- This is The Cars Benjamin Orr on lead vocals with It's All I Can Do and a stripped back alternate version. Also a hello from Benjamin from Live Aid and also a Ta-Ta at the end added
Because the purpose is to non-commercially share the legacy of Benjamin and The Cars,this fan made video is being uploaded under the terms of Fair Use. No copyright infringement intended. Below is the detailed information about the actual song.
I was sent this ages ago as mp3 file from a friend and at first it was believed to be a demo version but clearly sounds more like an earlier or alternate version. I have tried to find out more information and all I could find out that it seems to be an alternate version from the Candy-O sessions I think perhaps the Monitor Mix added that there are some different words in one of the lyric lines ( where Benjamin sings ~Once in a dream it all comes to you ~ instead~Once in a moment it all comes to you~ and this version also is without the backing vocals, and is without some of the extra synth overdubs and also without the lead guitar overdubs. I like this ~stripped down aspect~ of this. I wonder if the band did different versions of some songs before they decided which one to finish off for the albums.
Update thanks to a kind fan, this is the Monitor Mix as I found out today, had to laugh at one fan's desperate attempt to have her say.
I have used photos of Benjamin and The Cars I found on the net and I used my own photographs of my beautiful adopted island home Tasmania (as a backdrop), this time I used photos I love so much of Benjamin from different eras of The Cars. I also used black and white photos and since I got this new monitor I added water colour effects, some are sketched and most of the photos have had some work done like paint effects, some were black and white and I added colours to those. I have used photos of Benjamin I found on the net in particular taken by Ebet Roberts © and Robert Post © . Fans have often asked whether this song was ever performed live or not and if not why? A few years ago a fan asked Elliot Easton on either Twitter or another social media and Elliot Easton replied that it was not a favourite by the band members. Since then I also heard from someone who has great knowledge of The Cars that he remembered that it was performed a few times in the early days and another person whom I trust and who knew Benjamin has mentioned that Benjamin was concerned that the song had a lot of vocal and synth etc over dubs and perhaps therefore not sound as great live as on record, and I also was told that this song was perhaps was a touch different from their other material at the time, as not until Drive did they perform any haunting ballad live. So I do believe it had to do with with the song production on the album is very heavily layered especially vocally and richly dubbed and to perform this song live would have meant that it would not have sounded the same or that the band could have done it justice so it was also based on this decision.
Here is some information about the actual song and single. It's All I Can Do is a new wave influenced pop rock song. According to Brett Milano, writer of the Just What I Needed: The Cars Anthology album notes It's All I Can Do was an affecting, straight-ahead piece of romantic pop, give or take a line like When I was crazy, I thought you were great. The track was described as gentle by AllMusic reviewer Greg Prato, while Hamish Champ, writer of The 100 Best-Selling Albums of the 70s called the song laidback.
The bass lines and the G major guitar riffs have a major rock feel, but the song is softened down with Benjamin Orr's vocals and Greg Hawkes keyboard and synth lines.
The song was released as the follow-up to the Let's Go single on September 25, 1979

This is my favorite Cars song. I've heard interviews where Ric Ocasek said the songs he wrote didn't necessarily come from his personal experience, but when I listen all I hear is a fight song for each of us treated rotten by their love. "When I was crazy, I thought you were great." Tough trying not to sing & cheer through that line. Ben's voice made it even more awesome, can't imagine anyone else singing it. 💗😍💗

Thank you :) Candy-O was the first album I bought by The Cars as I saw "Let's Go" and just loved this singer, the band and Down Under on our island of Tasmania we had to order this as an export album those days as it had just been released. So I waited and I still to this remember how I felt playing it for the first time and hearing It's All I Can Do. I had saved for ages and put a fantastic stereo with great speakers and the best 4 channel amp etc on lay by with for those days great headphones. That song blew me away and to this day is one of my favourite songs. ( I still have the original vinyls , as well as the expanded CD versions) and still have my amp & speakers :) ( turntable died ages ago as did the ' cassette player' but the rest is still awesome. After hearing this album I then ordered their first one and every one (with Benjamin Orr) since. Love this song, love the vocals and will never tire of it ever. One of my top three favorite Cars tunes.
Titled a “Rare alternate version,” which it is because I think it’s an earlier demo of the song which is why it sounds less refined and like Ben was still figuring working out how he was going to sing certain lines i.e. which ones he was gonna end on a higher or lower note. it was just still under development but it’s always interesting to hear these rare versions. Ben's songs always are triple better live than the studio recordings, which are still good. This song would have definitely been over the top live!

