Out of all the magic tutorials out there, this is the most important of all. I bought one of the books he mentioned (the royal road to card magic) and I was blown away after reading the first 2 pages of it! the simplest things used in magic!
I just started reading it myself today and I am blown away by the motivational and inspirational writing after reading the preface and introduction. Now I am on the first chapter and enjoying every moment as I am reading it. Chris is so accurate in his video here that the books contain a magic of their very own. I am so excited to be starting my Magic journey even though I am now retired and in my 50's.
@@BaritoneUkeBeast4Life 👍 Hey man, cool: I too am in my fifties and have also like you just started learning magic! I've been a musician since my teens and I'm trying something new. Do you experience frustration with learning card handling? I get a bit impatient with myself sometimes but suppose that's only human. I hope you enjoy it and have fun 🙂 Regards Bernard Melbourne
This video has been incredible thank you! I brought Royal Road to Card Magic since you mentioned it in a previous video and now have a few more to keep me busy, fingers crossed I improve! Great video again Chris!
1. Quit apologizing for long videos. 2. You should definitely make more videos like this recommending books for different genres of magic. 3. I have tried to watch other magicians' tutorials, but keep coming back to you because you seem more genuine, you break things down perfectly step by step and it feels like you actually WANT to teach people you don't know. I'm referring to you as my "Unknown Mentor" as I have already learned more in the 5 days since discovering you than I ever had in the previous years I would try to learn card tricks. So you're mentoring me, and thousands of others, and you don't know us. Thank you.
I love videos that teaches us how to become better at magic. Most people don't often know how to start or practice and this video was really helpful!!! (Well super helpful to me at least) :)
man, so glad to find someone that appreciates magic literature. most magicians i speak with dont't appreciate the possiblilities of books. love your channel.
great!!! now we want the mentalism books!!!!!!! i 'm reading the first three books right now (royal road and expert card technique and erdnase), totally worth it!
This video is the reason why I do magic. I love learning from books because of your information. Drawing room Deceptions. That was just over 2 years ago. Now I have 143 books about magic. You are not the only one I have watched, but I did learn the most from you. Thank you for what you symbolize in the magic Community. You should come out with a book of your own.
I agree 100%. UA-cam is great, but the books can't be beat. I literally just started working with card tricks last week. Thanks for a great channel. Keep up the good work!
You are spot on Chris! Magicians need to read MORE :) Great book suggestions all. Drawing Room Deceptions and Mnemonica are two of my favorites as well that I reference regularly. I would say that 90% plus of the effects in my professional repertoire are from books!
Books are awesome. I just got into magic books and I regret I didn't buy them earlier. What I would love to see on your channel is this video but then with books about magic theory, psychology and things like that.
thank you so much for making this video. im 18 and just started to get into Magic this summer before college. it is really exciting and a lot of fun. you are the coolest magician I've ever heard of. I was originally inspired by David Blaine when he performed with Jimmy Fallon but your street magic videos are what really excite and inspire me to learn and practice magic. I already ordered the beginner books and can't wait for them to get here to start learning.
totally dig this, I'm just jumping into card magic right now but I would absolutely love a more in-depth video about more book suggestions to help get started and definatley books on the more difficult stuff
Hearing about the books and magicians that beginners like me didn't know existed is super awesome. Keep doing these or go further in depth with one of mentioned books!
13 steps to mentalism and 101 magic secrets revealed are the first 2 magic books I ever bought but I am definitely going to check these out! thanks again Chris!!
Finally! I was waiting for this vid for so long. I always struggled to find a good magic book. Btw jist got my first memento mori deck and i m loving it. Cheers from Poland!
Thanks for this and your beliefs regarding this. You mentioned in a couple of your previous videos that the good stuff is in the books and you mentioned the "Royal Road to Card Magic." I bought the book and holy smokes! That one book revolutionized my card magic and theory. Since then I have been learning mostly from books. Thanks for turning me into the right direction. I complete affirm Ramsay's claim that the best stuff is in the books.
All the yes! I started with books, and came to your channel originally by accident because I wanted to see a certain move in performance to get a better understanding. These are exactly the kinds of things I want to know. THANK YOU, CHRIS!
I was just thinking about what magic books I should get, lol. Also, Chris, one tyour videos are just so amazing, I can't get over how beautiful they are, you are not only an amazing magician, but also awesome at editing
I love videos like this it really increases my collection and gives me resources to look back on. I knew Juan Tamariz had some stuff out but wasn't sure what books would be best. Really helped thank you.
I missed the part of the books to stay away from...but books is definitely something I would like to here you talk more about. Great video. It even made me comment which I never do....
