  • Huge thanks to everyone who pitched in and helped us with this massive upgrade in gear. Super excited to bring everyone much crispier looking footage that looks more realistic than we've even been able to before. I hope this is a bit of insight to how we make videos and what goes on on the backend of video production.

    it's finally here !!! glad we all chipped in & helped make this possible
    also, knowing you geek out as much as i do over tech/camera gear makes me smile 😊
    as a *Sony α7R III* shooter (mainly photos, but some video), y'all will *NOT* be disappointed.
    just know that the menu system is not as intuitive as *Canon* - but other then that, new *Sony* mirrorless cameras are superb.
    also, saw you're using *Tamron* lenses. if future budget allows, look into *Sigma* . their newer *"Art"* series are cheaper & usually sharper than *Sony* lenses.

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  3 роки тому

      Thanks a lot! Stoked to learn this system. I compared the Sigma to the Tamron I got and picked the Tamron b/c the comparable Sigma used some weird system for adding filters to the back (sensor side) of the lens and also b/c the Tamron was significantly lighter. People also complain a lot about some Sigma lenses letting dust inside of their bodies, but I don't have hard proof on this. The Tamron seems to be doing awesome, thankfully. -E

    Wow, the difference in definition is night and day! XD lol I couldn't resist. The only nitpick I would have is the background gets blurred occasionally. I know it's one of those features that most filmmakers see as a plus, so it's not really a bad thing about the camera, just that it is kind of a bummer when more often than not we are wanting to see the background. I'm sure that can be easily adjusted with the settings though. The beard is most definitely more majestic. ;) I can't wait to see the beautiful ocean shots with this new camera! Eric, in my years of vlogging, I learned that the (3) most important things about camera gear used are: 1. Video and audio quality, 2. Wide angle to capture as much of your surroundings as possible (not just the face of the vlogger), and 3. Stable video (nobody wants to watch shaky video). It's that third "requirement" which made using big and heavy gear out of the question for me.

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  3 роки тому

      I've avoided heavy gear for years, but this isn't *that* heavy. And to be honest, a little more weight *helps* keeping b-roll landscape shots smoother. Of course if it's a major worry you can always get a gimble! haha -E

    Great comparison Eric! What a world of difference. Better contrast, better low-light, better overall. I did notice that around the 27:40 mark, when walking on the bridge with the sky tree in the background, that you probably had the aperture on the sony a bit more open than on the canon. The depth-of-field (DoF) on the canon got the sky tree in focus while the sony failed there, in this shot.
    Looking at the mario kart vlog as well, it seems that the sony prefers a shallow DoF as default setting. Rendering in focus stuff tack sharp, and having a nice "portrait style" drop-off to the background, which is perhaps a bit less desired in vlogging where the background is also of interest.
    Regardless, this is something that can easily be fixed with proper settings, and I'm sure the camera will get even better (read: you'll learn all the ins and outs) with some use.
    .. and now I have GAS for a Sony. But to stick old manual lenses on with adapters. Manual focus, and optical distortions everywhere, but very awesome for photography. Congrats on the new camera!

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  3 роки тому +1

      Yea, the aperture of the lens on the Sony goes to 2.8, the Canon was only to 4.0, so it's not something I've even needed to keep in mind before regarding bokeh, using the Canon I'd roll with it as open as possible b/c the ISO would get incredibly noisy even at low rates. With the Sony I need to close the aperture down when I'm outside and if the ISO ends up climbing up thats OK b/c the image processing on the Sony is so good it can get crazy high before it gets horribly noisy. It's a learning process, but it's something I'm aware of and trying to fine tune the sweet spot so things aren't too blurry in the backgrounds, even if it looks "nice" it's not ideal for the storytelling we are doing. -E

    Hybrid Sony user here! Love the comparison between the two and I'm looking forwards to the future videos with the new camera!
    Tips and tricks (Camera nerd in me 😂):
    You can probably adjust the auto iso to a higher limit (at least the a6300 / A7 can auto to the max iso) you can probably crank that up to an acceptable level. Shoot PP1 or neutral to give yourself a little bit more flexibility in post to adjust your shadows and highlights.
    I notice alot of clipping in the sky (zebras is your best friend in those cases) you can probably set the exposure compensation lower so it try it's best with exposure so less messing with the settings more going out and getting the shot :)

    I’m pumped to see the outputs from this new setup. I’ve always loved how your videos often feel like a tour, and the a7siii is a beast especially for auto mode and low light. Keep in mind that it’s got dual native ISO based on your picture profile, so while it’s generally pretty clean when it comes to low light noise often you’ll get a glorious image if you keep it sitting at one of the two native ISO’s and adjust other setting or an ND filter to get the right exposure.

    Hey Eric! I have a suggestion/thought. For the really bright days like you were showing here in the park, you should be able to expose for the sky (or find a middleground), and bring up the dark levels in post without getting too much noise. That could go for both cameras, though you'll obviously be able to pull more detail back with the Sony.

