Today I wanted to talk about venus flytrap flower stalk cutting. This is probably the main question I see with new growers. Almost everyone seem to be confused about the flower stalks. Some people even think that allowing a flower stalk to grow in all instances will kill a venus flytrap, which is just not true.
Today we will talk whether or not you should cut a venus flytrap flower stalk. Also, some ideas on what to do with your flower stalk after you do cut it. Did you know you can clone your venus flytrap with flower stalk propagation? It's also true that when venus flytraps are grown from seeds you may not get a clone of the plant. If your venus flytrap is a cultivar, your seed grown plants may just be typicals.

This is my third summer with my flytrap. I let it flower last summer and this summer and didn’t remove the stalks. I let them die off naturally. Mine is a 100% outdoor plant and has grown rapidly each summer after dying off each winter.
Thats amazing! Thats how you know you are giving your flytrap the best care! It's really nice to be able to just leave them and not worry about it! I will say though, propagating them is a lot of fun!
You let them die? Why don't you try over wintering them instead of letting them die?
@danielramirez-me6pn he means he leaves them outside over the winter, and they go dormant, if you don't let them go through that, they could die a lot sooner.
I'm new to VFT but I believe in letting nature do it's thing. I have one 6 year old VFT that has flowered and given me so much joy just watching it's normal unaltered life ...
For the most part Susan, I completely agree. I'd rather not cut the flowers. But they do work great for propagation and there are some instances where the flytrap will be better off cutting the flower. If you have healthy flytraps and you just enjoy watching it grow, leaving the flower is probably best!
How are you new but have a 6 year old VFT at the same time. The math ain’t mathing
@@アルセウス-l7x Probably sitting the plant for someone?
Thank you for your help!
There is a short video about this plant! Please support us by watching! Thank you very much!
What's up old friend. I actually have two plants that I am allowing to grow flowers. One is a typical VFT and the other is a Red Dragon VFT. I was going to cut the Red Dragon too, but as I was about to cut the flower stock, I noticed that the flower stem is growing a second flower from the same stem. Looks pretty cool.
Ahhh yes, this is called False Vivipary. I've never had it but have seen it. It's a super cool phenomenon!
Mine just started flowering for the first time. I think I’m going to keep it for this time at least as I have never seen one before. Next time, I will probably cut it
The flowers are really cool. A lot of fun to watch grow. They do cross pollinate, so maybe even some seeds!
When they grow in the wild no one cuts the flowers off...just nature..😃
Nice video
This is true. I have no problem with anyone leaving them to flower! However, sometimes the plant flowers knowing it's going to die. It diverts all its attention to it's last attempt to further life by flowering and seeding. If your plant is in this mode, it's best to cut the flower if you are trying to save it. But I completely understand what you are saying, sometimes you just have to let them do what they do!
I work at a nursery and after cutting off the flytrap flower stalks, one of them actually has a new, fully formed, rosette of leaves/traps that has grown out of the top of the cut stalk. Have you ever seen this before? I took pics cause I thought it was crazy haha
I've seen one other person with that deformity one time. That's so cool, I really wish one of mine would do that!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub there’s actually a couple of them doing it now, I wonder if they are all clones and it’s a genetic thing?
Ya. It's super cool. I think deformities are awesome. I'm no biologist though, not sure if it's a genetic thing. Seems like it would be though.
Just subscribed! Thx for the video! Very helpful! I’ve had my VFT since October and it’s just now flowering. I heard about cutting the flower but I couldn’t get myself to cut it, I was too curious to see what it would do. I’ve been posting about it on my TikTok and someone told me it will die after flowering. Your video gives me hope that it will carry on. 🥰 BTW, I name my fave plants and his name is Pennywise. 💀
Pennywise should be fine! As long as it's healthy, it should carry in fine. It's a common misconception that flowering will result in death. Venus flytraps that are in bad shape will put out flowers right before dying to try and continue their line with seeds. But healthy ones flower regularly too.

