Safin's career was basically over by 26. Murray is in his prime at that age now. Irrespective of his temper, Safin would have have had 5-6 slams without the injuries, easily. Same thing with guys like Haas, Phillippoussis, Kuerten, Ferrero, etc. Look at Haas, at 35, 17 or 18 year career, injury problems every few months, yet he comes back and is still almost in the top 10. Shows you how talented he is. He would have had at least a couple slams had it not been for his bad luck.

@ArjunJethwa Still, I love it when Murray gets his ass kicked. He lost in the first round to Murray at the Aus Open a week or so later.

Yep. And I will continue to talk, whether Murray wins 10 more grand slams or not. Safin was touted to have double digit slam totals from the get go. Guys like Becker, Ivanisevic, Wilander, McEnroe, Agassi, Sampras all said Safin had the talent to have an incredible career if he stayed healthy and motivated. Unfortunately he had too many injuries and too many comebacks to make to have a major impact in tenis history. Murray has been more fortunate with his health.

Safin should have achieved more than 2 grand slams even with the injuries. He had big weapons in his game and his peak was in the early 2000s just before Federer and Nadal really started to dominate.... in that period guys like Hewitt, Ferrero, Gaudio and Johansson were winning majors even though they had a fraction of the talent at Safin's disposal. What a wasted opportunity.
Having said that in my view Murray is on a different level to Safin as an athlete, player and competitor. He may only have 3 slams to date but the competition has been much much tougher and his level has remained consistently high for the best part of 10 years.

Right. He's known as one of the few gifted tennis players. He's even touted as the future of tennis after winning against Sampras in 2000 USO finals.

Yeah I can. It took Murray quite a while. Congats to him. Safin is still the better player. Talent wise Murray is nowhere near Safin.
