How Haas dragged itself back up the F1 grid for 2022

  • Haas couldn’t have hoped for a more dramatic turnaround of its Formula 1 fortunes under the new regulations in 2022.
After scoring just three points in the previous two campaigns, it has already racked up four times that in first two races thanks to back-to-back top 10 finishes for Kevin Magnussen in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
That’s put it fifth in the constructors’ championship with more points than it has scored in the preceding 49 races. So how did Haas achieve this remarkable reversal of fortunes, and can F1’s smallest team really be expected to sustain this form for the rest of the season?

Most drivers usually at least start out as pay drivers to some extent. This is an insanely expensive sport which blurs the line between rich man's hobby, and professional sport, especially at the mid-level competitions, so most of the people who ever get enough experience to prove themselves have paid a lot (or had it paid for by their family) just to be able to have the chance of being selected to race in F1.
Marketability of the drivers, which attracts sponsorship money, is a very important aspect. When there's lots of different similarly skilled decent drivers to choose from from the F2 circuit, you're going to choose the ones which come with the best sponsorship, or the ones which can just pay you directly out of pocket for the privilege to be there. Out of drivers who can't pay, only the drivers who stand out as being unusually skilled or talented get picked without having to pay for the privilege in some way. Of course, sponsorship money is often attracted by the driver being good, so sponsorship is often partially related to merit, but there is obviously an aspect to attracting sponsorship money which has nothing to do with a driver's ability.
The sport is a business, so aside from team owners who might care more about being competitive than making money, a lot of drivers are chosen based on whether they think it will help them financially. Furthermore, helping your team financially can help to allow it to invest more in development, and to potentially help the team to be more competitive in the long term, so in a weird way, a pay driver can still help your team win more in the future, even if they help it win a little bit less in the short or medium term.
From what I recall, Zhou is not bad. He was a solid F2 driver, with lots of experience. He's worth a lot to F1 as a whole, given that he can potentially help to attract Chinese viewers. He may not be the best driver available for Alfa Romeo, but he's not that bad, and he comes with lots of $$$, which will help Alfa Romeo stay competitive in the long term.

The most important takeaway from HAAS’ resurgance is that the car is stable - previously they had problems with overheating brakes and tires, but now they Seem to be the 4-5 fastest car
I reckon that they wont plumb Down the order because they generally have made a stable car with little to non radical designs
This makes it easier to understand where to improve and change the car if needed

    • @syncmonism
      @syncmonism 2 роки тому +14

I think part of the reason that it wasn't stable was because they were making sacrifices with downforce to be able to have enough straight line speed, because the engine wasn't very good. It's funny, but the slower F1 cars are often also some of the most difficult to drive for this very reason. As bad as Mazepin is, he probably wouldn't have crashed so often in a lot of the other 2021 cars.

Well if it wasn't fast enough - Romain couldn't have driven it through the barrier at Bahrain (did it need to be faster than that?). They weren't really slow at all. It's just the level of competition and tiny fractions of a second add up over the course of the lap/race. K-Mag's got a new lease on his F1 life & Romain is looking mighty fast in his indycar... he believes he can win again and he can. The Schumacher kid project is coming along nicely as well ;o FWIW I would rather have Jan around the place much more than having Dmitry.

A lot of people forget that Haas performance is linked to Ferrari. They have a great engine and PU and suspension. Their aero design is similar to Ferrari, as it is done by Ex Ferrari employees. This is more than Alpha Tauri with RB. You can say this when looking at Alfa Romeo.

Lol what? If anything Magnussen has had bad luck. Hydraulic issues in Bahrain which meant he only got 1 run in Q3, which pretty much meant he had to drive a little safer so he couldn’t challenge Bottas and Hamilton for P4 in quali.
Then in Saudi Arabia he gets to a track he’s never raced on or heck even driven in a simulator and gets pretty much no practice because of more car issues. Combine that with a neck that’s absolutely destroyed at this point because he hasn’t trained it for F1. That’s what I call bad luck.
Pretty much all issues Schumacher has had have been self inflicted. A terrible qualifying in Bahrain where he was 0.5 seconds off his teammate and then a crash in Saudi Arabia which has also solely his own fault. So I’m not exactly sure what you mean by Schumacher being unlucky

