Do You Need A Size 1 or Size 2? | How to Choose Your Menstrual Cup Size

  • When you look at the guidelines for which size menstrual cup should be right for you they seem rather specific- over 30 and haven't given birth, you're a Size 1. Over 30 and/or you've given birth- you're a Size 2.
    These guidelines aren't just arbitrary, there's a reason the under 30/over 30 number exists but it's not a hard line. Plus the "given birth" line is confusing! Kim will explain WHY this is the guideline and when you should follow it, or when you shouldn't.
    How to pick a menstrual cup size is the first choice you will need to make when you are getting started so use this video to guide you to a better understanding of how.
    I did check my audio set-up and adjust the mic 5 times before filming sooooo I am hoping it's better for everyone.

    So, I recently started using a menstrual cup, and I use the Saalt soft in the size “regular” (as opposed to small). I’m 15, I’m a virgin, I’ve only stuck tampons up there prior to this. The reason why I chose the regular instead of the small is because I have an EXTREMELY high cervix. Like, my fingers are very long and I can hardly touch it. It DID hurt at first to put it in and take it out, but once it was in, it was totally fine! Just wanted to share! ❤️

      Would you recommend it for someone who has a high cervix but can reach it + a heavy flow?

      Cheaminks I would definitely recommend it!! It’s a great cup, and I’ve only leaked once (which was my fault).

      The diva cup would probably be great for you (it’s extremely long). Both size sm and large are 57mm long so you could get one that’s smaller in diameter if you would like but it would reach your cervix as well. In firmness it’s rated at a 3 so pretty good that way also. Just thought I’d comment in case you’d like to try different ones as well :)

    Interestingly enough, I'm 26 years old, never been pregnant, a virgin, and find that I need something bigger. It's kinda like I'm coasting in-between the two sizes, but given my very high cervix and serious blood flow (I know that's not supposed to dictate things, but higher capacity really helps day-to-day life in a third world country), I wound up getting the bigger XO Flo. Not the most comfortable to get accustomed to, but I leak SO much less, feel it less, and am generally more comfortable once it's in. It does open up when inside, usually pretty easily, and... Well, I'm a generally active person. I'm not an athlete, at least not at the moment, but maybe the muscles I'm working day-to-day are unrelated to the pelvic muscles...?
    No idea, just know size 2 seems to be working better than the smaller ones (compact was a nightmare) and I don't want to go back LOL. Though I've not stuck to multiple sizes in one brand for comparison.

    Another factor to take into consideration is the shape of the cup. After much trial and error, I discovered that traditional funnel-shaped cups don't work for my body no matter what size they are because my cervix is tilted towards my tailbone. I need a cup that can reach far enough in the back of my vagina so it doesn't easily miss my cervix. It turns out that fishbowl-shaped cups (like my Merula) are ideal for me.

    This is so true. After I had my third child a soft cup worked because my pelvic floor wasn't as toned. Then I worked hard on strenghtening my pelvic floor...well I had to get a firmer menstrual cup because my muscle were so toned it was causing my cup to collapse which caused leaks. I switched to a firmer cup (Lena) which worked wonders!

      Noor A Absolutely! You would probably benefit from a Merula, a Moon Cup, or a MeLuna Sport. They’re all pretty firm, the Merula is pretty bulbous so that may take a little getting used to for some. I personally have the Moon Cup at the moment and it never gets crushed inside me like many other cups have.

    • @supernova11711
      @supernova11711 4 роки тому

      I’m strange I guess. I’m 38 (average size and weight) and not overly active and use a small si-bell cup. It’s the softest cup you can get and I chose it because I was worried about a firmer cup giving me cramps. So I have no idea what kind of muscle tone I have! I have a cup that’s a 1 in firmness so that would indicate weak muscles but it’s a small which would indicate stronger muscles lol! Who knows! What works just works I guess 😂

    There’s soooo many factors to consider. My brain is scrambled trying to decide on just a brand and size. I’m 31, never had sex or children, I have days with a bit of heavier activities, and my cervix is about halfway (abt 2 inches). I’m going to maybe say too much, but I feel quite small down there even when relaxed. I’m also worried about a cup being too rigid or too soft. Every time I think I have it down another thing pops up. I’m so lost.

    Ha ha it reminded me so much of my first cup picking experience! 😁 Of course I've started doing brands research and came up with the list of options, but soon got super annoyed as I could not get any of my list as a singular item, all of them were in bundles of 2 - size A and size B 🥴 Since I was keen on the brands I've chosen, thought, okey whatever, I'll spend extra cash for something I don't need. Was sooo sure I was a large size (age 35, never gave birth and too lazy to exercise). The bundle became to be the best thing ever as I've could not even insert the larger size! So guys, please learn from my story - all good things come in a pair 😂😂

      Sounds to me like to an improvement might come with one of the more uniquely shaped cups. Bell with inside reinforced rim(less ridgy on the outside), thin flexible but long bucket shaped(high suction and high capacity, or the bulby/ ball shaped with strong and forward leaning rim.
      Sometimes a curvier inside can fail to hold a long or short bullet shaped cup in place.
      But if you prefer that shape, a fun cup or other firm and ergonomic shaped product could improve your experience with leaking.
      Pro tip. Remove excess mucus (safely) before insertion, also dry cup completely.
      Also TPE products are firm AND respond to heat, meaning, it conformes to your shape!

