This cemented Michael Bolton as one of the greatest artists of all time because he showed he had a great sense of humour. Artists become so much more human and endearing when they poke fun at themselves or go outside the "norm" of what you expect from them.
Pretty sure The Lonely Island wrote the whole thing, and ask for him for the interpretation. So his main merit was to recognize a good concept and to fully commit. I'm saying this without any animosity as I got what you meant.

But it took 5 Hours of recording ( Bolton on Studio , The Lonely Island on Skype) before that Sexy Hook was born.
