I noticed a sign for $52 a month mortgages on a new suburban home. Inflation makes that around $583 today. You can't rent a one-bedroom apartment for that. Sadly.
Did you use one of the online inflation calculators to get that number? If so, I do that, too, while watching films from the 1940s and 1950s. Or, if I'm lazy, I just multiply everything by 10 for a rough estimate. I was watching Bogart's "The Big Sleep" (1946?) and he was making a phone call to a nearby town, yet the operator asked for 55 cents. That's more than 5 bucks in today's dollars! The Bell System had a legal monopolistic racket more profitable than any operated by organized crime! 🤣
And they thought they had problems. Notice in the beginning of the movie he basically said nobody could afford to their home and at one point it was said everyone was in 25 years of debt.

This film came out when I was 5 months old (Oct. '57) most likely shot that summer. It gives me a state-of-the-art look at beautiful Southern California (where I was born/raised and still live) to the terrible disaster it is now. That aside, it's also a look at the gritty, dark side of the '50s where after so many bad years of The Depression and World War II, life could finally be "perfect", but of course it wasn't. There was a lot of pressure to BE perfect, which led to a lot of drinking and abuse. Furthermore, many of the men had PTSD from World War II, and were expected to 'move on from it' without the help they needed, with terrible results this film depicts. Unfortunately (I believe), many men in this era would probably reject such help if offered, as being weak, even though it wouldn't have been.

It’s nice to see Pat Hingis when he was still fresh and young. I’d only been familiar with him as a rumpled, often disaffected, middle aged man or older.
This is very true. He was an excellent character actor I strongly associate with '70s crime dramas, like 'Barnaby Jones'. Pat often played characters that were pleasant and meant well, but could be lethal if he was cornered. All his work at various ages and stages was always top notch.
This was cast so well. Perhaps not in the roles we're used to them playing but they all played them well together. A nice ensemble. Seems very much like a slice of 1950s life in a new suburb. Recently moved into a 55 and over cookie-cutter house neighborhood. It's basically the same neighbor thing now as it was then. An eclectic diversity that comes together and gets along for the most part. If you need ANYTHING you've just gotta let somebody know and somebody will be there.
