"The Four Horsemen" is the second track off of Metallica's debut album, Kill 'Em All. It is based on the older song "The Mechanix."
For "The Four Horsemen," James Hetfield rewrote the lyrics and Kirk Hammett added a solo in the middle.
"The Four Horsemen" was originally written by Dave Mustaine in his former band Panic entitled "The Mechanix". The song was one of Metallica's staples during their clubbing days, albeit with no melodic interlude and different lyrics. The original lyrics were roughly about a sexual encounter at a gas station. James Hetfield has gone on to say the lyrics were "silly".
The original song "The Mechanix" was later released with its original lyrics on Megadeth's debut album "Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good!" as "Mechanix", with a new intro and a much, much faster tempo.
Kill 'Em All is the debut studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica, released on July 25, 1983. Metallica began by playing shows in local clubs in Los Angeles. They recorded several demos to gain attention from club owners and eventually relocated to San Francisco to secure the services of bassist Cliff Burton.
The album did not enter the Billboard 200 until 1986, when it peaked at number 155, following Metallica's commercial success with its third studio album, Master of Puppets; the 1988 Elektra reissue peaked at number 120. Kill 'Em All was critically praised at the time of its release and has since been regarded as a groundbreaking album for thrash metal, because of its "precise musicianship, which fused new wave of British heavy metal riffs with hardcore punk tempos". It was also retrospectively placed on a few publications' best album lists. The album's musical approach and lyrics were markedly different from rock's mainstream of the early 1980s and inspired a number of bands who followed in a similar manner.
Metallica is an American heavy metal band. The band was formed in 1981 in Los Angeles by vocalist and guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, and has been based in San Francisco for most of its career. Metallica's current lineup comprises founding members and primary songwriters Hetfield and Ulrich, longtime lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, and bassist Robert Trujillo. Guitarist Dave Mustaine, who formed Megadeth after being fired from Metallica, and bassists Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted are former members of the band.

IMO this is probably the best song from their debut album and one of their best overall. As for more recommendations, I’d suggest Seek and Destroy, Creeping Death, Disposable Heroes, Blackened, and The God That Failed.

You have acknowledged megadeths existence, now do holy wars the punishment due. It's the opening track of 1990 album rust in peace, which is considered by many to be one of the greatest thrash albums of all time and is the first album to feature lead guitarist Marty Friedman, who introduced a unique Jpop influence to the trash sound. Holy wars itself is a song with an interesting song structure and complicated riffs and use of other instruments, as well as meaningful lyrics.
Seek on their first album with horsemen a close second. If you include their 2nd album, there’s just too many good ones to choose from.
can we just acknowledge how he puts so much effort into each and every video like he actually takes time going over the band's/song history, analyzes the lyrics, has an expert's corner section which focuses on the music theory aspect, and divides the video into the separate sections

I'm practically BEGGING you to listen to "Diary of a Madman" by Ozzy Osbourne. I think you will LOVE how well crafted and unique it is. Between Randy Rhoads's beautifully crafted guitar playing and Ozzy's voice portraying haunting lyrics and melodies backed up by a choir, there is no way you can dislike it. You also have been missing out on Ozzy historically! There is so much entertaining and tragic history involved with him and his music. Please be sure to check out Ozzy, whether it be his solo career or his early days with the original Black Sabbath line up

If he gets into Sabbath, he should totally listen to something off Sabbatoge like Symptom of the Universe or The Writ. Ozzy sounds fucking crazy on the album its incredible
@b0tchwho918 THE WRIT is such an incredibly produced song. The whole album is incredibly produced! Ozzy's voice shines through so well, the belting and yelling is crazy. The grinding tempo of The Writ, the Jazz switch to Symptom of the Universe, The power from Ozzy and that paino on Megalomania! Sabatoge is an album with SO SO MUCH to offer. The composition and change in The Writ makes me tear up!
I think this is the Metallica review I appreciate the most so far I think, the more you get familiar with metal and better understand and appreciate context to put it in perspective your scores becomes more well justified. While at the same time not sacrificing too much of your own core intentions with the channel in how you review and base your reviews just to idk, please bias listeners. You're becoming one of my go-to's.

