I love Johnny's songs, but this is my favorite. I've been there many a day and this song brings back those memories and the half awake peacefulness of taking a stroll after a long weekend to clear your head. And I'm still wearing black for you and everyone else. RIP Johnny.
My 1st Album...always felt sad, at 12, Years-Old, listening. So thankful, still listening to Johnny, Kris Kristofferson, All the Souls, who shared their Souls with US! Loved you, John. Many of us, suffered, with you, on your Walk for Truth!!

Lyrics: Well, I woke up Sunday mornin' With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad So I had one more for dessert Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes And found my cleanest dirty shirt Then I washed my face and combed my hair And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day I'd smoked my mind the night before With cigarettes and songs I'd been pickin' But I lit my first and watched a small kid Playin' with a can that he was kickin' Then I walked across the street And caught the Sunday smell of someone's fryin' chicken And Lord, it took me back to somethin' that I'd lost Somewhere, somehow along the way On a Sunday mornin' sidewalk I'm wishin', Lord, that I was stoned 'Cause there's somethin' in a Sunday That makes a body feel alone And there's nothin' short a' dyin' That's half as lonesome as the sound Of the sleepin' city sidewalk And Sunday mornin' comin' down In the park I saw a daddy With a laughin' little girl that he was swingin' And I stopped beside a Sunday school And listened to the songs they were singin' Then I headed down the street And somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringin' And it echoed through the canyons Like the disappearin' dreams of yesterday On a Sunday mornin' sidewalk I'm wishin', Lord, that I was stoned 'Cause there's somethin' in a Sunday That makes a body feel alone And there's nothin' short a' dyin' That's half as lonesome as the sound Of the sleepin' city sidewalk And Sunday mornin' comin' down
I remember Kris Kristofferson watching Johnny from the balcony of the Ryman Auditorium as Johnny performed the song Kris had written to a live nationwide television audience of the Johnny Cash Show, and smiling in relief and admiration when Johnny resisted the intense network pressure to change the word “stoned” in his lyrics, a word considered too hot for prime time in the early seventies. That recording, complete with audience applause at the end, was the one used on the release of the record that immediately went on to be a major hit on both country and pop radio stations, insuring Cash would be as relevant in the changing culture of the seventies had he had been since the mid-fifties. Cash singing + Kristofferson writing was pure music magic. 🧨
Many, these days, have no coming down, they are already on the sidewalk Sunday morning! Acts 20:35 - I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Lyrics:
Well, I woke up Sunday mornin'
With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad
So I had one more for dessert
Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes
And found my cleanest dirty shirt
Then I washed my face and combed my hair
And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day
I'd smoked my mind the night before
With cigarettes and songs I'd been pickin'
But I lit my first and watched a small kid
Playin' with a can that he was kickin'
Then I walked across the street
And caught the Sunday smell of someone's fryin' chicken
And Lord, it took me back to somethin' that I'd lost
Somewhere, somehow along the way
On a Sunday mornin' sidewalk
I'm wishin', Lord, that I was stoned
'Cause there's somethin' in a Sunday
That makes a body feel alone
And there's nothin' short a' dyin'
That's half as lonesome as the sound
Of the sleepin' city sidewalk
And Sunday mornin' comin' down
In the park I saw a daddy
With a laughin' little girl that he was swingin'
And I stopped beside a Sunday school
And listened to the songs they were singin'
Then I headed down the street
And somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringin'
And it echoed through the canyons
Like the disappearin' dreams of yesterday
On a Sunday mornin' sidewalk
I'm wishin', Lord, that I was stoned
'Cause there's somethin' in a Sunday
That makes a body feel alone
And there's nothin' short a' dyin'
That's half as lonesome as the sound
Of the sleepin' city sidewalk
And Sunday mornin' comin' down
Voz inigualável, linda!!
