    Obviously, not everything in the interior is Mercedes quality and the infotainment is no BMW iDrive, but the value for money is excellent. Mazda is doing a great job building simply good and affordable cars.

    • @sic22l
      @sic22l 7 років тому +2

      Value for money? It costs as much as any other compact crossover. Naturally aspirated engines are a disaster, 2.2l diesels mean much higher running costs in many countries (taxes/insurance rates above 2 liters).

    • @dwergmaster
      @dwergmaster 7 років тому +9

      +sic22l I believe I didn't claim anything with respect to it's price compared to other non-premium compact SUV's. Only that it's good value for money.
      Your claims w.r.t. the engine are bull-shit. I'm not sure in what country you live, but taxes/insurance are always based on power, brand, price and emissions as far as I'm aware.

    • @sic22l
      @sic22l 7 років тому

      It's average value for money (for this class). It's niether cheaper, nor offer more than some other compact crossovers.
      In many EU countries engine displacement matters a lot. In my country both customs tax is much higher above 2 liters (CX-5 is made in Japan), engine size also matters a lot when it comes to insurance rates.
      Gas engines in the CX-5 are a disaster. Especially the 2.0 liter one. It's extremely slow and anemic, it's also pretty thirsty. 1.4 TSI in the Tiguan destroys it in every way, 1.2l turbo in the 3008 feels much livelier as well.

    • @verliebt3465
      @verliebt3465 7 років тому +9

      I doubt you've driven the CX-5 with either the 2.2 diesel or the 2.5 petrol.
      how a car feels is mostly due to torque and bhp/ton and I've driven cars just as heavy with about the same power and I had no complaints about agility, or acceleration. I haven't driven any cx-5 but I've driven a 2016 mazda 6 with the 175 bhp 2.2 diesel, it felt as fast as a bmw 520d.
      I've also driven a mazda 3 with the 120 bhp pretol engine, felt about as agile as a bmw 116i .
      i wouldn't agree that engine size alone makes a huge difference in many countries. maybe in some, but not that many. i know that in Romania the yearly tax is almost tripled if your engine is over 2l but that not in Sweden for example.
      insurance cares more about bhp not the size of the engine, but it matter also where you live, price of the car, your age, what type of home you have, where you keep the car, your job, how much you drive every year, your sex.
      I'd say age, where you live and sex matters the most. engine size might be at the bottom of the list if on the list at all.
      also the tiguan is more expensive if you equip it with the same stuff. Japanese cars have trim levels, European cars have optional extras. to equip a tiguan with the exact same stuff you get in a top trim level mazda, i bet you'll have to spend more money.
      also those tiny engines in the tiguan and 3008 use as much fuel as a bigger naturally aspirated engine with similar bhp.
      Japanese car makers lie much less in their brochures about how much their cars consume, that's why on paper European cars consume less.

    • @sic22l
      @sic22l 7 років тому

      There's one more thing that matters - when that torque is available for you. You have to rev the hell out of the naturally aspirated engine to get some performance.
      I never said anything bad about Mazda's diesel engines. They're good but a bit expensive.
      European cars come in different trims as well. you just don't need to pay a lot of money for the higher trim if you want some specific piece of equipment. In My country CX-5 with 2.5 engine (available in top spec only because of taxation) costs as much as Tiguan 2.0 TSI Highline with DSG and AWD (and 220 hp!). And much more than 3008 2.0 HDI 180HP in the highest GT trim. And it's more expensive to maintain because Mazda dealerships charge a lot of money for their services (apples to every Japanese brand in Europe). When you gather all compact crossovers you'd see that CX-5 is up there with the most expensive ones.
      Those tiny engines in the 3008 or Tiguan are much more dynamic (because of the torque available at low revs) while using about 1l/100km less. And I'm talking about real world consumption (it's the same story with the Mazda 3, with 2.0l engine is uses about 1l/100km more than Peugeot 308 and VW Golf).

    The new CX5 is definitely one of the best in its class. The design is very sleek, and from what I have read in UK press reviews it's still one of the most rewarding to drive in this segment, carrying on where the first generation left off.