James' vocals have changed and matured so much from the first album to the ones nowdays. Im assuming you havent heard anything from the later albums, so I would recommend The day that never comes, to get your mind blown with the vocal change.
Other recommendations I have for you are (ranked in progressiveness, least to most)
Leprous - Nighttime Disguise, Gojira - Global Warming, Ne Obliviscaris - Equus
The latter two will be harder to listen to, but they are so good once you give them a couple of listens.
I think another song you would love is "Call of Ktulu" by Metallica, even though it is an instrumental, the instruments tell a seperate story on their own, especially the bass, I would highly recommend it because you mentioned the story of this song, but the special thing about "Call of Ktulu" is that it tells a story with only instruments, and that's the mind-blowing thing about that song and the reason why I recommend it.
That song is a masterpiece, it’s sort of divided in sections for every horseman, and the galloping sound is awesome. Very underrated! I Hope you listen to “halo on fire” , and “ spit out the bone “ it’s from later album.
Phenomenal song. This is the highlight of the debut album, and as you mentioned, the blueprint for thrash epics that followed.
Just discovered your channel and I appreciate the effort you put into it. I’ve been a die hard Metallica Ride or Die fan since 1985. Saw them live in 1986 for the 1st of 23 shows (#22 & 23 coming in November).
I think you’d enjoy seeing the band do a show with the San Francisco Philharmonic Orchestra. They did a show and a live DVD and I can’t recommend anything stronger than “No Leaf Clover”. The concert was called “S&M”. You’ll love it.

Death - Crystal Mountain
Quite possibly the best death metal song ever written. Also a good intro to death metal bc despite only using harsh vocals, they aren’t overly harsh like they are in, say, any song by Immolation.
Immortal - At the Heart of Winter
A pretty solid introduction to black metal. I quite like the main guitar riff on this one, and the intro is also pretty good.
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
The title track from their fifth album. Also one of their best and it’s been a while since you’ve done an Iron Maiden review.
Judas Priest - Painkiller
In my opinion, this is *the* essential heavy metal song. It perfectly captures the defining characteristics of the genre.
Megadeth - Holy Wars... the Punishment Due
One of the best thrash metal songs ever written. If you ask around in the metal community enough, you’ll find that there’s a bit of a debate about who’s better between Megadeth and Metallica; my two cents is that Metallica is better overall, but Megadeth’s 1990 album Rust in Peace is probably the best thrash album period. The stuff on here is essential listening, and there’s no better place to start than the opening track.
Opeth - The Moor
A very good example of Opeth’s more death metal-aligned stuff.

Solid recommendations. I've been striving for any Death - Crystal Mountain reaction and Immortal (with the whole Black Metal genre) is sooooo criminally overlooked nowadays.
I would love to see a death reaction and crystal mountain is definitely one of there more accessible songs to non metal fans. Also any rust in peace reaction would be great to see.

This was a first of its kind. I was one of those fortunate ones who had the chance to hear this when it first came out and my band played several of their tunes back then.
I remember discovering Metallica around when i was 16. I was already on to them with One and Sandman, but when I heard this song the first time it blew my mind. Still remains a staple of my musical diet.

Back then for music like this to get around because it didn’t get radio play in smaller towns- and still doesn’t get radio play to this day. We metalheads learned about bands through magazines believe it or not and live shows. It was a different world then.

Seeing how much you love these guitar solos I can't wait till you hear Megadeth. Marty Friedman and Dave Mustaine are an incredible duo and songs like Hangar 18, Tornado of Souls and Holy Wars are a feast for the ears, some of the greatest guitar playing ever recorded

I love this song so much it’s one of my all time favourites. They will always be favourite band, I have seen them 30 times live.
This is THE song that ripped me away from the mainstream when I first heard it in 1987, and turned me into a metal head. Thank Ktulu.
If by early you mean first album, this is the song, with Seek and Destroy a close second. Lyrically this album is a bit wild and testosterone fueled.
If by early you include Ride the Lightning, I’d go with the title track, or For Whom the Bell Tolls, or Creeping Death.

