  • Aloe vera leaves are comprised of three parts: the skin, the gel, and the latex. The latex is a thin layer of yellow liquid between the skin and the gel of the leaf which has to be removed by soaking if not it may cause side effects and irritate your skin. This yellow secretion is called aloin (aka aloe latex) and is stored in the aloe leaf pulp. Aloin should not be ingested in large quantity as it is a potent laxative and can also cause skin irritation.

Aloes are not poisonous. I live in The Caribbean where we eat it, swallow it, rub it on our skin, rub it on our hair, etc, and have been doing this for generations. It can help with detoxification, but never poisons anyone. This is the first time I have ever heard of aloes being referred to as poisonous in any form.

There is a little yellow substance between the outer skin area and the inner gel/aloe area that "IS POISONOUS" but to someone who is allergic to Latex. The little yellow substance, Is the part that people would have an allergic reaction to. As per my physicians, as per the fact I have a Latex allergy myself. Until my doctors explained it, I had no idea that aloe Vera plants had a Latex substance in between the layers, but it is a very small thin layer. It's best to make sure the person receiving the Aloe Vera plant or treatment is not allergic to its components.

When u cut it, there will be a dark yellow liquid at the base oozing out. I guess u must have noticed when we just cut it and keep it on the counter or somewhere, there will be dark stains on that surface. So we should cut a little from base to remove it. I don't know whether that liquid is poisonous or not but I am damn sure it's not for us to use and very dangerous. If we apply it on skin, it forms white patches or shows some effects(u can go ahead and test it) also it damages hair when u apply it

tall. Sadly it died when moved from a southern picture window.
I also grew huge Jade Tree. I would have to cut off 2.5 ft of growth periodically so the weight of the branches didn't break the main trunk. I still have it and it's about 25 years old. It takes up most of the picture window.

I've raised Aloe for years! It wants some sand in with the soil. Use a long narrow drawer organizer tray for a planter. drill holes in the bottom. Set the tray in a rectangular ice holder that you've cut the top 2/3's off of. Put a little water in here and set your aloe tray in it. Plant ONE Aloe in the middle. Over a very short time, everywhere you have drilled a water hole, another plant will come up. It's like they are "born pregnant" They spread well. If water isn't available, and there's water elsewhere nearby, the Aloe will pull itself out of the ground and go to it!
It CAN'T BE in direct sunlight. It does have to have sun. It also wants a little bit of water in a bottom tray. Don't soak the ground it's in. It will pull itself out of the ground and go to water!

I have filetted my aloe vera leaves for a long time and put the gel in ice cube boxes too. I always put the leaves I just cut in a jar overnight so that the latex oozes out of the leaves. I remember dabing my thumb in it to test and it was extremely bitter. Not nice at all. But it didn't kill me. So yes better to remove it.
