The Big 318 To 360 Mopar Engine Swap Guide!

  • On today's episode, we cover a topic that I have been seeing a lot of questions about from newer members in the Mopar groups lately - what particular things need to be changed to swap from a 318 to a 360? There seems to be a good bit of misinformation out there as to what is really different, and what is really important, so I'm here to set the record straight as best as I can. As always, I can almost guarantee I forgot something important... Welcome to DDG land, enjoy your stay. This basic information applies to performing an engine swap between various small block LA series engines in your classic Dodge, Plymouth, or Chrysler product.

      So… what I’ve been doing since the beginning of the channel? 😁 ok, I know I’ve been a little heavy on “revival” type stuff lately, and opinion pieces trying to make a point about spending money on these cars. Those videos have also gotten way more attention than (almost) anything else I’ve done. But these things come as they come. The weather’s nice, the iron is hot, and these cars keep showing up. I have a lot of different things I want to do. In fact, I just finished recording my first podcast type history episode. I don’t know that it will do well at all, but it’s something I have long wanted to try. The bedrock this channel is built on is Mopar technical guides, and specifically electrical guide videos. I will go back and forth between these things - and sometimes, I’ll make silly things like The Corndog Car Chase. I want to make stuff people will watch, but also stuff that I believe in and enjoy, and I definitely don’t want to limit myself to just one thing. Thanks for watching! Lots more coming up.

    Very good and though you talked about the balance being different in detail but you forgot to mention why. 360 has a cast crank and the others a steel crank. Other than that you about covered all the LA points very well. Minor oversight on the crank thingy i am sure. There was a lot to cover.😊 well done. Remember its not rocket science or is it.😂

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  Рік тому +2

      That isn’t exclusively why, but it’s definitely a factor. I don’t think of it that way, because cast crank 273 and 318 are still neutral / internal balance. The cast crank 340 and all 360s are external balance. It’s all about weight, and where that weight is.

      @DeadDodgeGarage So, very good sir.. I'll add my 2cents that not all 340s were cast crankshafts, the early ones 68 -71 were steel from the factory I've had many and have one now, I've also got a 360 in my 90' Dodge truck I swapped from a 318 but now it's internal balanced steel crank in that 360 because i bought it to switch bottom end to internal balance... scat I recall was manufacturer, just a better engine that way and perhaps a lil tuffer to... yes true stock 360s are cast/external balance.... love your material!! 😍 ❤️!!

    Thanks for explaining the difference between a 318 and 360! I always thought they were exactly the same except for cubic inches. I thought a lot about putting a 360 In my 318 74 cuda, but I’ll probably just keep it original and numbers matching and put a 4 barrel on it at some point . I’ve been thinking about a 4 barrel for a while because no parts stores in my area want to carry BBD rebuild kits. I actually had a set of super rare ‘Cuda 360 emblems to put on the hood scoops, but sadly, they went missing when we moved.

    Re: vibrations and externally balanced Mopar LA engines. In 1973 only, 340's received an externally balanced cast crank so their harmonic balancers and torque converters had external balance weights on them, unique to that year's production. I don't know why they thought this was a good idea, but they did it anyway. If your LA rotating assembly has weird vibration issues, check if you have mixed a pre-73 340 forged crank with 1973 340 harmonic balancer & torque converter (or older style harm balancer and/or torque conv on a 73 cast crank). All 3 parts must match and be oriented correctly or it will shake off-idle to 3000 rpm like my 340 did (above that it smooths out but will suffer an early death)

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  Рік тому +1

      The why-they-did was definitely cost cutting, and the fact that they had already lowered the compression and output of the 340 made this acceptable. This was actually in the middle of the 1972 production run, as I understand. It’s similar to the 360, which always had a cast crank, but the weight is unique to the cast crank 340. The 318 also had a cast crank, but with the lighter rotating assembly, they were still able to balance it internally. Not so with the cast 340 and the 360. This video was mostly intended to discuss the important difference between the 318 and 360 for swapping purposes, so I did not get into the particulars of year to year changes, or the late 340. I discuss the history of the 340 in an upcoming history type video about the A-body, but it will probably warrant its own history video at some point.

I have had a really good run of getting the balance weight right - until the 360 swap in my Demon this year. And in my defense on that one, the weight screwed onto it was presumed to be correct for the 360 LA, but pretty clearly isn’t.

    Good video. I think the lower hole on the drivers side for the block to transmission support bar is about 1/2" forward on the 360 vs 318 also. I had to use spacers between the support rod and trans bellhousing. Maybe do another with the cylinder head differences, rod differences, cams, and the different version of water pumps.
    I put the Edelbrock Performer intake (EGR version) on my trucks 360, and found the intake port necks down to the 318 size less than an inch from the gasket surface. I just had to gasket match the port to the 360 size, and only had to go less than an inch into the port.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  Рік тому +1

      That’s a good one - we learned that hole moves somewhat recently on a 340 actually. Frankly, very few cars left on the road have those braces… and that includes all of mine. So I didn’t think to mention it. There are lots and lots of little details like that to be found - I’m really just going for the broad strokes that people need to get swaps like this done successfully. There will definitely be more videos on these engines coming. As long as I’ve got Mopars and a channel, I’ll have a pile of LA engines. Haha.

