This is truly a wonderful movie. Serious, but at times it turns almost into a musical, and this is masterfully accomplished. It is loosely based on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Which becomes very clear towards the end of the film. George Raft is Prince Charming, and Sylvie Sidney is Snow White This is masterfully directed, photographed, and acted. Silvia Sidney has always been one of my favorite actresses. I met her once. I saw her in a stage play in Bangor Maine. I went backstage after her performance. I was her only visitor. She was packing her suitcase as she was already heading to another town to perform, and had only a little time to catch her train. It was, and is, a memorable meeting for me even though it was a very long time ago, it is my fairytale, except that it is a true experience, and a great memory.

Please tell me that these characters are not authentic! What a feral, disgusting bunch of people.

This movie hit home with me. 2024 I'm 62 yrs old and my adult children demanding I sell the house I was born and raised. It's been in the family since 1820. I am heart broken. This movie gave me Hope!!! God will help the poor!

I was born in 1954 and remember how many of the movies I saw growing up through the fifties and sixties had dark and somber themes like this. It wasn't all Leave it to Beaver and Father Knows Best. Racism was rampant, there were gangs and organized crime as well as homelessness and poverty. Nostalgia has a way of cloaking it all.

The plot description above is dead wrong on several counts. Maybe it was one of those AI hallucinations. For one thing, Jack Kelly and Hildy Parks play the married couple, and the husband's character's name is Gene, not Alfred. John Cassavetes plays the leader of the crime gang. But thanks for uploading! It was a great crime drama all the way through.

This looks like more of a melodrama than a noir, but the casting looks great for the script. *edit* Well, they cleaned up the violent SA by killing off the perpetrator, and his disgraced widow loses the house in the final scene. Wrapped up with a bow.
