Can someone explain to me why they did not get the i30n performance instead? And on top of that, they compared it to the top of the line megane RS. I am sorry but this is not a comparison worth taking note of.
Top of the line megane RS? This is the standart version of the megane with manuel gearbox and the cup chasis. The Trophy version and the Trophy-R Version are yet to come, which are the "top of the line megane rs"
I think that was because with the versions they actually tried the point they wanted to make (that the Megane may come out on top of the i30Ns whichever version the latter are, but they have become less of a pure driver's car than they used to be and the i30Ns are, thus the i30Ns are a slightly better choice if focus is on driving pleasure rather than lap times or 0-100 drag races) would be carried over even more clearly. This is a great test indeed, because it also highlights you don't need to pay for the Performance pack in the Hyundai if you don't want to pursue best lap times and the likes of them.
this is neither the "performance version" for the megane, Trophy is... And this is probably not the "ultimate" version they will do, wait for a trophy-R ...
The base Renault would be the standard 280 without the Cup Chasis pack, if they wanted this to be fair they'd either have brought a performance N or a base 280 without the Cup Chasis. This is just a completely biased test in favour of one car.
When you've booked (& paid for) exclusive use of the track for a day, and also booked the other cars to be available that day & paid for their fuel/insurance, you can't not make content. 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for testing a slightly less optioned car! I think it would actually be a better daily driver for a lot of people. Everyone loves comparing track times, but it's really a non issue on the road - handling, fun and comfort when not "racing" are important factors to consider. I'd probably get the LSD but with the smaller wheels depending on how harsh the ride is. In my area things like a Mazda mx5 would do great on the less than perfect roads
Because in this case they could have tested the N vs. the Megane GT. And surprise: The N would have been quicker. Comparing makes only sense with matching cars
I think it's a great comparison. Plenty of top of the line comparisons out there already, what if someone is considering a slightly less optioned car? They'd love this test
Wow so much hate for an entertaining 8 minutes watching two good drivers rag the shit out of a couple of pretty rad press cars, while also educating us on both of them and having a good time. And all for free.
I must admit, never been a massive fan of Megane's but this one is probably the best looking hot hatch in a long time! i30 is a great car, shame it wasn't the N version would of been intresting to see them battle.
I support the later response, how much did Renault pay you guys to make Hyundai look bad? East vs European, actually part European. It may have heaps of Nissan parts in it due to the "Reno" Nissan partnership. Japan and France vs Korea. The top spec hyundai model with lsd and other added bits would have smoked that Reno.
So Hyundai sell an i30N Performance, whixh has the same amount of power and same type of mechanical diff to match the Megane, yet you chose the standard i30N which is cheaper, less powerful and without the diff a lot less capable. Not to mention the majority of sales of the i30N are of the Performance model. Stupid test.
I really prefer the Hyundai. Though I seen a RS in France in the summer and it defo looks better as a poster. The Hyundai is alot more normal car looking. Much like the early type R, wasn't bonkers looking.
As a 280 Cup owner, this test was a bit lopsided and unfair as the full fat i30n Performance would have been far better suited to taking on the Megane.. Think both cars are great and sadly the era of the ICE hot hatches is on the way out but with the Megane RS, i30n, Type R, 308 GTI it is a great swan song...
The base i30N isn't sold anywhere around my country..it's all about the real deal...the Performance version..and this isn't a comparison..they should do it over again with the i30N Performance...25hp more, the LSD (Limited Slip Differential) and bigger brakes ...Faster trough corners ,faster in straight lineand less breaking-fade, so...I just ordered that version.. :)
All the hate for not havibg the performance version of the i30N. Yes it would have been better to have the performance versionbut there may not have been one available. Or maybe they were supplied with the wrong press car, or it could be one of their long-termers. They were very honest about it in the video, and Matt was still having a blast, a good advert for the standard i30n I would say
Then the comparison should have not been done until the model with similar spec from Hyundai becomes available, or they could have asked Renault for megane RS model matching the same Power output as the base model of the i30N, no justification to this at all besides a review that is paid for or sponsored. I'm a fan of the Megane RS and I also love the i30N which I believe will have one over the Megane had it been the i30N performance model.
@@swanblake I own a 265 trophy but out of these cars I would probably take the i30n performance. I Just think all the hate on autocar is unjustified. The i30n still gets a great review and they adress the fact that it is the standard version several times.
Blake Swan these two are obsessed with Renault most specially the Megane RS when in reality the old RS and latest ones get destroyed by the Type Rs FK2 and FK8.....they just wont admit it 😂
Yes... big fail going to the track without the performance version of the Hyundai. This was an unfair match. But any away it was good to know the difference between a more focus track car and a normal one, for your money.
In mine the Megane RS is sold for 30k, way cheaper than anything else except the i30N which is 29.995. they're basically the same price if you live in a civilized nation
Yeah shame it wasn’t a Performance, but look at the positives - the internet is full of reviews of them so this gives you a look at the model a step down. Good insightful video as usual by Autocar 👍🏻
Megane RS 280 Cup? Or Hyundia i30N non-performace package? That is the most rhetorical question ever. Why would you even make a video on that? Missed opportunity.
