I am making a visual novel right now where the characters use this kind of phone (the novel takes place in the 80s). I've got a good 3d model of the phone but had no idea how it used to operate, and your video really helped, thanks.
Rainbow_Dash_7x Yes, I’m using an antenna on the CMD80. It wouldn’t work at all with out one. I have since gotten a Motorola America Series 900 (identical to the 8000S) and it too doesn’t register with the CMD80! Don’t know what’s up, but I really don’t think both of the phones are broken.
Wow, what a great video! Fascinating seeing this in full action. What an interesting device the Tektronix CMD 80 is :o very cool to hear the actual ringing of the phone.
My granddad was the first one to buy it but I googled it and it said they don't know who was the first person to buy it well it was Radoslav gorol It was in Chicago rip grandad 30.11.1930 7.5.2006
Very awesome! I love studying and collecting vintage computer and phone technology as well. I thought the initial cellular phone network was 1G, but thanks for enlightening me that it was AMPS. When did 1G come out? Was it for phones with early data software, like RAZRS and qwerty keyboard phones?
What year was the first AT&T Motorola Ultra Classic Brick phone sold? I think I have 2-3 phones, bags, belt pouch, see through cover, batteries and chargers
cjrd28051994 they did but it's just an Android phone inside a plastic box to look like a dynatac maybe there is a few dumb phone versions but they are nothing like the original dynatac.
How to basic Not what they are talking about; they are talking about a pocket-sized AMPS emulator that could be used with an old phone like this and connect to modern cell towers to place calls. Not sure if something like that would be possible, but it would be cool as hell!
Do they still sell these phones? I havent seen a flip phone or cell phone that isnt a smartphone since 2013. Honestly, i have never seen a brick phone in real life even.
Milael Nyquist you'd have to dule it all with AT&T who says their Network is the best and most widespread. Baby if you charged $7.50 for unlimited local and $15 for Nationwide you can be the top shark. Problem is AT&T trick people with Trac fone. People who want minimalistic cell phone to think they are saving money. Having a $20 plan on an Android phone for once in a blue moon calls. However it's only to get them into UA-cam and Android games at outrageous data rates. Your best strategy is to put built-in fidget spinners another gimmicks on your next-gen 1st Gen cell phones.
Did all the DynaTAC 8000 series have backlit keys? Do you know the exact year and model when your phone was produced? See: www.retrowow.co.uk/retro_collectibles/80s/motorola_8000X.php Does the battery say what its capacity is?
There’s some errors in that article. First, the DynaTAC 8000x was ONLY made in beige with a black front. If it doesn’t have those colors, it’s NOT an 8000X. Period. It also doesn’t mean for sure it’s an 8000X if it has those colors, as there was the 8500XL that looked identical, just with the newer, bigger LED display. Also, there are many 8000Ms (like the one in the video) that don’t have an all-caps font on the function buttons.
Milael Nyquist the CMD 80 only emulates older cell tower service that isn't used today. Even when you try to use an old phone like this, any call you place will be redirected to the machine.
How much are these brick phones worth now? Iphones were like below a thousand dollars when I first saw them in 2009. I got my first iphone in 2011 though.
10mintwo how are you going to use an LTE GSM voice service on first generation SIM card when the minimal compatibility is 2.5 g Edge data. Also all LTE SIM cards only work on Android or iPhone. There might be a few phone companies in Japan that allow enhanced LTE voice service on a dumb phone but an American phone carriers never going to allow this otherwise you can get a $7 local only calling plan on a basic phone and then slipped at SIM card into a smartphone and not pay 35-65 dollars
@Stephen SwordBet you're feeling real smart for correcting my sarcastic comment. Obviously it can't run Pokémon Go, the game didn't even exist when this phone was first manufactured.
nice you still use it again walmart do all phone's like 80s it's still the same frequencies they just make the service better if you don't pay your bill it be off those phone run on 2g services walmart look inside what service providers by see how it works for you phone wireless help you out they took 1g in to 2g network services I no about cell phone
I had a friend who still used one of those until about the year 2000.
I referred to it as a field phone.
Lol that's pretty awesome. When was the last year when you could actually make a call with one of these? Sometime in the early 2000's?
@@revokdaryl1Verizon shut down analog in 2008

Very Cool,
In the 80's,
I used to repair these phones,
UK used the TACS system..
I've got a DynaTAC 8000S that won't register with my Tektronix CMD 80 at all. It just keeps flashing NoSvc. Any ideas?
do you have it set to analog and amps. if so try namps and also you may need an antenna on the cmd 80.

