Hi Thomas, thanks for your details! I'm used to all kind of triggers up to ~7 lbs but the interchangability of R93/R8 makes me very interested in that rifle and I think a used R93 can be bought at a reasonable price and then Andy's trigger would be a great ad-on. The only advantage of the R8 beeing a magazine. Yeah, the black forrest is great and I live just in our hunting area, so I can just walk from home. We have more forrest than meadows so distance is not as important as wind direction :)
I don`t have a R8, just considering if R93 or R8 would be the better solution. I use Steyr ProHunterMountain .308 and Blaser BBF 7x65R for hunting and wanted for lonrange use my Steyr Scout but I have precision problems with that gun. Reading your blog I made myself christmas and birthday and bought a S&B 3-20x50 with MSR. Nice scope but big and has to be mounted farther to barrel. Could mount it to Scout but precision... What mount do you use with your R93? Yes walking is great but car also ;)
Great, so I think I`ll go for a used R93 and Bix`n Andy`s Trigger. I thought about getting a Picatinny rail to bolt on (like in one of your first blogs) and try a LaRue with 10 or 20 MOA. Thought it would be more repeatable precision taking the scope off and on for long range but if you are content with the Blaser mount then that must be good enough. Moderator would be nice but is only possible with rare special permit. What other calibers did you try for long range? Also .300 WSM?
I heard a lot talking about long range rifles have to be hand made rifles and spacing for cartridges has to be limited and that normal bolt rifles can`t really be used for long range but your blogs give me hope that this is not absolutely true :) Thanks for your great blogs, I soaked them all up now and am impressed about the professionalism of your movies! You also have a great shooting range there! Sorry for writing so much, just got too excited about the topic :) Best regards Claus
Is 6.5x284 your standard now for everything? What if you go for closer distances? No big hematoma with roes? We shoot more closer distances from 30 (wild boars from stand in low lights) up to 150m is standard and up to 250m is mostly limit. With the closer distances you have more problems with faster bullets so there a .308 is nice but for the long range target shooting I think I should switch to a faster one :) What length do you order your barrels?
Hi Thomas, I found your great blog searching for long range target shooting tips. As I see you are also a great and serious hunter and your equipment tips are very interesting too, thanks for that! I`m a target shooter&hunter myself but here in the Black Forrest 200-250m are already "longrange".. ;) Do you use for longrange target shooting also mostly your R93? What trigger pull do you use for that? And how compares your trigger to the R8 trigger? Thanks and best regards Claus
Great video blogs. I live only two hours from where you were shooting looks great for long range shooting. I use 120g amax in my 6.5x55 really puts deer down well. What range do you shoot out to culling on that ground?
Did the gunsmith adapt only one ring or did he adapt both rings at the base? Or did he adapt only one ring at the base and afterwards hone both rings? 0.6mm is not much but it could have torsion effect on the tube, right?
Ahh ok. I guess what I meant is that the rifle recoils differently depending on whether you place the bipod on soft ground or hard ground, which can cause the muzzle to jump. I was wondering whether you had to re-zero the rifle going from one surface to the other.
Great, thanks for the tip! I just ordered a mount and wait for it. I got my "new" (about 10 years old but in very good shape) R93 today with a standard .308 barrel and with a borrowed scope it shot indeed very well. I also already phoned with Andy to get his trigger. :) But 6.5x284 is very expensive. Blaser sales told me if they make it, it will be €420,- extra so it would be somewhat like €1400? WOW... perhaps my next christmas will be a 6,5x55 barrel :) You should get provision from them!! :)
Just got my "new" R93 today! Tried it out this evening with a friend`s scope and was amazed about the accuracy with several ammo. Trigger is about 700g. Is this standard? I`m very happy with it. Now I have to get a scope mount and a Versapod-mount to get closer to a copy of Thomas`s R93... ;) Greetings and I wish you a good season (our`s is starting 1st of May)!
one more (sorry, few more ;) question to your R93: do you know if there are precision differences between standard and semi weight barrels? And can front and rear sight be removed? I never saw 6,5x284 barrels here, where do you get them? Thanks and best regards Claus
Nice vid. The open scenery was absolutely beautiful. Nice to see you with the full load out. That is a nice spot on the pack for the rear bag. This deer/doe, what was the range you took it down at?
Hello Thomas , your videos are out standing and full of information to learn from. Could i ask you please what coat you are wearing for shooting in Scotland . Thanks Once again.
A-max - Ive just bought a box and loaded a few up - yet to shoot anything in anger though. what load are you using for these, and does much run on or do they tend to drop on the spot?
Sorry Thomas but your videos are being overshadowed by Gem, ha ha !!! What a star. Great video once again. Is yours the "Parker Hale" Bipod with spigot, and do you use this because of any known problems with the Harris swivel which I know a few people have commented on before?
Nice vid again! I am surprised no one jumped on you with Amax and deer laws, but it puts them down. Good shooting. Are you back soon in buck season? ATB Roe Stalker
If you came to Australia you would have to come shooting with me :) Mind you if i was to go over to your neck of the wood's, I'll have to bring the Aussie heat and sun with me LOL. Thomas another good film mate ;)
Sorry if these questions aren't directly related to this video. I have been watching your videos for a while, and they have greatly helped my shooting. I know you shoot a short barrel 6.5x284, and was wondering how well you think a 260 remington would work at say 20"? Also, the barrels look fairly skinny as far as contour goes, do you notice your groups opening up while shooting longer strings? I currently shoot a semi custom .308 with a heavy 22" barrel, and looking at something lighter.
The season here starts in May with roe bucks and barren does and in September with does and fawns, bucks end in October and the rest in January. But the real buck hunting is end of Juli, beginning of August. I phoned already with Andy and had also email with vertebrae.no. It seems the trigger is even better price in Norway than in Germany or Switzerland. The farther away the cheaper, so you should get it at a great price down under... ;) Cheers and have fun!
..Great for you that you own a LRS2! It has also a magazine but is definitifely too long (and heavy I guess) for hunting. Otherwise that would be the gun ;) Blaser is very common here because of security (loaded but save) and my first was a BBF (12/7x65R). I just found a slightly used R93 for half price, so I will call Andy today :) Yeah, Thomas`s blog is great but it has a drawback: I have to take care now, because looking and reading is creating a demand and that demand is creating costs... =D
Hunters here always joke about repeating noise ("RitschRatsch") of R93/R8. I used a 8x57 in indoor range for some battue training and was amazed how easy and fast you can recharge without leaving the target. The only thing I didn`t like was the lack of magazine (in driven hunts you always have to clear your gun several times when moving, so removing a mag and one round is better than removing several rounds each time). R8 has mag and better trigger but is too much after buying a S&B3-20x50...
Nope, Hi-vis clothing is fairly uncommon here. We've started seeing some the last years, it seems to be mostly amongst the hunting parties that go for moose and similar team efforts.
Gem was nice, she was the retired dog that had been replaced by a German wirehair. It took me a season to understand what she was saying, much more subtle than the previous dog I worked with. Thanks for bringing me back to this episode and the attached memories.
they did work well.... shot a buck last night who, despite seeing me and running 20 yards before the shot, dropped on the spot. small hole either side of him, and soup in the middle. ill have a go with the 123gr if i can get some!
i read some threads saying they werent suitable for game, but a friend of mine swears by them. interestingly they did no damage to the deer carcass, yet literally smashed a fox to pieces this morning.
Will give them a go. I shoot alot of rabbits on the ground you saw on the video. Can shoot to 1000+yards in places. On the estate the kill between 15-25,000 rabbits a year. I do most my stalking on ground in north east Scotland but would like to try stalking where you are in your videos. Most places in England u can only shoot one beast in a outing but I tend to go where there's no real limit and u can shoot afew in one time
Beautifully made! Tremendous work! Congratulations and thanks for posting this!