Should have been the I30N performance version to be an equal match. But considering the regular i30n can give the top specced Renault Megane a taste of it's own medicine on their first try, tells me more about how bad Renault is or how bad they have gotten.
Very disappointed that you chose to go ahead with test even though Hyundai only delivered the base i30n. Look forward to rematch with performance version.
I had to watch it again to confirm I heard it right This whole video was kind of pointless wasn't it? And the last part when the "Megane driver was boasting and i30 N driver was admitting defeat" was rather comical You guys are bad actors lmao
Let's just turn it around. The perfomance version of the i30n would've just roasted the megane. Even the standardversion was close to the megane.. Btw. the i30n looks better, sounds better and is cheaper, so clearly the winner overall.
I now that the i30n its not the peeformance but megane with 4 control i30n dont has to do anything in circuit. And if people want i30n performance we has to get the megane rs trophy r too
Matt prior.....mr...”yes ummmm I think it has errrrrr aroundddd twooo eighty bhp!” You know what it has stop acting casual and cool and just say what it has! Winds me up!
Autocar, you guys had a great chance of making a gem of a video here. Most other channels have been comparing the Civic Type R with the Megane RS, which is also an unfair comparison given the Honda's power advantage. You did mention a fair number of times the power disadvantage of the i30N in this case, but that hardly makes it a worthy track battle as a result. Even the conclusion you guys came to was vague.
Mate, the Civic Type R has got about 320 bhp. The Megane RS for now has got about 275 bhp. An i30N has the same amount of power in its Performance Pack guise along with a slippy diff. So that's my point.... The Hyundai and Renault both have about 275 bhp and both have slippy diffs. Makes for a perfect battle
GazRwood Civic Type R FK2 or FK8 the latest model destroys the Megane and the Trophy version won’t stand a chance either. They do right comparing the Megane with the likes of the Hyundai, Golf GTI or an ST.
What I take from this is how good of an effort Hyundai has made on their first attempt at a true hot hatch - the Megane should be better considering how many great hot hatches Renault has made before, yet it isn't. Good work Hyundai.
Nobody buys the non-performance over the GOOD version of the i30N which is way faster (+25hp,LSD). This review makes no sense, I thought you'd be comparing the Megane with the equivalent i30N
shame on you, not picking i30n performance version...
Whatever, either way, the megane would win
I30n performance. will go against Trophy and still lose. then Trophy R will dismantle the Type R.
I agree. The Megane RS is more expensive than the i30N performance so yes it’s not the best comparison.
The Megane RS will have a new Trophy version coming up soon. I'm waiting for that one
it was not available.
Can someone explain to me why they did not get the i30n performance instead? And on top of that, they compared it to the top of the line megane RS. I am sorry but this is not a comparison worth taking note of.

@Land Dry explain this comment
Bit of a non test then really isn't it if you've not even got a competitive rival? Did Renault sponsor this?
Stuart Middleton
Agreed
it was sponsored
The is not the top model of the i30 N
How can this be competetive
Unreasonable
The same when in other test, they compare the Megane RS EDC without Cup specs against the i30N Performance, Type-R, Cupra.....
And had they performed that test with the same driver, on the same circuit as this one, we could have drawn some actual conclusions.
this is neither the "performance version" for the megane, Trophy is... And this is probably not the "ultimate" version they will do, wait for a trophy-R ...
Renault owner here pissed off...
(2012 megane rs) I wanted to genuinely see lap times etc -_-
What a waste.
Why bring the base model i30n? Does anyone even buy that instead of the performance version?
Ghepardo GTS
I don’t know what’s the point of this video???
The is base model
How can this be a fair comparison
No, Hyundai built thousands of base Ns that they know they can't sell. Genius.
Its only the Base Renault Model the trophy Comes..
The base Renault would be the standard 280 without the Cup Chasis pack, if they wanted this to be fair they'd either have brought a performance N or a base 280 without the Cup Chasis. This is just a completely biased test in favour of one car.
Kerr Wharrie the megane would win either way
So you go for the cup version of the megane and not for the Performance i30, pointless video, not even watch it.
Try the Performance, but then against the trophy please ;)
I wanna see BMW M3 vs Audi A4 2.0 diesel
Track battle between normal cars would be nice. For example Focus vs Astra vs Golf vs i30 with evenly matched engines.
The I30N Performance should have been used as a fair comparison.... Looked forward to seeing the test but this is one sided.
Imagine a larger track, the Megan just has had years and years of refining it's performance
so the car with 30 horses more and an LSD is quicker on track, mind blown...
so we have the right to compare the Golf R 310 HP against the Megane RS 280 HP, 30 HP more! but not the Hyunday i30N with the Mégane !!
salty af
Who is thumbing this up? Renault PR? Awful comparison. LSD vs no LSD on a track . Gee I wounder how this will turn out....
I find using the base i30n a bit disturbing although you were quite fair to mention the inbalance few times