  • @spikeytop8982
    @spikeytop8982 5 років тому +4

    Took ownership of a UK spec cx5 2.0 sport nav+ auto 165bhp in Snowflake white on 1/3/19.
    The good points: Extremely well put together cabin and quality trim, puts me in mind of BMW & Mercedes. Seat leather is of a good quality and seats are supportive and comfortable. Road noise is good for class and a lot better than the Honda CRV and Peugeot 3008. The Bose sound system is very good and has a large subwoofer in the floor lining of the boot. I also appreciate having a cd player, not everyone wants to buy down loads of an album they have probably bought umpteen times before! Cabin space is sufficient and rear leg room is fine for us (sub 6ft) The external styling is beautiful, not too in your face, I would describe it as classy and a cut above its competitors. Boot space is adequate but not class leading. MPG is around 35 with a mix of around town and a small amount of motorway.
    Bad points: 0-60mph is slooow, very under powered in my opinion, the car does not feel like a 2.0 the accelerator peddle takes some pushing down and nothing seems to happen. The auto gear box struggles to select the right gear if you try to pull away fast, 6 gears is just not enough which leads to a jerky change at times and holds on to the gear slightly too long. The satnav is poor with graphics that are basic and years out of date, honestly you can buy a plug in that gives better quality and features. One last gripe, the petrol engine noise can only be described as a whine, it reminds me of a fake electric engine noise.
    Overall I would give this car 6.5 out of 10. A lovely looking car, quality interior but the drive fails to deliver.

    Wow. USB slots have 2.1A. That's excellent! Love the options and it's still quite an affordable car. Leaving out all the special designelement exterieur options and interieur options (I like cloth more anyways. Sadly sunroof only comes with leather package), but going for full technology and best engine in the highest trim level brings the price to 38k Euros (that has heated backseats). That's quite a decent price for what you get. Full comfort, lots of space, sadly not so good passenger space but it's ok ... Decent fuel consumption for this engine and the weight this car has, etc.
    It's no surprise that Mazda is quite successful with their cars in the European market, because they do everything right.

    Great review! The cx5 is a nice car with good quality impressions. I have a Mazda 6 with the 2,2 liter diesel 175hp and I really like the car. I suggest the cx5 is even better than the 6. The only thing that annoys me is that the car doesn’t lock automatically when driving so someone can open your door when driving. You have to lock manually every time you start to drive.

    I drive a 2017 CX-9 Signature with the 2.5 turbo petrol engine. Its very impressive, especially regarding torque figures. I left GM recently, and I did not enjoy their AFM cylinder deactivation. If I were to drive a CX-5 with the ability to deactivate two cylinders, I would want to be in complete control of that process.

    Really great review as always Thomas! Very nice car. Very limited options: the UK online configurator reveals only one petrol, a 2.0 2WD manual; no petrol auto. Can't get BLIS with the petrol (on either trim). You need the top trim and a diesel to opt for BLIS. HUD on top trim only, but top trim you can't get cloth seats, leather only. ACC only on top trim diesel auto AWD and black leather - strangely not with 'Stone' leather! You can't get pale cloth interior, only coal-house black! (Our new CX-3 Sport Nav has BLIS and pale interior, is a petrol automatic, has a HUD, and is cheaper than a CX-5. And we love it!). Many thanks Thomas.

    I think Mazda made a huge mistake by not offering their 250 HP 2.5L turbo from the CX-9 as an option in the new CX-5.

      Your wish has been granted. I've had a new Signature with that engine for about 3 weeks now and it is pretty darn amazing. The turbo engine and six speed tranny work together perfectly. With the torque the engine produces six speeds is ample.

    I have a 2009 Honda Element. I ❤️❤️❤️my Element, but it is a very bare-bones vehicle, with no luxury or high technology features whatsoever. Three days ago I picked up a new 2018 CX-5 Touring as a rental (and I do mean new because when I got it from the rental company the vehicle only had 98 miles showing on the odometer). While I have no reference point to compare it to other current compact SUV's, I am very impressed with the Mazda. It is smooth, quiet, and very comfortable. The cabin looks and feels very high quality, easily as good as my mother's (old) 2004 Lexus. My only "gripe" is that with so much cabin tech I am still looking through the owners manual and diddling with buttons and dials trying to figure it all out. Also, it lacks Apple CarPlay, which would be nice to have since the car is not equipped with the optional navigation installed.