It would be helpful to know how to properly take your venues fly trap out of dormancy after being dormant. Lot of people talk about how to put the plants in dormancy, but not many people talk about how to take the plants out of dormancy.
Aaron, I actually have that down on my list of videos. I was going to make it when I officially put my plants back outside in the sun. It's a tricky concept because it's so different for everyone
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub simply having the information would give me an other people in my position that want this information an idea on potential ways we can approach this appropriately, at this point it’s just guessing and taking experiences from other plants in our collections to learn, I believe my plant has successfully gone in dormancy and came out because I treated the process like acclamation and gradually moved it from its original place it was staying for dormancy and for a few hours each week increasing the amount of time it experiences less cold temperatures and more time under grow lights, I also monitored the plant, making sure there was no stress from too much light so that way it was adjusted to the light before I put it under for 12+ hours each day
Good info. So far I have snipped every flower off. That is very interesting to know you may just get a typical from the seeds and that you can grow a cultivar from the stalk itself. I only have a few typicals and one dente. If I can keep them through the winter I want a king henery. How's the ceph doing? Mine is being a little fineikey. Had 3 pitchers die back but that was expected. The growth point looks good.
I've also lost a couple of pitchers. Just dried up and died. The majority of it still looks healthy though. It's so small it's hard to tell sometimes if its healthy or not. Hoping it grows!

You,Sir, just got yourself a new subscriber.
Thank you Phil, that means a lot to me! Welcome!
Great video. I got to ask, are you going to do a leaf pulling guide soon? You're getting great results with the flower stalks, I think you're ready to to double up your output!
Yes! Definitely, it's on my list of things to do for sure. I want to get some seedlings going and some leaf cuttings propagating! So much to do, so little time. If I could either figure out how not to sleep or if someone could make days last about 8 hours longer, thatd be great! Lol. I love doing this stuff so much. But I have a 13 year old who is very active in sports, a 15 year old in the middle of drivers education and a 7 year old who just loves hanging with me. I'm not complaining, just wish there was more time!!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Put out videos whenever you like, and don't burn yourself out. Maybe your 7 year old can be in your videos!
Thank you! I didn't mean for that last comment to come off as snobby. If it did John, I apologize. I really love doing this. I enjoy the processing of making and editing the videos, I love my carnivorous plants, and I love my kids. I really appreciate my community so much, I just want to be transparent. I want nothing more than to start a nursery but it's going to be a process for sure. As the kids get older this will all get a bit easier and time will free up. I think getting my little guy involved with videos is a great idea! I'm going to start brainstorming a good way to get him involved! Great suggestion!
If I’m trying to propagate a plant from a flower stalk, would it help to apply a rooting hormone (such as the ones sold at garden stores)?
Thank you for this. So many people said not to let them grow. I would love to see a stalk on mine.
Of course! If you have a healthy plant, no reason to cut those flower stalks! Let them grow!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Thanks for your reply. One question. Is there such a thing as a blue VFT?
No! Absolutely not! I was just looking at those and considering doing a psa video about avoiding those. They are fake. The photos are just photoshopped.. Do not buy them.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Please do one. I was going to purchase some from Amazon and most of the bad reviews explained why they were fake. Yesterday for the first time, I saw purple ones 😁😁
Hi, nice video as always. A week or two ago I asked you if I could use moss I found in my garden to repot cps. Im experimenting about it with a drosera capensis and it seems to be good for now. Though you might want to know. Ty for the vid

Can I try to root the stalk after the flower has bloomed?
Hey! Thanks for all your great info.. I live in Iowa, where the winter weather is below -0 to -25. What can I do for my flytrap if it's too cold??? I dont have a garage, but have a shed... Please help me with this problem! Thanks 😊
It will be necessary to insulate and overwinter them. At those temps, they don't need any light. Just do your best to keep them above 32 degrees F. They can go below freezing for a few days at a time but shouldn't be kept that low for extended periods of time.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub ok, thanks 😊 for your time and help
I am working on a year with my current VFT and it's thrown flower stalks at the appropriate time. I would like to take a crack at some seeds, but I am not familiar with what the seed pod or however the seeds form looks like on a VFT. Have you done a video showing seed collection or do I need to go digging for a reference to know if my plant produces seeds??