Great thoughts and well thought through review. The amount of work Metalica put into their music from the jump -- and soon after their teen years -- was amazing.
To be honest, you should have did a double header on this song. Metallica's Four Horsemen and Megadeth's The Mechanix. Its the same song, different vocals and song speed. Remember, Mustaine used to be in Metallica, and they kept a lot of Daves songs when they kicked him out.
Other Thrash Metal recommendation from me:
1. Megadeth - Tornado of souls (probably the best solo ever written in music ever... can already see your face)
2. Alice in Hell - Annihilator (takes thrash in a more melodic way and also is a bit creepy and so amazing. And if you want, react to the interlude "crystal ann" beforehand. Its very beautiful)
3. Metallica - Creeping death (my favourite song for when i just wanna rock out... maybe not that complex but so damn groovy)
4. Death - Crystal Mountain (this borders death metal but is a very progressive song and sounds extremely sick)
Annihilator is a criminally underrated band.
Agree 100% on the Annihilator recommendation. Only heard a couple of their songs (Kraft Dinner being the other one) but I really liked them both.
A song wrote mostly by Dave Mustain. And the riff in the solo part is actually sweet home Alabama :D

Props for picking a Metallica song from Kill 'Em All. Most channels won't touch that album for some reason. I had Kill 'Em All on cassette and would blast it on the way to school in my first car, a teal green 1991 Camaro lol. T-tops down, and devil horns up! \m/
And when you realise the threw Sweet home Alabama into this song it gets even more intricate.

Amazing track. One of my absolute all-time favourites. Don't confuse it with the newer S&M version though. I think that the nineties original was better.

As a teenager I went from acoustic guitar to electric just to learn every Metallica riff. One of the all time great bands. But please do Radiohead - How To Dissappear Completely next 😉
James(singer) was raised in a very religious home. His mother passed away for refusing treatment b/c of her belief in god. Which in turn devastated him.

Please, PLEASE, do a video on the song 'Good Mourning/Black Friday' by Megadeth. It's basically two songs in one. The first 2 minutes (Good Mourning) might be the coolest guitar playing I've ever heard. Then Black Friday kicks in and melts your face off. 😎

I've never heard this but it may have been said before, that Hit the Lights, the first from this album, was to purposely showcase Kirk and a dig on Mustaine that he was officially replaced by greatness. Kirk isn't that kind of guy for drama or hate but I think James and Lars definitely intended this. My comment isn't a dig on Dave, he's great too, but the replacement was an unforeseen Easter egg for fans because we got two awesome groups out of it.

How about adding Slayer to your catalogue of reactions? Maybe "Tormentor" from their debut also released in 1983? They are the band that at least partially influenced majority of Metal's extreme subgenres.

"Anesthesia Pulling Teeth" needs to make your list as Cliff Burton is a Top 5 bassist of all time. On a side note, without the long hair a 5th of jack and a lefty You were all of us metal heads the 1st time we heard this song.

A cool little note that you might want to pay attention to in future Metallica songs...their riffs sometimes mimic the theme of the songs. For example in this one, the galloping main riff is supposed to be like horses riding, there is even a section where the guitars are doubled up and get out of sync making it sound like a group of galloping horses. Or in "One" the riff towards the end is made to sound like machine gun fire.
Also of note for your music expert - all the riffs are downpicked, not alternate picked. James was said to have the fastest right hand in all of music when he was younger. Most people struggle to play the early riffs with just down picking.

The production on Kill 'Em All is outstanding, especially when compared to other metal albums from the same time period (try listening to Megadeth's version of this song, Mechanix, after listening to The Four Horsemen to see what I mean).
I remember hearing that they blew lots of the money alloted to them by the record company on drugs and this is partly why the weak sound quality. May still be me confusting things or just a rumour though.
@@MotorbreathChannel tbh I think most bands blew lots of their alloted money on drugs back then. Bands probably still do that now, only they do a better job of keeping it secret.

you can listen a version of it with the one who should had be the frontman of the band, John Bush (i listen for Metallica since their beginning but I've never a great fan of Hetfield voice I've to admit). I discovered Bush when he sang in Anthrax, great vocalist (and never bought an Anthrax album without him, actually you should take a ear to the Album "sound of the white noise" (1993 iirc).
An opinion question: your music theory expert gave a score which was factored into the total score. I'm curious how much of the writing credit / style / input you might attribute to Dave Mustaine? The riffs, and therefor the chord progressions are his. Of course, as you said, Metallica added and changed things and clearly the vocals are all James, but the bones of the song and the song writing are Dave's. It might be interesting to compare some earlier Megadeth (not The Mechanix, I don't think) to early Metallica if only to see how the song writing and delivery varied between the two bands, given that the songwriting should have some overlap.
The verses are in E-blues and the chorus is more or less in E-minor. There are also chromatics in the instrumental parts.
I would not say the song is in E-minor as a whole.
The drums and guitar mimick a galloping sound of the horsemen coming.