    I own the car and I never get to know at what speeds is the cylinder deactivation is working. It would have been better if it displayed it in the infotainment system like the hybrid cars. The dealership told me it works only at 40 km/h and 80km/h. Not sure if anyone drives at those speeds constantly.. I would personally think it works between those speeds.

    Seeing a ton of these in Los Angeles, because of good value and packaging in this segment. About the same size as Discovery sport at 180 and likely to be larger, particularly inside, than the Volvo 40, Jag E-Pace and BMW X1/2 series as they are smaller by nearly 5 inches in size and smaller wheelbase and smaller in the rear seat, but more money.

    It is something I also didn't know, but I found out from an unit converter Android application: there are actually two different power measurement units, the metric horsepower (used in Europe) and the British horsepower (used also in the US). For instance, 100 kW are about 136 metric hp (Europe), or 134 UK hp (USA).

    I am driving this car in Holland now for two weeks. As a driver/consumer I would like to see when the COD is working because you dont feel anything. The car is absolutely great ! Only downside I notice is the absence of normal cruise-control. The adaptive cruise control can sometimes be a little bit anoying. I know in the US they have both options availiable pressing the mode button on the steering wheel. Do you have normal cruise control available in Germany Thomas ? Great review !

    • @autogefuehl

    • @peterbollie
      @peterbollie 7 років тому

      Autogefühl Strange that we in Holland can not choose between CC an ACC. We do have a Limiter mode, which you will never use. I would rather have normal CC option, like in other countries. Would that be possible to have in a software update you think ?

    • @verliebt3465
      @verliebt3465 7 років тому

      on my car the adaptive function of the CC disables itself if the plastic in front of the sensor is dirty or has frost on it. though most of the times it warns me about this, it still works.
      my bmw wont let me choose either between normal or radar guided CC, or i don't know how to do it, but you can make it less annoying if you reduce the distance it must maintain to the vehicle in front.
      in my car it's most annoying on it's furthest setting, though i find it keeps me the safest also, the car is very prudent in that setting, first setting for example feel dangerous, it keeps only 10-15 meters to the car in front i think and driving at motorway speeds with so little distance in-between doesn't make me feel safe.

    I think it's funny how Thomas described both the Mazda3 and CX-5 as being comfort-oriented and not that sporty when reviewers in North America and Australia (and to a lesser extent, the UK) typically rate Mazdas as being the number one or two most sporty cars in their segments. What exactly is Thomas comparing them to? BMWs and Jaguars? The whole idea of Mazda these days is to be more fun to drive than their price competitors ('Zoom Zoom'), of which they tend to do a good job while making compromises in some other areas (NVH is the most notorious, which they are addressing, along with a lack of high power engine configurations).

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  6 років тому

      +BruceLeedar maybe caus us and australia also review more soft suspension cars and we rather get more sport suspension cars. That's rather typical for us vs eu market

    • @BruceLeedar
      @BruceLeedar 6 років тому

      That might be the case for the US, but Australia typically gets quite a sporty tune from most manufacturers, especially those that have a local engineering division (GM/Holden, Hyundai/Kia, etc.). Notable example is the Opel Astra, which is much firmer and sporty as the 'Holden' Astra, according to Australian journalists who've driven both.
      For interest's sake, what price-competitive models are considered more sporty in Europe than the CX-5 or Mazda3?

      Correct. Mazda is developing these under the SKYACTIVE name. Darum sind unsere Videos auf Englisch, das ist der kleinste gemeinsame Nenner.
      Die meisten deutschen Videozuschauer verstehen auch Englisch, aber fast alle anderen verstehen kein Deutsch. Insofern ist es nur logisch, die Videos auf Englisch anzubieten, was auch sehr gut ankommt.Wir würden uns freuen, wenn du auf Deutsch unsere Text-Berichterstattung verfolgst und auch hier unsere englischen Videos.
