I came looking for such a video after watching today's episode of the World War II channel in which Indy Neidell mentioned the track gauges being different in Russia from the rest of Europe. I experienced this spring 1989 on a train from Kiev to Warsaw. This was all done while we stayed on the train and I want to say it took about an hour. It helped that a train next to ours was going through the same thing so we could see a lot of what was going on. Of course that was during the communist time so nobody dared to photograph or video anything. Nice to see you are able to nowadays, thank you for posting.

And considering that the average passenger train in these countries is about 20 cars, this is quite a nice performance !

The Jacks raising the entire Train are not hydraulic, they are acme thread screws turning in a nut fixed in the anvil, easier to syncronise and safer

I trained from Krakow to Lviv 10 years ago. We were at the Przemysl station (outside) for maybe an hour while they did passports and gauge change things. I couldn't see anything that was going on. But I don't remember being lifted. Do they do this a different way in other places or do I just not remember that part?

Do they disassemble the entire train, change the bogies on every car one by one and then reassemble the train? That must take a lot of time!

If the coaches have the same C-Akv couplers as a DB baureihe 189 then the crew will simply need to unhook the pain to pull out the chain. When coupling to a Russian 2ES5K or 3ES5K which are actually the strongest Russian locomotives Belarusian Alstom Prima locomotives due to them having enough power to pull these carriages combined with a double decker sleeper carriage the crew can simply push their SA-3 couplers on to the C-Akv couplers on the carriages themselves

I only see 2 rails on the left track, so how does that functionate with 2 different gauges?

    • @tillklingenhager2612

      Hi,
The tracks in the gauge change hall have a "compromise gauge" just inbetween the 1435 mm normal gauge and the 1520 mm Russian gauge. See also the explanation text at 1:12 in the video.

@@tillklingenhager2612 Hi Till! Thanks for your quick reaction. But how can a 1520mm train roll over a narrower track while you have wheels with flanges?

    • @tillklingenhager2612
      @tillklingenhager2612  4 роки тому +12

      Hello again,
The flanges at the inside of railway wheels are normally nowhere near to touching the side of the rails (other than possibly at bad rail alignment or in very narrow curves). Instead, the surface of mainline railway wheels rolling on the tracks has a slightly conical shape, creating a self-centering effect. The picture
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Train_wheel#/media/File:TreinTramwielprofiel.svg
      in the Wikipedia article
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Train_wheel
about train wheels shows this exaggerated for clarity. Note that the picture in the article shows the flange nearly touching the side of the track, but in reality, the gap is rather bigger. It is this gap that makes it possible for the 1520 mm wheelsets to be shunted on the "compromise gauge track" in the bogie change hall.
For the 1435 mm wheelsets, the gap instead is wider than normal in the gauge change hall. The metal bar at the inside of the rails prevents the 1435 mm wheelsets from gliding off the rail surface - it works similar to the tramway track shown in green in the Wikipedia picture, the insides of the wheel flanges touch the metal bar before the running surface of the wheel comes close to gliding off the rail.
Attempting to run the 1520 mm wheelsets at considerable speed over a track with the gauge as in the bogie change hall would give significantly worse running properties. See also the article about the hunting oscillation that occurs when running a rail vehicle.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunting_oscillation
The suspension of the wheels and bogies takes up this oscillation, so you don’t feel it inside the car.
The wheel shape is carefully balanced between the requirements to limit this oscillation and to center the wheel correctly at the speeds and the curve radii that occur.
      Till

Can you please do a video on the Ghan railway in Australia, this north to South railway was built by two different companies one used broad gauge 5' 3" and the other standard gauge, back then the engines only ran on their own gauge but the carriages had their bogies swopped mid way, not sure how it was done?
The whole line was re-laid in standard gauge later on but not sure when? also this included moving the track bed in places where the old route would wash out.

At this border point, the passengers do not even have the option to leave the train while the bogies are changed. The border guards collect the passports right after the train arrives at Brest, so you are without passport during the bogie change a kilometre away from the border guard's office. Nice way to motivate the passengers to stay where they are supposed to stay... You don't want to miss the border guard returning your passport!
In contrast, when I took the transmanchurian train Beijing - Moscow, everybody had to get off at the Russian border station Zabaykalsk at the border to China while the carriages where shunted to the bogie change hall. So, the routines can differ a bit in different locations.
