Pandan weaving is a traditional craft, characterized by the creation of intricate patterns and designs using the leaves from a pandan plant/tree.
The pandan plant, a tropical species, is renowned for its long, slender, and aromatic leaves that possess a robust and pliable nature, making them the perfect material for weaving. Pandan weaving techniques are often handed down through generations, resulting in a diverse range of functional and decorative handicrafts. Baskets, mats, bags, hats, and including home decor items.
This traditional art form not only preserves the cultural heritage but also offers a sustainable livelihood for local artisans and is also environmentally friendly as the leaves are biodegradable.

This is a type of pandan leaves that are used for weaving. Another came from the same family of pandan leaves but is used for food flavoring and aromatics. Those are the leaves they use to flavor buko-pandan desserts and drinks. Also, they're a big part of Southeast Asian cuisine, particularly Philippines, thai & indo.

Your curiosity is genuine and people sense that. Hence their open joy interacting with you. Pandan is also used as a food flavoring. Wash and line the bottom of your rice cooker with pandan leaves then cook rice. The aroma of your rice is like vanilla but nuttier. Rice can also be wrapped in pandan leaves. Pandan extract is also used for flavoring pastries and cakes.

I am proud and grew up in that place Luisiana Laguna. That big pandan bag or deban. Weave as high as 5ft or higher. Used as farmers staple stockfile of newly harvested rice. Cause that leaves are sturdy than simply using sacks. That pandan leaves is a blessing from God. It keeps growing even no one will takes care. It is an organic long leaves. No need to fertilize.
This is one source of livelihood in that province. When we are a student from elementary to High school. If you weave at least 2 to 5 pandan bags after school. Tomorrow you will have penny as your school allowance. Nobody's asking money on their parents. You saw what you reap even at younger age.
Glad to see you vlog inpassing my hometown. And see your interest watching ilohan (boulders of rock and huge log) and woman weaving pandan bags. Thank you for seeing our simple living. Self-sufficient. You work to eat. You eat to live. Simple as that. My respect. 😘