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  3 роки тому +1

      Yea, I tried this with the Canon and never was able to get anything that didn't look like trash. I have a lot more data to use with the Sony though so it's something I will keep in mind when filming. Still learning it's limits and such. -E

  • @russcattell955i
    @russcattell955i 3 роки тому

    Eric, you have to take in account the different lens specs in low light. The Canon stops at f4 with a 55mm filter screw mount. The Tamron at f2.8 and 67mm screw mount, the screw mount usually is defined by the front lens diameter. Therefore better (specially low) light gathering ability. I'm sure the Sony has better image processing too. Sadly my 61 year old eyes & 480p you tube transmission does little for image clarity.
    Must say the colour rendition on the Sony is richer = nicer.

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  3 роки тому +2

      Yea, I was comparing the entire systems to one another, I understand a lot of this is the lens. I know it's not fair to compare them like that, but the main problem with the Canon is that they just don't have a lens available that is as fast as the Sony line. Oh, but if I crank the Tamron lens on the sony to f4.0 the difference is still shocking, haha. -E

  • @travelswithblindcane

    Okay, I'm pretty much blind so I can't tell a lot of difference between the two to be honest, but I can definitely see more color clarity in the Sony. New videos are gonna be TV quality. The Sony audio is a lot better, so maybe try getting a dead cat that happens to fit if it doesn't have a 1st party part.

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  3 роки тому +1

      Yea, we built a better dead cat, but it's still not amazing. Wish Sony would just sell a first party one that worked well.

  • @johngrubb007
    @johngrubb007 3 роки тому +1

    Could you move the dead cat from the Rhode to the Sony mike? There is a lot of improvement with the Sony and your options because of the much better dynamic range will be a world of difference for you. I'm strickly a stills photographer and we have the same basic rules for exposure, that being "expose to the right". You can bring out details in darker areas but if your brights are blown out, you can't recover them. One of the things you were doing when comparing your shots was relying on the Canons screen which is a big handicap. The Sony's screen is much higher quality so for the Canon, a mediocre shot is not going to look as good as it actually is because of the limitations of the screen. One more thing to mention. 4K will put a huge load on your computer system. Hopefully, you won't have to upgrade the computer too. I don't know what you have but when I experimented with my Fuji with 4K, my travel laptop couldn't process it. I hope that makes sense. Looking forward to some videos from the new camera. Have fun.

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  3 роки тому +2

      Unfortunately without destroying the deadcat I can't move it over, the shape of the mics is drastically different. And I worry about a deadcat that isn't properly fitted banging around on the mic causing other issues. The deadcat we built is OK, but there is room for improvement, I suspect.
      And yea, the Canon screen is....not accurate. I haven't tuned my brain to the Sony screen yet either, but it's not perfect either, but it's sure better.
      I'm not too worried about the 4K being a huge problem on my computer, worst case I can edit with proxy files, which won't be too much of a problem regarding my workflow. In fact, I can even have the camera create proxies on the fly for me if I want. The 4K upgrade is more about having space for my triple backup system. We filmed over the weekend in 1080p and it was about 30gigs a day generated, if you multiply that by four (roughly) for 4K that could get out of hand really fast.
      -Eric

    Great overview of both cameras and the differences from a consumer point of view. I agree with your opinions on the Canon m6. For the price, it's solid, but the lens choice and such doesn't compare to the new top tier consumer cameras like the Sony or new Canon mirrorless cameras. You definitely got an awesome upgrade and the footage looks great! Not gonna lie I am tempted with the A7Siii, but the costs to switch over is a big reason why I can't pull the trigger.

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  3 роки тому +1

      Yea man, the m6 is just super dated at this point and Canon didn't keep it alive with more lens options. It was fine for the time we got it, but I have an endless number of complaints about it now.
      In a way I'm lucky I had bought into a basically worthless system b/c it didn't hurt at all to jump into a new one, if that makes sense. If I had tons of actually useful Canon glass and such it'd have been much more sting to make the jump to a Sony system.
      I'm going to have to tag along with you sometime on a photo-walk and learn more about actually taking photos now that I have a decent camera. I've got video stuff down to a comfortable level, but I'm terrible getting a great photo, haha. -E

    Nothing wrong with 1080P, I'd bet few viewers can see 4k on their computers, unless they are using a high end gaming PC, or watching on their media room big screen smart TV's.

    ND Filters Can be a big help for any camera rather cheap or expensive can greatly improve your images especially outdoors. Not sure if anybody mention earlier in the comments but these can be great investments and make huge differences.

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  3 роки тому +1

      Yea.....sort of. The really thing for us is keeping backgrounds clear, something I didn't account for when filming this. I need to close my aperture down for that which starts to eliminate the need for ND filters. If I wanted to keep the bokeh in strong light of course ND filters would help. It's something I may get at some point, but I'd like a high quality variable ND and they don't exactly come cheap, haha. -E