Is your point of impact affected more by the surface from which you shoot soft/hard ground, or from the way you hold the rifle?

Hi,What sort or bullet holder are you using on your stock? It obviously doubles as a cheek rest.Love the videos keep them coming !

Thomas, do you mean you use a COAL of 79,00 mm with the Hornady A-Max 140? Thanks in advance.
I am interested if he still thinks a moderated shot can damage your hearing. I would consider wearing them on the range.....
whats the price on a rifle like that? just bare rifle?
Hi-vis clothing is required when hunting with firearms there? Blaze orange is required here in the USA.
Nope, Hi-vis clothing is fairly uncommon here. We've started seeing some the last years, it seems to be mostly amongst the hunting parties that go for moose and similar team efforts.
Your vids are beautiful. Great work. What make and model is your rifle. I have a lab too. Her name is Georgia but we call her Chewbie.
Gem was nice, she was the retired dog that had been replaced by a German wirehair. It took me a season to understand what she was saying, much more subtle than the previous dog I worked with. Thanks for bringing me back to this episode and the attached memories.
Another great film.
Why do you wear ear defenders when using a moderator? Seems like overkill....
specs on the rifle/load please 🙏
Blaser R93 6,5x284 w 140 amax (I would think, ooold film)
What are you planning to use now, when the 140gr Amax are(?) discontinued?
Most likely the Hornady ELD X. Just need for it to arrive in Norwegian stores and I'll start bunkering projectiles.
I am also considering the ELD. Hope to see a THLR review soon :)
Interesting thanks for posting - I will now use a ear defenders on the range.

What caliber ? and awesome video
Thanks! 6,5x284 loaded to 6,5x55 or 260 or 6,5 Creedmoor velocities.
i read some threads saying they werent suitable for game, but a friend of mine swears by them. interestingly they did no damage to the deer carcass, yet literally smashed a fox to pieces this morning.
An A-max bullet holds the longest range kill record of 3540 meters in Iraq by a jtf-2 Canadian sniper
ok
should note: interested in shooting 123 and 140 amax's for deer.
your dog is cute
I See you didn't get stopped using Amax in UK always causes a big debate over the legality here :D
👍👍👍
Thanks! Sorry for the late reply, today has seen a rush of comments that UA-cam hasn't displayed to me earlier.
with the deer there was a small entrance and a small exit. with the fox........big mess!
Thats shame, there must be plenty of bucks about.
because you can never be too safe. Who cares if you don't and he does
Will give them a go. I shoot alot of rabbits on the ground you saw on the video. Can shoot to 1000+yards in places. On the estate the kill between 15-25,000 rabbits a year. 25,000?! Holy crap!