I was never more disappointed than when I heard that song. It was the beginning of Metallica losing the thrash sound I grew up with. Luckily they figured it out again when Rob joined 🤘🏻
Creeping Death. I understand why you will default to the studio version for your purposes, it is by far their best live song, and you should see that, channel or not. Look for Moscow 1991....first concert since the fall of the Berlin Wall and 1.6 MILLION people came out!

I'd recommend Holy Wars... The Punishment Due it's definitely most recognized megadeaths song and probably good place to start

Both are great songs. But how about 'In My Darkest Hour' written by Dave to address Cliff Burton after he tragically died? I remember Dave talking in one of his interviews that despite him being kicked out of Metallica, he and Cliff stayed friends and Dave had to basically re-invent his own style so avoid being accused of copying Metallica's even though he helped to create it.
I can't see him giving Mustaine more than a 5.0 out of 10 for vocals though. 😂

Since Megadeth is on the radar and my fav band I'll push for their song "Five Magics". Megadeth are a bit more technical than 'tallica.
Metallica had absolutely no knowledge of music theory when writing this album, they didn't use anything like that until the 2nd album after cliff taught the rest about it

Kirk still changed it to have more melody and not mindless shredding. He did both solos.
Reacting to a metal song once and moving on to the next one does not make you a metalhead. OWNING these full albums and cranking up every song repeatedly in your car or home, over and over again, day after day, night after night, year after year, is the true path to metal music appreciation. Otherwise, you will sadly remain a Non-Metalhead, as you are now.
If you want to drive your "experts corner" guy nuts, try some Steely Dan.
Listening to Metal, heavy metal, rock, jazz... This is Metal Royalty. All of Metallicas first 5 albums are. Like some of Iron Maidens, Pantera, Judas Priest and other greats. But non come close to Metallica as a whole, at least for me.

I frequently overlook this album in favor of the 3 that came after it, especially And Justice for All, but hearing this reminds me how good the album really was. Even without Cliff Burton's songwriting on this album, they were still far ahead of a lot of other bands that were around in that time. Master of Puppets was the newest album out when I first heard Metallica and I heard this album after already hearing Master and Ride the Lightning, so that might have lessened my opinion of it a bit. This is definitely one of the better songs on the album. I also really like Jump in the Fire and Whiplash, but they are all more "punch you in the face" and less nuanced than this one. You might also enjoy Seek and Destroy, which is probably the most well-known song on the album.
Dave Mustaine, who wrote this music before he joined Metallica and formed Megadeth, is a friggin' riff master genius! He easily every bit as good as James Hetfield, I feel even a bit better because he throws in a lot of jazz. Plus he plays masterful lead guitar as well! I feel like even though Kurt Hammett did try to play the solos and did a great job, this review as far as the music goes is a nod to Dave Mustaine of Megadeth and he is amazing!

The only Metallica stuff worth reviewing, is their older stuff, everything in the 80s was top-of-the-line, the album black was all right, and everything since then has sucked. That’s why Metallica’s version of this song is so much better, the lyrics are far superior than Dave’s version.

@@revwillyg6450 well, I’d say you’re wrong, I’ve been with Metallica since 1983, and they didn’t make anything after the end justice album that was good as those first ones were. Black was the most disappointing album after those previous ones, and they just got worse from then on out. I do on the Black album because it’s all right but it’s nothing like the first albums.
Not so sure .... whether you really don't know much about Metallica/Megadeth/Slayer/Anthrax or you are just acting to entertain audiences. Anyways... 👍

prolly also the last time Lars played this tune like this too 😆 Still, this & Ride are their best albums hands down for a plethora of reasons. Dnt care about anything after AJFA. Not the 'tallica I was hooked on in the early 80s. Not same spirit or attitude. Really had 2b there I guess. Theyre a shadow of their former selves. Now its all shiny & perfect & REAL heavy metal is grimy & brutal & fun.

Their catalogue is endless so you really could do these album tracks forever lol. However I still have to recommend you check them out live! Really anything from Seattle ‘89 is 10/10. Creeping Death and Blackened would be my favourites though!