Un led de bombillo de 2700 lúmenes a trampas para mosxas??
Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Greece
Welcome from Greece, so happy you checked out the video!
You're going to want to scale that production up. Move to seed trays at least and figure out that tech. Also, I'd try to figure out the inflection point with how small you can cut the flower stalk pieces vs strike rating. This approach should also be viable for leaf pullings as well.
Btw, how often do you change out the water for your cuttings?
Definitely, seed growing is one of my next challenges. I've also wondered how small you could cut. Maybe next time I do a cutting I'll go half inch, just to test it and see if I can get more hits with more stalk cuttings.
Thank you so much for this video!!
Thank you Jason!
Im new to growing plants, I have killed off almost every single one- even the supposed easy ones… butttt I got a Venus fly trap from the grocery store, Iv had it for several months and it sits outside on my patio and seems to be good… I left it out for the entire Florida “winter” and I see it’s started to attempt to seed. I’m worried because I don’t want to kill the plant but I hear it’s also hard to successfully get new plants unless you are an experienced grower… I realllyyy don’t want it to die and need some advice 😢 it hasn’t flowered yet but I think its going to soon!
Am I supposed to repot it!? I’m also worried about that too because last time I repotted a plant in the “proper” material it grew mold somehow 😭
You can repot it, but it just depends on how overgrown the existing one is. I wouldn't go more than 2 years without a repot. I'd cut off the stalks to give your plant the best chance at growing. I have a video all about propagating new plants from flower stalks. It's really not too hard!
ua-cam.com/video/zZbA0S3QpD4/v-deo.html
thanks, this helped me a lot.
Of course, glad I could help!
Hi, I've just read about this and realised that that big stem was the flowers. I have 2 plants, one has a lot of leaves (although they're very green because rn there haven't been many insects in my house during the last months), with a stem around 6 cm long. I have another plant which tbh is not doing as well, it has some leaves growing but not many leaves already grown, with some turning black; but the flower stem is already 12 cm long, so idk if the damage is already done and it's not going to matter if i cut it or not. What should I do? Thanks
If the flower hasn't bloomed yet, you can definitely still cut it. Blooming is when it takes the most energy. Also, watch this before discarding thr flower stalk. ua-cam.com/video/zZbA0S3QpD4/v-deo.html
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Great, thanks!! ❤️
Thankyou so much for this information. May I ask, will waiting for the seeds give me a higher chance of reproduction? Also, I have a plant light shining on him; will that keep him warm enough to produce seeds? Thanks again.
You can wait for it to produce seeds but you need the flowers to pollinate. You can do that with a paint brush. Or, you could cut the flower stalks before they bloom and propagate. As for the light, I'd need to know what kind. I would recommend a sansi 36 watt bulb or a Yescom 225 panel for affordable indoor lighting.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Thankyou so much
My fly trap has a small stock starting. When should I cut it?
If your plant isn't doing great, the sooner the better. If your plant is healthy, you can let it grow a few inches before cutting, so you can propagate it.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Thank you very much
If my plant has started to produce a flower now, what should I do because winter is coming? I wanted to wait and cut the flower and try to propagate it. Is that a wise decision? Will it be able to grow through the winter?
I got new traps growing out of the flower stem by the flower - is that normal??
It's not normal but happens fr3om time to time. I've never been lucky enough to have it happen to me, probably because I usually clipe off flower stalks. It's called False Vivipary.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub much appreciated. I could not find out the right terms to search for it. It happened to my venus fly tray and it is really nuts. So cool. I think it might have something to do with exposure to light during the night time while the plant is flowering. Or it might be a way for the plant to get more nitrogen up to the buds in an efficient manner. Thanks for sharing!
