  • A lot of people ask this question - "how do you sharpen a scraper?"
    This is a short video where Ben shows you just how easy it can be. A scraper is a very useful tool, not just for guitar building, but woodwork in general.

    The scraper has become one of my favorite tools. So useful. Sharpening one was like mythical alchemy, but this video demonstrates one of the easiest ways I've seen to go about it. Thanks Ben. ✌️

    Thanks, Ben. I have to try this. I have two scrapers that need to be sharpened.

    I used to be a bit underwhelmed by scrapers and didn't quite understand what all the fuss was about, until the day I managed to sharpen it properly. Now I can't imagine life without a scraper! They are incredible tools!

    My scraper is one of my most used, and cheapest tools…will try this in the morning.

    Best tool ever. I used scrap metal for it. And an egg shaped bottle opener. Simple yet effective.

    I used Stanley knife blades to scrape wood for years not knowing that there was a purpose made alternative. I have just purchased my first set of actual scrapers, now I need one of those steel rods

    Who taught you Ben? This is identical to how I was shown aged 6 by my Grandfather in the 1960's. He used an oilstone that he kept just for this and cleaned the scraper with white spirit before taking it back to his woodwork bench.

      The basic technique was at West Dean College while doing my 2 years learning the building of early stringed musical instruments..

      @@DailyGuitarDraw That makes sense Ben. My Grandad was a keen furniture restorer and learned his technique from a violin repairer just after ww2. I felt completely at home when I was shown this same method at Merton College while learning how to make acoustics.

    Much easier then I thought it would be. How about ones that are rounded?

    That's great, I will try with a levelling beam and 320 paper! I've been using a flat file then sharpening stones but is a bit hit and miss.

    I need a levelling beam in my life. What sandpaper do you use on them - self adhesive?

    Is it better to use a burnisher or would a strop do?

    • @DailyGuitarDraw
      @DailyGuitarDraw  2 роки тому +1

      The burnisher actually helps to harden the edge of the scraper and will help prolong the edge. You can use it as well as a strop. Hope this helps. - TC

    Cool video I was hoping you would discuss doing the same on curved and round scrapers. Is the technique the same?

    • @DailyGuitarDraw
      @DailyGuitarDraw  2 роки тому

      technique is exactly the same, just takes a little more fiddling due to the curves.
