Great review, thanks! As for the focus breathing, for a 12mm focal length, I think it's not moderate but heavy focus breathing! This, combined with the heavy Chromatic Aberration makes it a non lens for videography. Great for photo's though!
Saw your Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 review. Seems both this samyang ad 12 f/2 & tamron is softer at wide end only in corner. Whereas samyang solve chromatic abbreviations only ay f/2.8 for closeup. Even at f/8 tamron is not as sharp as expected at 11mm.

I have owned both the Sigma 16 1.4 and the original Samyang 12 2.0 and unless you really need a wider field of view and an overall smaller and lighter lens, the Sigma is miles ahead of both the OG and the new Samyang 12 mm. The Sigma is way brighter, it can produce much better bokeh and the overall optics are excellent, it exhibits far less chromatic aberrations and it also controls flaring way better than both Samyang lenses. Another thing to mention, maybe they fixed it on the new Samyang lens but on the old one, the lens hood was causing an obscene amount of vignetting, this is something that Christopher somehow has not mentioned in his original review
Why am I getting so much of focus breathing from this lens on my A5100 for video as oppose to Sigma 16mm which has good AF. There is no firmware information of this lens on its official site. Did I do anything wrong, can anyone help? =(
Do you think it is disturbing to the extend that it renders the video footages unusable? (I mainly do videos with it) I wonder whether it is just due to older camera body (A5100) and whether I should upgrade to the newer APSC bodies to counter this issue.
I’m thinking this could easily replace my Sigma 16mm f/1.4 as my everyday lens. My only nit with the Sigma is its size. This new Samyang is considerably smaller in comparison!
Sigma 16 is an amazing lens but hated the size and weight of it for being a prime. Sold it and purchased the new Samyang 12mm, should be arriving in a couple days. I'm excited for it!
@@DennisMeetsWorld I'm debating this or the Tamron 11-20mm F/2.8. Overall much better lens, better corner sharpness, better focus breathing, no chromatic aberrations. But it's also another 400 bucks. Surprisingly you can get it for 100 off on eBay and it's brand new. But honestly for what I want to use it for, which is basically UA-cam and streaming, I feel like this is more than enough.
@@TriWaZe I've been looking into the tamron 11-20mm as well but I already own the Sony 10-18mm and I love it, just hate that it's only f4 and it's not weather sealed. Picked up the samyang so I could pair it with my tamron 17-70mm for some wider landscape shots, vlogging & a lowlight lens when we go hiking & camping where the Sony 10-18mm and it's slow aperture and lack of any weather sealing would be pretty limiting.
If i remember correctly, that zeiss lens is fairly sharp, and good for astro. But the AF was slow and less accurate compared to sony offerings at that time. The motor was noisier too. Not too bad of a lens in terms of optical performance; but as a total package, at that price (still double compared to this samyang AF 12mm) I just think it doesn’t make much sense.
@@saifaldin_ Thank you so much for your answer! I do have one and i agree with everything you said. Very sharp and great overall, but the AF is noisy and the price only makes sense if you buy it used. What i see now, the samyang is a bit less sharp but the autofocus is better.
@@matijasajko1 I imagine the samyang will be quiet sharp as well when stopped down to f2.8 (at least in the centre). Like most things, it comes down to individual use cases. For some people, absolute sharpness is the target, for others the quality of bokeh might be more important. I personally look at the overall package, taking into consideration the AF performance, size & weight, and characteristics when manual focusing (for certain lenses).
The manual version which is the same with chromatic aberration is by far the best wide angle astro lens for apcs. It is relatively easy to correct later.
@@patrick.771 f2 but I will probably start stopping it down when I'm on a tracker just for a little better corners. In all honesty, even though it's a good lens, I'm moving to sony FE soon because of the great astro glass they have come out with.

Hey Christopher. Please excuse my comment which not actually concerns this video. Have I been missing your review of the Samyang 85 1.4 AF on the R5? If not: do you contemplate to do such a review? And finally even my wife loves the sound of your voice and your English... all my best wishes for you and your family.
Yes, not easy deciding between these two. In general, i would say that the Sigma is better corrected in camera, and has less shortcomings at larger apertures. However, these advantages comes at a cost: almost twice as heavy compared to the Samyang.
@@saifaldin_ yup sure. Its still not too heavy imo though. As I see it for landscape and astro the sigma is a no brainer, because ut is very easy to tale multiple pictures and merge them together to get the look of the samyang - I tried that yesterday. Plus with this method it has the advantage of having an even better resolution. Xou always can stitch and get a wider field of view woth an wide angle but you will never be able to zoom in to an ultrawide pciture and see it in full resolution vompared to an wide angle. Its fairly simple, really: Imo you only need this focal length, if: - you are lazy and dont want to stitch the pictures to get the ultra wide angle look -> you want a straight out of the camera ultra wide angle picture - you want to see your compositions before you take the picture - you want to film video in ultrawide - you want to do ultra wide street photography Also keep in mind that the Iso doubles from f1.4 to f2 ! :0 Oh and the sigma definitly is the sharper one of the two 🤷♂️ So yeah I guess I will keep my Sigma 16, cause it is fairly easy to emulate an ultra wide angle with an wide angle. Idk if this was helpful to you - those are just my thoughts 🤷♂️ If you want to know/see what exactly I mean by emulating jsut ask. 🤷♂️