I have an important question so I cut the flower stock really early like as soon as it popped up and now there are red buttons appearing right below and besides the flower stock. It wouldn't concern me but I've been having my plants be outside its really dry out so I have a pebble tray that helps with humidity but the only reason why I'm worried is because it's not producing new traps leaves . In my pot there are 2 plants it's a small plant I got from Walmart but I've been taking really good care of it the traps are an inch long
Also it's starting to turn red witch is awesome I've been giving it alot of sunlight
I'm not sure what you mean by red buttons?
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I don't know how to explain it its really wierd it's like little red buds at rhe very base its really wierd
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I was thinking it could be a new flower stalk teying to grow but I don't know but it's red near the base of the crown
so If I let my flytrap bloom and after bloom can I cut it off or it will hurt the plant?
If the flower is more than a couple inches long, it's already sucking the life out of the plant. A healthy venus flytrap will be fine, but one that is having problems growing needs to be cut when it's no bigger than an inch tall. Once they have bloomed, you might as well leave them as they have already exhausted most of the energy they needed.
Do you recommend soaking the seeds before sowing ?
I don't think so, I've never done that and have always had success sowing.
Gonna get any new flytrap varieties? There are a lot of different cultivars of them.
Definitely! Right now I only have B52, UK Sawtooth and DCXL. I'll definitely be getting more!
I never let them flower , I want to making more traps not flowers Especially since they're growing indoors where no bees will be pollinating them
I usually don't either for the very same reason!
my vft has a group of large traps some medium traps and a few small traps is my vft 3 seprate vft's?
Sure could be! You can usually tell if you look down toward the rhizome. Usually the smaller ones will be coming out of the side or at a different growth point. Always exciting when a new baby pops up!!
It's a beautiful flower
They do produce beautiful flowers!
This question isn't related, but I thought you would find it more easily. My flytrap got knocked over and almost all its leaves got torn off. It's rhizome is unharmed and is big. How long do you think it will take to grow back? On your channel, it says it would take a few years to grow to the size of a mature plant, but I'm guessing you are referring to a flytrap that was from seed and has a tiny rhizome.
As long as the Rhizome is still white and intact it should take off where it left off. It might take a bit due to the shock of the fall but when the traps start growing again they should be close to the same size. Are all traps gone? At first, if all are gone they might be a bit smaller since you have nothing photo synthesizing. It might make 3 or 4 smaller traps to start absorbing the sun. Then after that it should go back to where it was. You definitely dont have to wait the 3 to 4 years of a new plant. Keep me updated on its progress, I'd like to hear how it goes. And I'm sorry for the accident, that's a bummer.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub It happened about a month or so ago, and it grew a couple leaves. I just came here for confirmation. There were about 4 tiny nubs of growth intact. www.flytrapcare.com/phpBB3/post382044.html#p382044
That's awesome! Looks like it's doing great!! Good work!
Once a plant flowers will it stay flowering forever, or will it go back to focusing on growth again at some point?
It depends. If it's flowering because it's dying then it probably will flower then eventually die. However, they don't always just flower because they are dying. Most flower a couple times a year then go back to normal. If your plant is super healthy, there is no reason you can't let it flower then let it get back to growing like normal.
Thank you very much sir! It's healthy so it should be fine to flower. Thanks again.
Definitely! Always keep in mind though, the traps might get bigger and grow more if you snip it.
Do stacks, seeds, leaf cuttings need full sun?
Usually yes, I typically grow my seeds and propagations under a grow light because I can control the conditions. I'd probably shoot for at least 10 hours of sun a day. The seedlings and propagations may have a hard time if it really heats up, like over 95 degrees. which is why I like growing under lights. The only problem is, once you are ready to put them out, you need to acclimate them to the sun slowly, or they will just scorch. If you raise them successfully in the sun, they are already acclimated and just take off!

Thank you for the info
Of course! Thank you for watching!
