I’m a lau hala weaver on the Big Island of Hawaii, although just a “six year old” at age 75! I really appreciate Kumu Mama’s effort to continue the tradition, understanding the obstacles trying to continue the legacy in the modern world with all its distractions…. But, a few weavers will carry it forward. My! How beautiful the ladies turn themselves out at weddings and church! Lovely, lovely!
I think any culture that puts so much effort and value into making such beautiful things from what grows around them, is far richer and more contented than anywhere in the modern world. Colour and pattern and the sheer joy of using their hands, an example to us all how we should love life and not covet lifestyle.
I too like cultures which expose beauty, not hide it and punish it for the crimes against it committed by people who weren't raised to treat it with respect and care.

The capture of the culture of Taupoo❤️ I’ve always Loved taupoo from first seeing them as a child. ( I am from Maui, Hawaii) we have a culture of lauhala weaving and we not only keep our hats for 6 months like Mama said but some last us for generations and only wear them on special occasions. THANK YOU VERY MUCH for sharing this Perspective with us all🙏🏾 Mahalo Nui
It is so vital to continue these traditions, even if the fruits of their labor is 'only' sold to tourists. Their language also need protection so we keep this knowledge for future generations.
