuming though LOL! and the patience of an absolute Saint is needed haha, I used to empty the fruits with seeds and gel into a bowl of water too, but my friend at the cactus society told me about the tea strainer method and its much better, I hope it works for you, and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you tons of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Sunday ahead XXXX

The temperature here will be dropping into the 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit range soon (10-15 degrees Celsius), would you suggest placing the plastic bags with seed trays on top of a heat mat set to 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius) during the first 3 months? Hi Larissa :-D thats wonderful news you will be growing Cleistocactus colamononsis Monkeys tail from seeds, yes a heat mat would be a wonderful booster for your seeds and it will help to encourage faster germination, and if you have a plant grow light this would also give your seeds a good boost, the LED plant grow lights are brilliant and very cost effective to run on electricity, but as long as you have a bright position for the seedlings they will grow well, and a heat mat for the first 3 months would really help them grow faster, good luck with growing from seed and thanks so much for your wonderful support and comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday today XXXX

    Hi. This is a very helpful video. I have 3 questions.
    1) What is the purpose of the sand if you are already using perlite?
    2) Can a person use silica sand?
    3) Can a person use a general potting soil mix?
    Thanks in advance.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  3 роки тому

      Hi Darren :-D yes you can use silica sand too, and a lot of sand sold for horticultural use is silica sand too, the sand adds a bit of extra drainage as well as the perlite, but many growers use extra perlite and or grit instead of using the sand, yes you can use a general potting mix too and add 50% perlite or grit instead, as long as the soil mix is well draining it will be safe to use for seed sowing, Good luck with growing from seed and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday today XXXX

    Hello! And thank you for the amazing videos! I have a question, is it possible to plant seeds in a gritty mix? I use bonsai Jack's succulent gritty mix and unfortunately in my country it's hard to get the stuff you used, we have peat moss, and perlite but that's about it. My succulent cuttings seem to grow nicely in the gritty mix but I want to try growing from seed in it. Is it possible?

    Hi Lyn, I love your videos and have been watching them religiously while I experiment with growing cacti and succulents from seeds. Thank you!! I was wondering if you have any videos about how to care for adolescent cacti/succulents, meaning once you remove them from the baggies. Do you continue watering them regularly, so the soil is always damp? Or do you start cutting back and water them as you would a mature plant? Thanks so much!!

      Hi Marina :-) thank you so much for your wonderful comment, so happy to hear that you are growing cacti and succulents from seeds :-) I haven't made any videos on caring for seedlings after removing them from the baggies but that a brilliant idea and will definitely plan on making one in the near future :-) once they have come out of the bags then you can start to let the soil start to dry out slightly in between waterings but not to let the soil go completely dry, but just enough to keep them lightly moist, to overwinter them you are best to keep them in a heated room in a sunny window if possible at a minimum of 10c / 50f of an evening, because when the seedlings are young during their first Winter they don't need an overwintering period like normal cacti and most succulents do and they will still want to carry on growing during the Winter, once the seedlings get through their first Winter into the Spring and they are starting to fill out their pots you can treat them more like normal cacti and succulents with their watering schedules :-) hope this helps and I will plan on making a future video in the next few weeks on caring for seedlings once they have come out of their baggies :-) sending you heaps of love and happy growing from Ireland for a FANTASTIC Thursday XXXXX

    I managed to produce seedlings using your method!
    But I had left them in their baggies for 3 years. Now I took them out and watered a bit. Wonder how hardy they are and if they can come back to life.

    Hello, I know I comment a lot but your my favorite cactus grower. I have a question. When do I start treating seedlings like adults? They’re a year old now 🥰 thanks for all the knowledge you have given me

      Thanks so much, I am so happy that I am your favourite cactus grower, Thats wonderful you have Cactus seedlings, I usually treat them as adults when they are about the size of a thumbnail, some cacti grow much faster than others, but if they are still a year old its best to keep them still as seedlings but allow the soil to dry out that little bit longer in between waterings, thanks so much for your wonderful comments and support and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Friday XXXX