    When I decided to try a menstrual cup, I decided on Saalt. I accidentally bought a large, but decided to try it anyways. I was 18 and a virgin, but it was still SUPER comfortable inside of me. It's a bit short, so I'm going to try the Lily cup next because its longer (me cervix is HIGH).
    Also, side note, the PACII chart says that the Saalt cup is a 4 on the hardness scale, but it was still comfortable and I was surprised to see it was a 4/5. So if someone reading this is super worried about that, it obviously depends on the person, but my sensitive virgin vag was fine!!

      Depending on the brand the differences are practically imperceptible so you're right, but some brands have a larger difference. That's why it's also useful to look at our comparison chart to see the actual diameter because for some brands their size 1 is the same as another brand's size 2. The other video we did about picking cup sizes addresses that more.

I accidentally pushed out my cup once while doing a number 2... 😧 So I tried a larger diameter, but it feels ackward. I went back to wearing pads, it just feels better not having anything in. Maybe I'll give reusable disks a try at some point.

    I really need some help to find a cup with more capacity, I'm using a Yuki, inserting, opening and removing works great, just on the heavier days is overflowing. I'm over 30 but I know I'm fine with the smaller ones since I have no kids and do lots of pilates. My cervix is high most of the time. Wich is your recommendation? Is the super jeanie wider that the models 1 or S. Thanks

    I’m 15 and a virgin. I have quite a low to medium cervix I got the OrganiCup. I got the mini at first because of the low cervix. I leaked in the night because of the flow. So I brought size 1. I now use the mini for light days and size 1 for heavier days.

    I asked on Facebook but here I see that if the cup doesn't open it's probably too big. I started comparing the diameters of the one I have with the ones the quiz recommended and mine is 2 or 3 mm wider (depending on the brand I compare it to). Capacity is the same though lol so many things to consider 🤔

    MeLuna has size xs-xl, 2 lengths, 3 stem options and 3 firmness options. I started with a small LENA and it kept collapsing and hanging out. I figured out my cervix drops very low during my cycle and was pushing it out (it was also painful) and when I exercised it would collapse. I found out MeLuna made a shorter cup so I compared the rim sizes and ended up with a sport shorty ball stem size L (yes the LENA size S is the same as MeLuna L) and it’s my Goldilocks! I’m over 30, very active and have 1 child.

    I have just started using a mensural cup ,(I am 13) I have a high cervix so I thought I would try out a diva cup and got a diva cup size 0. it took me about 20 minutes to even put it in. Before me using a mensural cup I used a tampon so I am pretty comfortable with putting stuff in my body and just my body in general. I am very lucky because both my mom and sister use a mensural cup and convinced me to get into a menstrual cup. It’s gonna be difficult but I want to concur using a mensural cup. Good luck to me.

    • @user-bd3op5qp2t
      @user-bd3op5qp2t 3 роки тому

      Maddy Dickens yeah the 0 fit just fine, I can’t imagine getting a bigger size because it was quite hard to figure out in the first place and I think if it was bigger it wouldn’t have worked for me. I think it is just based on your body type. It helps a lot if you are more comfortable with you body because you really will need to get in there😂 just trust your gut and if you think you need a bigger size then try a bigger size. It’s all just a learning experience so make sure to take your time and to not get frustrated. Good luck!

      Aiva ;D this might be weird but how high is your cervix ? I’m debating between the lily cup and diva cup and for my cervix height I’m not sure which to go with. I understand if you aren’t comfortable sharing. Some people have trouble gripping the diva cup for removal with a high cervix, have you experienced that?

    • @user-bd3op5qp2t
      @user-bd3op5qp2t 3 роки тому

      Maddy Dickens personally I have never had trouble griping the diva cup. But it’s all about finding the way that works with you while putting it in and removal. There are many tricks and different ways to help while putting in your mensural cup and when you are removing it, you just need to find the right way for you. This may be a little nasty but the diva cup is about a finger long so if you finger fits in there😂 then the diva cup should fit just fine(I am a 0 so the 1 or 2 could be bigger). Also don’t be worried about it getting stuck in there or lost because there is no where for it to go.

    I recently decided to switch to a cup and went with the June cup because of price. I got the large because it was recommended for those who gave birth. It doesn't leak or slip and isn't uncomfortable, but I'm feeling it might be too big because it doesn't seem to be opening completely. Also how do I know if it is too long? Where should the tip of the stem be?

Looking for a new cup I think shape might be a problem too rather than bell shape need v shape. Diva cup s1 is pretty firm pushed on bladder and also starts slipping out so thinking I need a softer and bigger cup? I've tried a few cups and none have been the one for me. Super Jennie s1 too soft hard to open, lena cup pushed on bladder too firm, ruby too firm. So confused which one to get.

    Still, the C-section thing doesn't apply to everyone. Some of us needed a C because the cervix didn't dilate.
    Or we had our C before labor progressed because of multiple late decels (baby's heart rate dropping or stopping)

      Yep! This happened to me! However, I chose a size 2 Diva Cup bc I’m 35 and it fits - doesn’t hurt to put in or take out - seals properly and no leaks. I’m considering buying a size 1 though bc I do get a little bit of cramping and I very rarely get period cramps. So I don’t know if it’s period cramps or cramping from the cup being too big 😅 But overall my experience has been wonderful - I didn’t do really any research before buying one and just chose one at my local CVS and it honestly could not have been easier. For the first time in my LIFE my sheets were clean when I woke up!! ❤❤
      Edit to add: thank you for pointing out the C-Section info 😊
