Star Trek: Discovery, Episode 2x14 "Such Sweet Sorrow, Part Two"
COMMANDER SARU: Mr. Rhys, set all phasers for automatic targeting, maximum power and range.
MR. RHYS: Aye, Commander.
COMMANDER SARU: Owo, bring the emergency generators on line.
OFFICER OWO: Shields holding at 70%.
CAPTAIN GEORGIOU: Leland won't destroy this ship immediately. He'll cripple us and take the data. Then he'll break Discovery down for parts.
COMMANDER SARU: Do you have anything relevant to offer?
CAPTAIN GEORGIOU: Invite him aboard.
COMMANDER SARU: Whatever you have in mind, this is not a two-pronged mission. The first priority is to get. Discovery to safety with Commander Burnham.
CAPTAIN GEORGIOU: For you, perhaps. You should know me well enough by now to know I leave very little to chance. Especially when it comes to revenge.
COMMANDER RENO: Good to go. Crystal's fully charged.
COMMANDER SARU: Ensign Tilly, go with her and make sure it gets to Commander Burnham safely.
COMMANDER RENO: He means in case one of us gets dead along the way.
COMMANDER SARU: Hurry!
COMMANDER RENO: I'm going, I'm going. Get off my ass. Sir! Get off my ass, sir!

One must always show respect when responding to a senior officer. Using "Sir" or "Ma'am" at the end of a sentence always get's one out of the most precarious situation.
While everyone else is talking about the line can we take a moment to appreciate Tilly's face?
I bet Tilly is a freak in the sheets!
Tilly, Tendi, and Rok-Tahk make up the holy trinity of Star Trek cinnamon rolls.

Paramont... granted!
Oh hell yes!
With her sass & her engineering prowess? She’d be an amazing Chief Engineer.
Jett Reno is one of the few characters that make this show tolerable!

I do really love Reno. She's a terrific engineer which can assume this tone toward her commanding officer because of her skills and capacities and Saru accepts this without bringing her to the brig because he knows how much efforts she puts in her work. This might seems edgy in a Trek series but I find this extremely Trek-y after all as she seems to embody both Scotty and McCoy at the same time and declines them in her very own way. She seems unable to follow all rules and goes against many of them but this is, by definition, something Star Trek engineers are made for. They can change laws of physic, they can fix everything and they always come up with the best solutions. They feel this way. By definition. Take Torres, for example. Or Scotty (both prime and kelvin timeline too). Or Trip. Or O'Brien. They all share this kind of innate and funny disrespectful attitude against rules.
OBrien summed it up nicely with "They're not bridge officers... they're engineers"
She is every tech person I have ever worked with that didn't mind getting their hands dirty 🤣
Saru didn’t bring her up because they literally had more important things to worry about. Though in the more recent episode, Tilly should have told the ‘shall I execute?’ Guy to task by telling him ‘you heard the order.’ Discipline doesn’t have to be absolute, but respect of command is required, and in situations where the ship is getting attacked, relies on the discipline engrained during peace time.
Discovery is also from the "cowboy era" of Starfleet, when regs and rules were often more openly bent or even broken for the sake of a mission...5 year missions in unexplored space, less direct contact with command (Discovery is a notable exception to that last one, they always have contact with someone in brass), and a distinct lack of ship's counselors to help round out all the rough edges and eccentricities of a crew of absolute madfellows who are just crazy enough to actually go on one of these suicidal ventrues...
...Engineer Reno also spent quite a bit of time, on her own, stuck on a crashed transport in a hostile environment, breaking every rule about jury-rigging and system tolerances in the book, just to keep a bunch of patients stuck in cryo alive.
...she makes her other madfellow miracle workers, seem like docile repair drones.
You can't expect to bend the rules of reality without first bending the rules of starfleet.
thanks for posting this scene I love JETT RENO
Why?
@@O1OO1O1 her lack of fucks and earned arrogance make her very charming
Fuck you
"Get off my ass! Sir! Get off my ass Sir!": Reno deserves credit for openly saying what Scotty, LaForge, O'Brien and literally the entire crew of Voyager all wanted to say to their captains!
No sir, scotty, Laforge, O'Brien, Tores, Trip...they didn't say things like that because in the future people are supposed to be better than they are today. Sure, the scene was funny but her response was still rude and that is part of who she is. I don't mind her rude/edgy comments to Stamets, he is a bit of a narcissist and someone needs to knock him down a peg or to...but making a similar rude comment to the Captain while in the middle of a battle...that shows a weak mind, a lack of self control. Apologizing for being an ass doesn't mean you're a good person if that how you act most of the time. Also, her line plays into the very frequent scenes of women putting down men. I don't see how we went from voyager, with a strong female captain, a good 50/50 mix of male/female cast to Discovery which seems to have many more women than men...and the men that are there are either gay, weak or a bad guy.
@@999benhonda this is new Trek, featuring poorly written 21st century characters.
You're right. There aren't any good non-diverse male characters on Discovery, are there?
@@O1OO1O1
to be fair, the characters in the other Trek vintages, also evolved and got better with time mostly.
@@tracyavent-costanza346 I tested that with TNG. People say that Trek gets better over time. one episode of season 1 TNG was hugely more compelling and better than almost every episode of Discovery. Multiple episodes of season 1 TNG make Discovery feel like bad fan fiction with a high budget, or a generic Sci-Fi space show.
It's bad. Like the Disney Star Wars sequels. Maybe some people enjoy them. Doesn't make it good.
Why am I saying this? People get confused about this alll the time. They think I'm some villain. I want good stuff! If we pretend bad stuff is good, good stuff is less likely to happen. Like if we had a parade from Trump, saying, yay for you for inciting insurrection. You rock.
@@O1OO1O1
you are entitled to your own opinion. Generally I thought TNG spoke more to me than Trek original but I was pretty much an adult when TNG came out. So more-complicated concepts appealed to me. Later I did find that some "original" plot lines did sort of explore characters but maybe I was just not paying that much attention. After DS9 I really have not watched that many since for a long time I resisted paying ridiculous fees for "premium" cable. So there is a lot of the newer stuff that I have not seen and that also applies to some of the later star wars flicks.
Tilly's reaction was priceless.