The truth is, they had £1 in earnings at the time of sponsoring when they first filed for Companies House in the UK yet the owner was claiming he was about to pump £35m into the team. When he realised he couldn’t commit to his own financial agreements, Haas realised they were being played at the risk of losing R&D costs. I wouldn’t say Haas were “forced” to pull Uralkali either. Dimitri’s son was about to get banned from international sporting regulations in certain countries. Dimitri had close ties with the Kremlin. Haas had a choice, but they weren’t forced. It would’ve finished them as an F1 team had they kept Uralkali as the financing would be sanctioned going into 2023.They had little choice in both situations, but again, they didn’t need to oblige to anyone - they already had their 2022 funding paid for by investment, and they won’t have to pay it back. But not only that, Uralkali paid UPFRONT for 2022! They’ve got all the money, and due to the sanctions, they aren’t actually allowed to refund Mazepin Senior. So at this moment in time, they’re happily sitting with all the money. Mazepin is attempting to sue in order to be refunded, but this will take months or years.

Ferrari should let Haas have the Maserati sponsorship. They let Sauber have the Alfa Romeo branding and that was a big benefit to them. There were rumors of Haas potentially getting the Maserati sponsorship a couple years ago, but those plans fell through. Now with Haas proving themselves a capable midfield team, it seems like the right time to give them a big-name sponsorship to cement their financial security moving forward.

This. While I'm not going to say that Kevin is trash, no one in this day and age gets to F1 without being at least top 10% of racers in the world, most of this has been helped by the engine being spot on while other midfield competitors like Alfa Tauri are struggling to finish while the Merc customer teams have all badly missed the ball, not to mention RB unable to finish in race 1 and Lewis botching it and getting botched in Race 2. Once everyone else finds their footing in development and being able to last towards race end, they'll migrate back to 7th or 8th best by seasons end, ahead of Williams and McLel but only due to power.

Best way to keep the momentum now is Not to be too successfull in 22. They sure will show off what progess they have made, but if they end the season somewehre at the end of the field again they can use more wind tunnel time again. The car is good enough to make some good screen time, and that is more important for sponsors than actual points sometimes. And of course the cost cap helps.
By that I am not suggesting that they will do such a thing on purpose, but that would be a very beneficial scenario for the long term.

Speed traps and lap times are usually a good comparison point for how fast are the cars relative to each other. But that's not always the whole story. Last year for example, Alpha Tauri had a clearly faster car than Alpine, yet Tsunoda was rarely there to help Gasly fight off against Alonso and Ocon and as a result Alpine managed to get more points as its two drivers were more consistent than Alpha Tauri's.

  • @findbinnu

What went unnoticed by most observers is Haas's mini sector times in Bahrain Q3 - I saw a lot of purples there, but KMag (understandably perhaps) and Mick never put together the sort of great laps the top drivers are capable of. Which is what makes me think that in the hands of a truly World class driver, that car could fight at least for 3rd spot. Hope KMag gets F1 fit soon and better reliability, understanding and upgrades takes Haas to the front.

  • @FallingPicturesProductions

Compared to the other major backmarker teams of 2021, Williams and Alfa Romeo, HAAS went harder on preparing for the '22 regs then either of them, and has a driver lineup roughly on par with Alfa Romeo and far better then Williams, not to mention that Williams is partially crippled by a weaker-then-normal Mercedes powerplant. That coupled with McLel regressing right back down to their 2015-2017 levels strongly suggest that while HAAS might gradually slip backwards as the season goes on (Alpha Tauri will inevitably move back forwards and fix their reliability) they may have invested enough at the right time to not run the risk of slipping right back to dead last on the grid this year. Though I do think that it's inevitable that they end up trading paint with Williams for P16 at best in the upcoming years. Ferrari may have shot well with aero regulations, but Dallara is usually a bit slower on the uptake with changes and upgrades to aerodynamic regulations both as a HAAS support and in their support for open wheel racing in the US (indycar) and the Euro developmental ladder.