Yes. Waiting for CF review on the samyang 24mm 1.8. If its good enough on aps-c body, I might buy one in the future.
Is it better than the 1018?
This can be nice for apsc camera and ocassionally when you need to do real eatste
Please review the new tamron 150-500 when it comes out!
Can I use this Lens on my Sony Alpha R II ? I was thinking that the Lens ist only for APS-C but in this Video he used it on a Sony R II.
Used in crop mode on FF.
Great review as always 👏 Did you hear something about a 12mm af-lens for Fuji-X-mount?
This lens went up for preorder for Fuji X today
There is for Micro 4/3 ?
Is Samyang the same as Rokinon?
Yes, same company.. different branding. I think they use at least 4 names.
Samyang in Europe/Asia/Oceania, Rokinon in NA
This has just been released for Fuji mount.
Can I use it in crop mode on full frame?
Yes! Is a 12mm F2 in my Sony zve-10 ( aps-c camera) and in my Full frame A7iv using crop mode is an equivalent 18mm F2.8
Why am I getting so much of focus breathing from this lens on my A5100 for video as oppose to Sigma 16mm which has good AF. There is no firmware information of this lens on its official site. Did I do anything wrong, can anyone help? =(
Here is the focus breathing you can expect: 01:43
Do you think it is disturbing to the extend that it renders the video footages unusable? (I mainly do videos with it) I wonder whether it is just due to older camera body (A5100) and whether I should upgrade to the newer APSC bodies to counter this issue.
@@gigihanmandarin That's up to you. It wouldn't particularly bother me
I’m thinking this could easily replace my Sigma 16mm f/1.4 as my everyday lens. My only nit with the Sigma is its size. This new Samyang is considerably smaller in comparison!
Thats my issue with the Sigma. I wish it was like half the length and it would be legendary. The thing is quite massive.
How well does the Sigma balance on the Sony? I can't decide whether to get the Samyang or the Sigma.
Hi! If possible, please compare it to the Zeiss Touit 12mm 2.8 for APSC 🥺
@@saifaldin_ Yes. Considering everything, it makes sense to buy the samyang from now on. The price and quality ratio is exceptional.
Is this lens even useable for astro when there are bad corners and lots of cromatic aberration at F2?
Someone here experience with it? :)
The manual version which is the same with chromatic aberration is by far the best wide angle astro lens for apcs. It is relatively easy to correct later.
@@matthewmanzi9504 and do you use it at F2 then or do you stop it down to 2.8?
@@patrick.771 f2 but I will probably start stopping it down when I'm on a tracker just for a little better corners. In all honesty, even though it's a good lens, I'm moving to sony FE soon because of the great astro glass they have come out with.
@@matthewmanzi9504 thanks and all the best for that!
I wish Nikon would allow other manufacturers to use their mount too :)
@@patrick.771 yeah I looked at the nikom FF mirror less but it is devoid of any good astro lenses. At least I'm not sure of any. Their 20 1.8 is terrible for coma. Sony bodies are lacking IMO but their lenses and the third party lenses are great
So good sunstars gonna wait fuji version
Hey Christopher. Please excuse my comment which not actually concerns this video. Have I been missing your review of the Samyang 85 1.4 AF on the R5? If not: do you contemplate to do such a review? I'm looking forward 😊. By the way: I'm a great fan of what you are doing. I bought the lens for my R due to your review 😎. Great decision. And finally even my wife loves the sound of your voice and your English... all my best wishes for you and your family.
I might do that review some time in the future :-)
A shame it isn't for Canon M.
This lens came absolutly unexpected and I am really unsure wether I should keep my sigma 16mm or get this lens.
They did an awesome job :O
Its fairly simple, really:
Imo you only need this focal length, if:
- you are lazy and dont want to stitch the pictures to get the ultra wide angle look -> you want a straight out of the camera ultra wide angle picture
- you want to see your compositions before you take the picture
- you want to film video in ultrawide
- you want to do ultra wide street photography
Also keep in mind that the Iso doubles from f1.4 to f2 ! :0
Oh and the sigma definitly is the sharper one of the two 🤷♂️
So yeah I guess I will keep my Sigma 16, cause it is fairly easy to emulate an ultra wide angle with an wide angle.
Idk if this was helpful to you - those are just my thoughts 🤷♂️
If you want to know/see what exactly I mean by emulating jsut ask. 🤷♂️
The fujis please !