@Ben Orr - I’ve read that Benjamin’s voice on the studio version is so layered, he’s harmonizing with himself, among the concerns causing the band to decide the song wouldn’t “travel well” to do on tour. It was performed live rarely if at all. ☹️
Rumor has it that Benjamin hated the song and refused to perform it live. Poor Benjamin, the subject of many rumors! 🙁

@@benjaminorrelectricangelro5493Yes, it’s beautiful, very clear and it’s somewhat haunting. I went to his grave in Sept for his birthday, a deep fog came in. It was a hit sunny day and as we were heading towards the road the cemetery is on. A deep fog came in.

At first I thought it was the same version until I heard the vocals I really liked it it had a live sound to it also when I heard that extra strong lead guitar that was bitching although I wasn't as happy that they didn't have the nice strong lead guitar solo but overall I thought it had a stronger musical sound there was also last harmonizing I noticed but Benjamin Orr was so great so underrated and the cars were always be dear to my heart thank you so much for caring and posting!

It is my deepest desire to somehow help in my small way to make sure fans remember Benjamin and perhaps also find new fans, so far I have noticed some new young fans who also are musicians so this is lovely for me to see. Can anyone identify which of the 3 guitarists is producing the scratchy squeaky string sounds. Is it Ben’s bass playing or Ric’s rhythm guitar? This is usually considered less than ideal technique but I think if really adds to the mix
I am replying with my new channel as I retired from this channel some time ago. I remember asking my husband ( singer, songwriter who plays guitar and bass and has done so in different bands and recordings) and I remember both of us saying it really does add to this mix, and I thought it was the bass and Gerry told me ( I think) it was the rhythm guitar . I would have to ask him again, but at the moment we are both very busy with projects, Gerry with a new single and other music he is recording so I cannot say if and when we get to actually sit down , put the studio headphones on and really listen. Gerry owns these headphones that are so clear that it seems to separate the instruments and it would be perfect to hear but alas a lot of other things also keep us busy at the moment. I am interested what others think, I am pretty sure Gerry said it was guitar not bass as I thought it was bass and again I felt it was the rhythm guitar.

@@victorferguson5713 Hi, the studio ( for recording) headphones are so precise that sometimes I feel, they may be too precise, you hear everything. Only the best of singers, songs, musicians sound great with these as everything is so clear. But this is what these headphones for, to hear if your recording is good enough, so in some ways I prefer Gerry's older studio (also great quality but perhaps not as clear or precise) headphones. But personally for me , I was speechless hearing a song from the late 60s and how incredible the quality of the recording was, the clarity and most importantly how incredible Barry's pure vocals were. @@calvin-coohey2112 Yep. I know , I just did not want to come off as being arrogant about knowing this for a fact. It is not known however if Benjamin had any input in the song lyrics but knowing Ric I feel he wrote the lyrics. If you analyze the lyrics they have the typical style of Ric's writing. Also I was told by a loved one of Benjamin that he did not want to sing this live as it would not sound the same as it has a lot of overdubs and repeats. I think the others also felt it may be too repetitive as a live performance and not have the same feel as on the album. Personally I think it would have sounded great but I love this song, always have. Sorry, I am replying with my other music channel as I am uploading a video and could not change over to the correct channel to reply. I have ' retired ' from this Benjamin channel and wanted to spend time doing other things and also went back on a personal quest, a channel of someone very dear to me and whose music was the start of everything that followed ,he was very well known in England, Germany, France and the Benelux countries. Sorry I have retired from this channel. I think I have a few on this channel as in demo versions of Bye Bye Love and Cap'n Swing that pre date the Cars versions. I do not have time , so sorry, otherwise I would look them up for you.