    Me be in a crafty Mopar nut, with a little work you can take the 360 crank machine it and have it put in a 340 block and you end up with a 392 after everything is said and done😁

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  Рік тому

      I edited out the part where I explain that the 360 crank can be machined to fit in the other blocks. I decided it wasn’t worth mentioning in the context of this video. I’m not sure how you end up at 392 cubic inches though, given that the factory bore of the 340 is only .040 larger than the 360’s. I could see offset grinding the pins and using different rods accounting for a small amount… this is all a moot point in this day and age, where stroker cranks and matched kits are readily available that fit both blocks.

    Good break down of the situation. I wouldn't mind seeing the Magnum version of this video. One clarification I would like to know, you mention the balancing was different from LA to Mag. Does that mean you can't swap a LA flex plate and converter to a Mag and vice versa, like a lot of people will say in various internet places. Or you can't do something like using the Mag flexplate with like a LA converter.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  11 місяців тому

      Basically, if it’s a 318 you can use whatever combination of flex plate and converter as you want as long as there are no weights. The Magnum flex plate is fine, but you will likely have to oval out one torque converter bolt hole. 360 Magnum and 360 LA have different balance weights, and later 360 Magnums have that weight on the flex plate instead of on the converter as LAs and early Magnums did. This change came somewhere in the ‘96-98 range, but I don’t have that nailed down for sure. All of the different flex plates bolt onto any of the engines. You just need to watch the balance weight and use the right one if you’ve got a 360/5.9. The Magnum version of this is definitely coming.

      @DeadDodgeGarage  Рік тому

      Yes, Magnum pattern does not have the offset bolt - that may have started in ‘96 or ‘97 and not at the start of the Magnum run though. Early Magnum 5.9s are still weighed on the converter, and later Magnum 5.9s are weighted on the flex plate. LA 360 and 318 don’t share main bearings. I believe they are supposed to be different lengths, but the 318 rod can be made to work with a combination of bending, threading it all the way out, and in some cases extending it or adding a nut and bolt in the slot to effectively length it. I've got one that's in a 79 Newport ex Texas State Trooper car with only 100,000 miles on it still runs good but car body is rusted out but I've got a 1988 Plymouth Gran Fury with a 318 two barrel ( Texas DOT package car ) that's like new . I use to buy and sell old Mopar Police cars and always wanted to put a 360 in place of the 318 ( with 360 heads ) that came in 1982 through 1989 Diplomats in Plymouth Gran Furys police package cars but never got a round to it.

    Hey one last question! I have a early 90’s 360 I’m going to use my intake and my hooker headers, but I would need to run a electric fuel pump with a regulator I have the sfi flexplate to the tf904 trans and I have the water pump, valve covers, intake seals does it all sound good to swap over? Would I be missing anything?

      Early meaning 90-93, pre-Magnum? If so, all of that will work great, and you will indeed have to run an electric pump. I’m at least fairly sure there will be no eccentric for the fuel pump in there. Truth be told, though, I’ve never looked.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  25 днів тому

      I always go for regular old FelPro gaskets, speed pro rings or whatever I can get my hands on, and ideally Clevite bearings. What upgrades you make really depend on your end goals. Usually when I’m build a 360, my horsepower goals are modest and I just want a nice street performer. A mild performance cam and matched springs are essential - and I highly recommend you buy an old Mopar Performance purple shaft cam with specs that fit your needs. OR use a local cam grinder and get a set of original lifters refaced as well. Do not buy a Comp, or any other off the shelf cam and lifters - unless you will have them checked. You almost certainly need to have this engine over bored by a machine shop, and you will then need a matching set of flat top pistons with valve reliefs. This will raise the compression to something usable. A good port job and valve job in the heads is also time well spent. There is a lot to this, but these are the basic ingredients for acceptable performance.

    Hi, i have a 1995 ram 5.9 Magnum with an automatic transmission, I'm planning to swap to a manual, i found a manual but the only thing is that came out of a 1978 318 engine. Do you think will work? Or do I need something else? Also they are offering me the whole vehicle to do the swap. Thanks!!

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  4 місяці тому

      Don’t do it. No part of that earlier manual swap will fit your truck. Mating the transmission to the engine is relatively easy, but the clutch setups are completely different between the two trucks - pedals are completely different, linkage from the ‘78 is incompatible (the ‘95 would use a hydraulic clutch.) Additionally, the transmission mounting, the shifter setup, and more will not be right - and that’s going to be a four speed without overdrive, most likely an NP435 with an almost useless granny low, so it’s more like a three speed. In the trucks they came in from the factory, they make good sense. In your Ram, trying to install one is a fool’s errand. Look for a stick shift Ram donor instead. If you can find the right parts, it will be great.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  Рік тому +1

      Some factory pumps had a removable pulley. Essentially all replacement pumps have a fixed pulley. It doesn’t matter - they should all work. I believe Mangum pumps is Magnum pumps. You should be able to go to your local parts store and ask them for a pump for a 1998, no problem. One thing though… when you loosen the water pump bolts, you will loosen the timing cover’s pressure on its gasket. It is extremely common for those to start leaking after changing the pump. I always recommend doing both at the same time. I am about to do a timing cover on a Ram on which exactly this happened. Just saying. I’ve got a video on the Magnum timing cover gasket problem if you want to check that out and see what is involved. It kinda sucks… but so does doing a job twice.

      Throwing 360 heads right on a 318 with all else stock is a bad idea, and I don’t recommend that anyone does that.