Hello! That is an efficient list! I have read some of those books and many more. Nonetheless, after some years of studying this art, I have come to the following conclusion: If one wants to learn and to master moves, shuffles, sleights, transformations, and color changes, the best way to do so is by following a visual approach. In order to fulfil this objective, I suggest getting these two remarkable DVD tutorials: Daryl's Enciclopedia of Card Sleights (eight volumes) and Ben Salinas' Hot Shot and Card Stunts. Once one manages to control all those techniques on those DVDs, which takes years of practice by the way, one will have sufficient tools to design and to execute a huge repertoire of tricks and illusions. On the other hand, when it comes to learning about the theorical and aesthetic elements behind card magic, books are and will be the path to take. There are two card magic theory books which in my opinion are essential: La Magia de Ascanio - Volume 1 (written in spanish) and Darwin Ortiz's Strong Magic. Perusing those masterpieces will change the way you perform and comprehend card magic. What do you think? I hope my opinion helps.
i know this is an old vid, but you're really good motivational speaker. i have came across your channel for your amazing tutorials. i always had a passion for Cards and fooling the mind if you will. A few years down the road from studying magic i hope to hit the streets of Minneapolis and perform magic and hopefully brighten people day
I'm way late but just wanted to say I love watching your videos! This one made me realize I need to go back and read through all the books I have to find that gem. Thanks for the inspiration Chris!
Books are the best. Right now im trying to build up my own little library. I would love to see more book related videos! Keep up the good work Chris :).
Time to go buy 28838383729281278494932729 books and read them front to back and back to front while practicing front to back back to front, love it especially the intro
@Chris Ramsay.. dude I love your channel! I think it's awesome you're full time youtube. even when I'm not interested in a video you post I still like it and watch the ads to hook you up! 😂 keep up the good work!
Love these types of videos, I actually was able to grab Expert at the Card Table (black hardcover), can’t wait for it to arrive. Definitely put out some more of your recommendations, love hearing about what type of stuff you’re into. Thanks.
Got Royal Road and Expert card Technique shortly after this video, really loving them and practicing every day, thanks for the vid Chris it helped me out
When i saw performing dynamo,David Blaine and criss angel I always feel that magic is only for them I can't do magic tricks like them. But ur tutorial give inspiration to me.Its give me confident and happiness after seeing ur videos and tutorial .
Extremely helpful... I've already read the beginner books and they've helped me a lot... I love your channel. I also use the decks you use. big big fan🖤
I don't have a lot of books. But a lot of the books I have are right there on your shelf. w00t! I like books because I tend to put notes in the columns that I'd never see again if I did the electronic version of that. Also... I'm a memdeck guy, so I've read mnemonica through and through a few times. Ironically I don't even use his technique. But I love the things Juan puts around his effects to make them more plausible. Come to think of it, I probably mark off his convincers more often than the effects themselves!
Hell yeah I love this type of videos 😆 this is the most helpful video done by chris ramsay . Just keep advising us with these books . That's what I need " books "
My library is starting to get legitimate. Books are the best. And it's so much fun when you discover a trick hidden in the middle of some old book that's just mindblowing. It's like there's hundreds of tricks, and you're going - okay, key card, double lift, peek, HOLY WHAT IS THAT!! That's the best feeling ever.
Thanks for this! I've been trying to compile a list of books I need to work through, and its nice when other magicians share their book lists. Definitely some on here that I haven't heard mentioned elsewhere! Any chance this is the first in a series - maybe one for Mentalism and for Coins?
First watch, never see before so apologies if you've covered what I'm gonna say: True comment: an effect can "probably sell for 29.99 as a single download but the book itself will cost you $50 and you get like 20 or 30 effects out of it". FINALLY SOMEONE WHO REALISES THE VALUE OF BOOKS.
i just picked up if an octopus could palm all the palms are extremely diffuclt but they look so smooth and so natural thanks for the suggestions going to pick up more today
You want him to tell you how to present one of the MANY tricks he's made tutorials on and then ALSO tell how to present it, step by step, to make it your own? Wow that's adorable!
Thanks for this. I always love getting book suggestions from other people and I definitely would like to get some more from suggestions from you on other magic books. I see you have Derren Brown's Pure Effect, which is one I've been wanting to get for a long time. I'm digging your magic man, keep it up.

You are spot on Chris! Magicians need to read MORE :) Great book suggestions all. Drawing Room Deceptions and Mnemonica are two of my favorites as well that I reference regularly. I would say that 90% plus of the effects in my professional repertoire are from books!

It’s getting that book that’s tricky!
I love reading magic books! Reading Writing is one of my favorite along with 13 Steps To Mentalism because it's my first magic book ever
I really thank you so much for the help you have given me! I would like another video which talks about books to learn mentalism!
