Really excellent tips. I especially like your idea of scouting the area.
Once you get to learn an area and combine that with knowledge of your wildlife subject makes for some interesting experiences.
One bonus of learning the habits of several wildlife subjects is they can help you locate others. For me this is learning the calls of American Crows, Red Squirrels, and Black-capped Chickadees in my area. All are quite common and have helped locate Barred Owls, Hawks, Eagles, Red Foxes, Raccoons, and others. :)
