Re the coldness of Mohe versus Berlin and Liverpool ... the Gulf Stream, which is a warm ocean current, brings warmer than average water to the west coasts of the UK and the European continent, which makes it more temperate than similar locations inland. But the other reason is, as mentioned in the video, the fact that cold air masses can move unimpeded from the Artic Ocean to the Mohe region. The polar air masses behave similarly across central Canada, and often into the Central United States.
This corner of China is much colder than Berlin because it is close to the Pole of Cold. The Pole of Cold is located in Yakutia, which has the coldest winter temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere. Both Berlin and Liverpool are warmer because the Gulf Stream passes through the Atlantic Ocean not far from them. The Gulf Stream is a warm current that moderates the climate in Northern Europe. That is why there is such a big difference in temperature at the same latitude in the Northern Hemisphere.
Yes, you're right, the coldness is due to the cold Siberian air in winter, whereas western Europe is surround by waters and warmer air comes from the Atlantic. The accomodation you stayed in looked so clean, despite being in the middle of nowhere. It's fascinating to see a blend of Russian and Chinese cultures. Deciding which mushroom is edible and which is not is like playing Russian roulette. Some are so poisonous they can be fatal.
What a beautiful time of year in that region. When the lady said it was "impressive" that you were riding alone I thought 'you don't know the half of it', and from now on when I see a moose on TV I will always refer to it as a 'bulky-goofy'!
If you are still physically mobile and financially permitting, don't let age stop you. Nothing is more important than to find things that you like to do in life. I want to think age is just a number and I am 60 yo.
I love your mushroom picking trip. A year or so ago, I bought some expensive garden soil made locally in Tennessee, USA because my soil was not very good. They went to a lot of work to create this soil, and it had many kinds of life in it. After I used the bulk of it to fill my elevated garden beds, I had the guys spread the rest over the rest of the yard to give it a bit of vitality. Now, every morning when I walk the dog, there are many kinds of mushrooms in different places. There are a few old tree stumps in the yard, they have the best looking mushrooms. They look like some sort of natural works of art.
Mushrooming when you have only limited knowledge is very dangerous. many deaths in Australia eating wild mushrooms. Also be careful of red berries, these are also likely to be dangerous for human consumption.

When it`s brown it`s too late to cook it.

8:50 Kang is a special big hollow birck bed in north China, shared by the whole family. And the hollow part is connected to the stove in the kitchen, so the fuel can be used to cook and warm the bed at the same time. In winter, the family can spend most of the day on the Kang bed, eating, chatting, playing, working, and sleeping. It's more like a living room than simple bedroom, and I have a lot of precious childhood memory with it.
The reason why Siberian cities are so much colder than those in Western Europe despite being at the same latitude is not because Siberia is unnaturally cold, but that places like London are unnaturally warm. Northwest Europe is warmed up by the Jetstream that bring warm air from the south Atlantic. If that Jetstream breaks down, then London will become just as cold as Siberia.
Not really, In winter, the land cools sharply, unlike water, which can give off heat for a long time, softening frosts. Also, the mountains lying between the warm air masses from the south and Siberia do not allow warm air to pass through, consolidating the cold climate. Siberia has only Baikal but on such vast space it's not enough.
You are right. Apart from the Sun, the greatest influence onthe weather in the British Isles is the Atlantic Ocean's Gulf Steam and the prevelent south westerly winds we get. @feiryfel 4:40 la

The reason why heilongjiang so cold compared to european cities at same latitude is because europe has gulf stream. Gulf stream is a warm ocean current originate from gulf of mexico that help to keep temperature milder in europe. Heilongjiang is colder because of siberian high same as american city colder because of polar vortex.

This video with the birch trees, rivers and moose is almost like the Alaskan terrain. Very excited to learn moose in a different language.

Some parts of the video brought me back to the time i got to travel around Sri Lanka. I think it's the bouts of isolaled wilderness. Such a weirdly nice feeling.

A warning from an experienced mushroom picker: The assumption that a mushroom is edible because insects or snails eat it is a fatal mistake.
After being drilled into me so much that you only take what you know, It was a little scary seeing them take so many mushrooms without knowing if they are poisonous or not!
@@samuelforward8453 I was horrified watching them, but then I thought, if our dear little Chinese has now posted the video online, she is alive and everything turned out well.
I'm no expert but I know that some mushrooms can be dangerous through touch or even just being near, so that part made me nervous!
@@Moodiac67that's simply not true and complete fear mongering. No mushroom is dangerous to touch, or to be close.
Local Chinese usually develops knowledge what mushroom edible or not in their area. I wouldn't do it in foreign land with new mushroom species.
I can guess Yan , that the feeling you have at filming parts of the world where no humans have ever stepped foot upon , must be very thrilling ...it would certainly tickle me ..guaranteed . Best wishes on your fantastic storytelling skills....
19:22 cranberries grow in bogs (water). China grows them at a large facility in Fuyuan, Heilongjiang.

As always , very interesting journey through China , all the way to the border with Russia ! Thank you Yan , you're amazing .
Thank you, for such a great episode, beautiful and amazing!!!
Thank you Yan for showing such a beautiful part of china. It is simply mesmerizing. BTW mushrooms should be tried only if you are 💯 percent sure it is eatable. Otherwise amanita phalatoxin is highly fatal. ❤
伟大的冒险,感谢分享 🥰 great adventure, thanks for sharing 🥰
Fabulous as always! Thank you for opening my mind! Stay happy, healthy and wealthy too!
This is a very beautiful video, I'm so happy to see all of these different parts of China that you are able to show us!
Documentrian Extraordinaire, IMHO.
So awesome to see areas of the world that i’ve learnt names from at Geography and are able to see images off. It comes alive ❤
Hi Yan great video the people seem very friendly and better still trustworthy but if you live with temperatures as low as that you need to be able to rely on one another . The drone footage was fantastic .All the best Alec.
One thing for sure is you are very brave. Happy to follow your wonderful journey ❤