I'm just wondering how a flytrap looks like during dormancy, is the traps and leaves completely turns black
Some of them do, but not all of them. It also kind of depends on how cold your dormancy is. The colder it gets the more likely some traps die off and turn black. If doing it correctly though, many of the traps will stay green but fade and look wilted. It kind of just looks like an unhealthy venus flytrap. It really doesn't look dead though.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub So, I think shouldn't cut off the black traps in case they are just in the dormancy phase, I hope mine can turns back to greeen
A black trap will not turn green again. Once it's black, it's dead. During dormancy, it's good to trim the dead traps because they can be a source of mold and mildew. I try to keep them pretty clean during dormancy. You don't have to worry about cutting off anything alive, if it's black, it's dead.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Yea, should do that tomorrow, it's a tiny pot now and I give them light sun whenever I could
My stalk produced more traps all over it. Leaving it alone for now
I've seen this before! Definitely don't cut it if it has traps on it. Thats pretty rare!
Ah random question here, but have you ever had a well, I don't know what to call it, but a slight mutation with Venus Flytraps? I don't think that's the right word sorry, but one of my Venus Flytraps, Vinny has a really crazy thing going on. It's growing two traps on a single leaf and one trap is split! It still seems to be growing just fine, but I've never seen anyone else have that happen except for one video showing another double trap. What do you think?
I think that's super lucky! I've had one flytrap sprint 2 heads in one leaf many years ago. But not recently. Mutations make these plants even cooler. Take lots of photos and document. I'm actually a little jealous. Lol. Let me know if that plant keeps sprouting mutations. If it does, I'd do some cloning with flower stalks. Just to keep it going!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Oh okay, this whole time I thought it was cool too, but was wondering if I should've been worried, but I guess not anymore. I've been taking pictures for sure and uploading videos of it on my YT for updates on its look.
Right on, I just checked it out, plant looks healthy! I'm sure if you stop feeding it radiation, it will stop growing two heads! Subbed to your channel!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Awesome!! Thank you!
Should I use the water tray method or water it from the top ?
I recommend putting about an inch of water in the tray. Let the plant absorb the water. Dont refill the tray until the plant is close to being dry. Depending on the heat, you may need to do this often. I dont recommend keeping the tray of water full at all times. Thus can expose your plant to root rot. Dont let it dry out completely but it should be soaking wet either. If the plant doesnt absorb the water after 2 days, it's full and doesnt need it. I'll remove it from the tray until it dries out a bit.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub thanks I'm new to growing them this helps alot.
Of course, my pleasure! Watering them can be tricky. It all just depends on how hot it gets, how much sun they are in. Once you hit a rhythm though, it becomes much easier! You got this!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Also quick question I was wondering if I should repot my flytrap or not is there anyway I can send you a picture?
Are you on instagram? If so, you can add me there and shoot me a message. Its Carnivorous plants hub on instagram too.
I have stalks but no traps
I would probably cut the stalks then. Unless maybe it's just coming out of dormancy? If the plant is struggling, I suggest cutting the stalks.
Thank you for your advice
Have you thought about Patreon?
Someone else mentioned it but I'm not super familiar with the system. It's a subscription right? Like, Patreon subs get something extra? I've thought a little about what I would be able to do. Any ideas? I'm wide open, especially if you are a bit more familiar with it!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub That's true. As for getting something extra maybe try seeds? For subscribers that are plant growers that's awesome, and non-plant growers they can always give the seeds away or sell it. For big subscribers maybe get a clone of one of your plants, since you're planning on opening your own nursery some nursery will gift they big buyers extra plants. And since they are big patreon donators it could also cover the phytosanitary certificate, shipping and handling and custom fee if applicable.
That's really interesting. Definitely something for me to think about. Seeds do seem like a good idea! Problem right now is that I just don't have the stock to keep up. Once I get more plants propagating and growing from seeds, that might be something I can start to handle. In the mean time, I'm going to do some brainstorming. Thank you for the suggestion, I really appreciate it!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Lol it would also be a good method of making more space if you have too many clones. :p
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub Of course, hope you can find your answer. :)