No one cares about the UK
Really loved seeing those phones in action. Thanks so much for these videos!!!
The early UA-cam "stabilization" feature makes all those flashing controls unreadable...
Wow, what a great video!

My mother had one And she gave it to me for Display love from Jamaica 🇯🇲
it would be nice if you could hook the cmd 80 up to a gsm/cdma network and put in a sim card and have it use the dynatac as an actual phone
best vintage phone
They remind you so much of the cordless land line phones
How far we've come. Thanks for the video.
Very awesome! I love studying and collecting vintage computer and phone technology as well.

That good test equipment !!!, serves to prove AMPS to CDMA ? . Greetings from Cordoba, Argentina
ive wanted a real one for so long. i cant find them though.
would be awesome if they created a similar thing to keep in your pocket that made the phone work again with new architecture, with a Sim inside maybe
cjrd28051994 they did but it's just an Android phone inside a plastic box to look like a dynatac maybe there is a few dumb phone versions but they are nothing like the original dynatac.

Sweet gear

Even today's cordless phones are more functional than this yesterday's brick phone. ❤️👍😎
Ay anyone know who to charger I don't have a charger for it is there any replacements for it?
Can you hookup analog service with the unit
Tamra Ridley Do you know how you say the name of this phone?
very cool, thanks
Interesting video! Thanks for your efforts!
What kind of antenna does the test unit use? I might be getting a unit soon
how did this work in real life? where were these AMPS centrals located? did you have to be near them to make a call?
How dose it collect, store, and transmit data
Is this legal?
Not like anyone uses those waves eh
what is the antenna on the CMD 80 and where would i get it?
Can you convert a gsm signal from a modern phone over to amps?
2022 check
awesome video!! you should make more like this
We need a device to use this as a cordless landline
can anyone steer me to how to unlock this phone. I recently purchased at a sale and its locked upon powering up.
FCN 0000000 RCL will show the unlock code. Then enter the unlock code.
Hello! I live in Germany I bought Motorola Dynatac 8000 at Ebay Canada, how can I use it in Germany?
I have no idea! if you can help me.
You can’t, unfortunately. It’s analog, which has long since been shut-down. Still a fun phone to tinker with though. :)
Do they still sell these phones? I havent seen a flip phone or cell phone that isnt a smartphone since 2013. Honestly, i have never seen a brick phone in real life even.
If you dial 867 5309 will it play Tommy Tutone's 8675309 jenny song? (Joking)
Can you still activate the Motorola brick phones?
No, the service they ran on (AMPS) was shut down in the US in 2008, and everywhere else by 2010.
hi there, i would like to know the material used on this device. i'll be hoping for your reply regarding this device.
thank you
Muhammad Danial hi
If I was able to build a high frequency analog tower can that emit all over America with the cmd 80?
If you did that i would be so surprised to see my car phone and microtac get a signal. (i would probably dial a random number)
Milael Nyquist you'd have to dule it all with AT&T who says their Network is the best and most widespread. You probably going to be fined for violating frequency allocation regulations.
So how do I unlock the damn thing.
FCN 0000000 RCL will show the unlock code. Then enter the unlock code.

The CMD 80 can you use it for permanent cell service?
Milael Nyquist the CMD 80 only emulates older cell tower service that isn't used today. Even when you try to use an old phone like this, any call you place will be redirected to the machine.
THANK YOU!
Does the Tektronix have any audio in/ouputs that can be patched to a landline?
Did you know this was the 1st cell phone ever
And I thought IPhones were expensive!
The Motorola DynaTAC 8000x was the first one. The one in this video is an 8000M.
How much are these brick phones worth now? Iphones were like below a thousand dollars when I first saw them in 2009. I got my first iphone in 2011 though.
Cool!!!
Cool
whats the ring sound like?

Where is the SIM card slot?
Analog there is no SIM. They had an ID number in the phone that in some phones you could change. Theft of service was common at the time
If you cut the "uhs" from future videos you could probably reduce the length by 2/3ds without removing any actual information content.

For example can you call i guy with an iphone 5s with this thing.
But can it run Pokémon Go?
yes
TomBom292 yes and really fast. it also runs Temple Run and Plants vs Zombies.
@Stephen SwordBet you're feeling real smart for correcting my sarcastic comment. Obviously it can't run Pokémon Go, the game didn't even exist when this phone was first manufactured.
@Stephen Sword you talk shit on the internet, and you'll get shit back.
