    The original Samyang was an astrophotography wonder, I took a lot of nice pictures of meteors and milky way with it.
    In my scenarios (landscapes, occasionally underwater) I seldom needed an auto focus, just focusing on the infinity was enough.
    But still glad to hear they made a new better and more user friendly version of it.

      Hi tumanov, How did you set the new Smayang AF 12mm to infinity focus? i ask this because there is no markings on the lens? Im about to purchase it but i was stuck if to take the AF or the Manual lens. in few days time planning to take some milky way. Thank you in advance for the advise.

      @@christianevangelista4562 hi, Christian. In nighttime it's easy: you choose a distant source of light, it may be a star or distant lamp, then use maximum focus magnification on camera and manually focus on it. That's it. You'll need to do it anyway with either lens, because autofocus doesn't work at night and doesn't help focusing on stars.
      In daytime you choose a distant object and also manually focus on it using camera focus magnification. I usually set focus magnification on a specific camera button.
      I would recommend an autofocus version though, not for astrophotography, but because:
      a price difference is not so big,
      and version with AF can be used for other purposes. For example, it's really good lens for vlogging.

    I have the original, manual lens, have been using it for months now and it's awesome!! I manually focus most of the time anyway, and I find it to have some real character, and it's been extremely sharp for me, but I shoot 99% video as I'm a filmmaker. Can't speak on still photography, but for video, the manual lens is all kinds of dope, and I'm sure this one is as well, just with autofocus. Cool review, as always, looking forward to more, always.

    I think it is a suitable lens for taking pictures of the Milky Way with a aps c body. The bundled lens and the Sigma 16mm lens were 24mm when converted to a full frame angle of view, so it was a bit disappointing to capture the Milky Way.

    A7C has a direct competitor, the Samyang AF 18mm f/2.8, same size, same price, a bit sharper and way better at CA control. Might be a fun subject for a review since you have an A7C anyway.

  • @Pharesm

    I remember the 16mm Sigma was going to be your choice if you could only have one lens...
    The Sigma's disadvantages are the greater weight, size and not being as wide for Astro adventures.
    The Samyang is small and light and captures more.
    I wonder how much trouble we'd have with chromatic aberrations for a night sky... and vlogging...?

  • @debajyotibiswas998
    @debajyotibiswas998 2 роки тому +2

    Well done, Arthur. This is fantastic .unbiased. review. Stopping down your aperture helps minimize Chromic aberration. Shooting wide open creates purple fringing. I generally use f7.1 to f11 instead of using F/2.8 to f5.6 to see aberration is still there in my viewfinder. It seems like a good ultra-wide angle lens and I might give it a try.

  • @avavaviv1

    The deciding factor for me was the weight and size. I have a mirrorless because I don't want to carry that much and the sigma 16mm f/1.4 would be my largest lens which I can't justify given that my use for wide lens is only occasional. So far I was using the set zoom for wide and I didn't use it for anything else. Also note that the pricing in Europe is quite excellent. I paid only about $50 more than I would pay for the manual version.

Since I have the 18-35 and an adapter for it to fit my gf's A6400, I sometimes wonder if she even needs the 16. If anything so that she could have her own lens, much lighter and a little better in low light. More I think about it, it makes no sense to get the 12 AF if I have the Manual F version. I notice the wide angle is different when on photo vs video. It crops in on video. Why is that? Have you suggestions on settings to keep the ultra wide in video mode?

    Thinking about an astro prime lens for my 6600. Samyang 12mm f2 AF or the Sigma 16mm f1.4?

    • @silverdar
      @silverdar 3 роки тому +1

      the sigma 16mm is way way sharper. ask yourself " do I really need to shoot that wide? ". then if you plan on shooting astro you'll be shooting on a tripod so the AF is completely useless because you will be pulling focus manually .

    • @samsen3965
      @samsen3965 3 роки тому +1

      If Astro, then neither. Get non but Samyang/Rokinon 14mm F2.8 FF manual (Preferably in Nikon F mount and adapt it to whatever mount you have or desire. But then you would never go wrong with the original Samyang 12mm F2 manual, like the other choices you quoted.
      This wasn't any emotion-involved opinion, I expressed. This was the most sincere advice you could get from someone who has done it all. Take it or bear with it.

    • @silverdar
      @silverdar 2 роки тому

      @Montañero Paisa the sigma is way sharper than the samyang but of course the samyang is 12mm. the weight of the sigma is not going to be a problem. any decent tripod (250-300$) can handle that weight. for Astrophotography you want to go as wide as possible and retain quality but unfortunately for sony aps-c the options are limited.
      the samyang is designed for Astrophotography but unfortunately it is not super sharp.
      the sigma is wide enough but not perfect for Astro. it is way sharper and offers versatility. you'll be able to use it for regular photography as well.
      you have to choose between wider and sharper. if I had to pick one strictly for Astrophotography it would be the samyang because if you know how to work the scene you can still add sharpening and texture in post.

    • @silverdar
      @silverdar 2 роки тому +1

      @Montañero Paisa well I'm a landscape and street photographer. I don't shoot anything else so I guess I can help. when you go on landscape photography hikes you want to keep yourself as functional and light as possible. I only carry essentials ( tripod, gear, emergency kit, food, clothing layers, tent).
      I shoot sony full frame so in my case for landscape photography I only use the 16-35mm f2.8 GM , 24-70mm f2.8 GM ,100-400mm f4.5/5.6 GM. if you shoot sony aps-c then I would go with the samyang 12mm f2, sony 18-105mm f4 ( if you can afford it go for the sharper 16-55mm f2.8 G), sony 70-350mm f4.5/5.6 G.
      if you can only buy 1 lens and you're on a budget then ... for the sony aps-c system the 18-105mm f4 is "the must have".
      for landscape photography you'll need ND filters and circular polirizers. a CPL, nd8, nd64, nd1000 will be more than enough for 80% of landscape photography. I hope It was helpful.

    • @silverdar
      @silverdar 2 роки тому

      @Montañero Paisa absolutely not !! with a prime lens you're stuck at that focal length and with a 12mm APS-c lens it's gonna be a nightmare. you will only be able to shoot grand vistas. moreover you shoot on a crop sensor and you have to take that into account. your ability to crop decreases exponentially.
      landscape photography is about range. unless you're shooting the milky way you need zoom lenses especially if you want to grab compositions from the distance. just imagine this scenario ... you want to shoot a peak covered in mist/fog/clouds but that peak is 2 miles away from you and you're stuck a 12mm and you can't zoom in on that peak to grab that shot. it would be a drag !!!
      for a sony aps-c sensor I believe that the 16-55mm and the 70-350mm cover all the focal length you need for landscape photography. but since you're on a budget the 18-105mm F4 is the all-around lens that will get the job done. you can buy it second hand for 300$.

    Hmm, well... personally for 400€ I wouldn't buy it because of the mentioned chromatic abberations and corner sharpness. For that price I expect more. Sony lenses in that price range are excellent. I have the older manual model which is ok for 280€. If you use f6.4-f8 most of the time anyways, you don't really need autofocus at 12mm. 400€ for that image quality? Naa, not really.