My goodness I this character so much yes I agree she isn't most Normal star trek characters I've ever seen in fact she's probably one most unusual star trek characters I've ever seen in a long time I just find it funny she said that last part to saru! Who's a serious man with a kind manner that's hard to get right with saru's type of personality yes we've seen with this personality combo many times really have something unique about him in fact it's a star trek Star trek signature type personality or all those qualities to make a good captain or a good person in charge of the very most but back to Reno she's just something to earth and something special a personality we don't usually get to see in Star trek too often for reasons I do understand but she's a fun night combo similar to Scotty and Dr McCoy her personality seems even truly different from them but more close to scotty's tho real view of comparing it I really hope we get to see more of her soon in this season 3 or in season 4 I would be super upset if they let go of the character for whatever reason I won't get at the actor or even the show itself they have a huge crew size actually in main line light I think? I all know is that she's part of the main crew or a strong support character that actually helps with discoverys honestly not the normal themes of star trek and it's dark hinted sides of it come on she may be the ideal star fleet officer but she's a fun and pretty fresh breath of air in a series that's has those dark themes and that's trying to be more serious light hearted closer to what star trek is known for this kind of character is actually very important for this new season and hopefully for season 4! I hope they get more episodes in season 4 at least five episodes in it
Tilley is one of the reasons I keep watching on UA-cam.

Shields at 70%, yet panels are exploding everywhere...
Welcome to Star Trek. Wouldn't be right if panels weren't sparking every time they took a hit despite having shields.
And Muggles flying about the bridge, too
Whoever designs the shields on Starfleet ships apparently routes all power surges to the bridge. I hope anyway. On the Galaxy-class it's pretty scary to imagine the schoolkids being flung around the classroom as their terminals explode in their faces!

As brilliant as that would've been, I'm pretty sure it was in the script.

Yet another scene boldly displaying why this...
...is not Star Trek. This would have, in most circumstances, gotten the crewman ejected from the bridge.
Only other instamce I can think of something similar is when Uhura snaps at Kirk in that one episode of TOS, but the conditions are different then because a slow doom is creeping up on them all and O'Rieley has hijacked the comm systems.

What the fuck did you people do to Star Trek?
What'd we expect from Universal Studios? Make this better? Nah, didn't think so!
ooh!! Its funny because they so want to be the Orville!!!
Um nobody wants to be canceled by their parent company and put online delaying the 3rd season. Hmm family guy originally was cancelled by fox. Cleveland got cancelled. Now orrvile. His western tanked at the box office.....but what's the connection? 🤔
@@bemasaberwyn55 OK
Seth had made some crappie things, yes. I had no interest in the west!
But the Orville he go right and its has been renewed for its 3rd season.
The Oville blends the best of his comedy and the best of star trek story telling. Something that discovery writes try and fail to copy.
@@kevesdancey I said delaying season 3. Which happened. You're entitled your stupid opinion about a b grade sci-fi masquerading as great sci-fi show, but I think with the flop of west, and having so many projects cancled(being repicked up after a cult following...emphasis on cult doesn't change the initial cancellation) it is clear he's not a great writer. Or leadng man. The glorified filmed larping session put me to sleep 8 times before I stopped watching. The other had some of the best Trek since season 3of TNG started. Discovery was doing SO GOOD with ratings that doing the math and we're 1200 days since Vulcan Hello aired(3 years, 3 months, 17 days ago). In those 1200 days we got an anthology series that's been on for 2 seasons. A new animated series (which was more hilarious than that 8 hour fan fic slog) A post Nemesis live action Trek. 23 straight weeks of Trek which hasn't happened since Enterprise season 4 started. And the projects in various stages of preproduction which are a Pike series. A Section 31 series and a Nickelodeon series which has been recording. On top of that season 4 of Discovery, season 2 of Lower Decks and Picard. As well as a possible season 3 of Short Treks. Kurtzman Era Trek is a renaissance of Trek. Not a family guy in space

call me a stick in the mud, but there’s a reason this is unacceptable to do to superiors. it undermines their authority to have a subordinate talk back to them. even if it’s meant to be humorous, the idea is planted into the subconscious of every crew member present. on top of that, Georgiou is actively questioning his orders

@@ATearThroughReality Generations and above were late 80's through 2000's. Not really bright are you? :)
Lol right, I'm dumb because you didn't specify an era. Most of the whining I see about "real trek" is from morons clinging to the TOS era who can't accept that our idea of what's futuristic has moved on. The rest can't seem to wrap their heads around the concept that the Federation isn't as perfect as portrayed in TNG, DS9, or Voyager. This is, in fact, Star Trek. It's got fictional starships fighting fictional battles with fictional technology in a fictional universe with fictional aliens. That's all Star Trek is. You're either butthurt because you've been shown that the Federation is as deeply flawed as any other organization, unable to accept that not everything has to be explained to you or even make logical sense, or you're clinging to filming, editing, and production techniques that have long since been phased out in favor of cheaper, more efficient, cooler/more futuristic looking alternatives. In any case, stop overthinking it. Science fiction is entertainment. Entertainment is for relaxation, not detailed overanalysis of the color differences between Picard's tea in TNG vs STP.
