I imagine the neighbors on both sides of your apartment are very happy to have you renovate, it will make the whole street look much better. You are exactly the kind of people Italy is looking for to restore these old homes. You are doing an amazing and beautiful job! You two know how to get things done and aren't afraid of hard work.

I agree! I am an American, but my grandparents are from Sicily. Sometimes it gets a bad rap. But these two lovely people are showing the beautiful side of Sicily.
I have a Sicilian friend who wants to move back and fix up one of those 1 euro houses. She's been very successful over here in the US, but says there is no place like Sicily in the entire world.
This is so exciting to see that 1000 year old home come to life. It's going to be beautiful. ❤

What you're most likely seeing on the outside of your "1,000 old building" is an ancient architectural structure called a "batter or talus." A batter or talus is a sloping face at the base of a fortified wall. Defensive walls were often built thicker at the bottom. This was to support the curtain wall of a castle or fortress, or the outside walls or buildings of a castle from cannons and being breached, but also to hold the thick walls up as support too. *Try to find some records in your church parish that will explain who the owners of your building were and the history of your town. Most of your Italian villages and towns were attacked through-out the thousands of years of history by Italian city-state monarchs, but also by pirates, and even the Turkish Ottoman Empire.

Just a little tip: I think you should open the kitchen on the room without windows and also to the room with the balcony so you can create a contemporary and open plan living area. We had an olive orchard when I was a baby and growing up - so watching you with the trees brings back so many fond memories of playing in the orchard while my parents worked the trees. Will you explain how you were able to have the construction men to do the house reno so quickly for you? I was always told that if I want to renovate in Italy - finding the team to do it and then waiting your turn takes months or years. But for you, it happened so quickly. The house is lovely, by the way.

Of course Luce is the star of the show. Her ride on the motorized tricycle was a joy to behold. I am glad to see Luca is not overdoing it and has excellent workmen to help in the renovation.
