People need to stop considering their mobile devices as "phones"... they are small, expensive computers! Let's use them to the best of their ability. As soon as I find a great remote program for my desktop harddrive, DeX will become my daily driver.
Do you mean to access and download/upload files to your desktop by wireless or via the network? cause there are plenty of things for that. I'm a big fan of good old FTP, so you just setup your pc as a FTP Server then you can use one of hundreds of ftp android apps to tap in and download or upload whatever you want.

Kine Video Editor is the best android video editor by far, It is subscription based. I use power director and I actually really enjoy it. Its the best editor that can support 4k for a one time purchase. I work in IT but I am in charge of creating our advertising videos we upload to our website and facebook. It doesnt take anything demanding or crazy but its nice to be able to edit them right on my phone.
Thanks David for sharing. When you shoot a video in landscape mode with the Camera it will display as an inverted portrait on the monitor. But when you play the video it will display correctly in landscape mode on the monitor. I don't know why it should be like that, it looks like a glitch in the Samsung Dex.
I alternate between Linux on Dex and regular Dex. Terminus is a really good Android option for ssh into my servers. But if I'm going to need to inspect chrome a lot or need a real desktop browser for something then I'll switch to Linux. The problem with Linux is that it took me a while to install different desktops
Sadly...Samsung have abandoned Linux on Dex, as they begin rolling out Android 10 (not sure if there's a technical issue, or whether they just don't have the resources behind this to support it going forward). Upon visiting the Linux on Dex webpage, visitors are now greeted with the message that the app will cease to function in Feb 2020 and that they will no longer accept/service new requests for the Linux on Beta app.
Thanks for making this video. I have a trip coming up and I would prefer not to have to carry a laptop to edit and upload video from an action camera. I will definitely use your advice as I explore the potential. Perhaps new software has become available since you made this video. 👍
Amazing work, amazing video and amazing dex. I'm planning to sell my desktop to buy a 4k giant tv + samsung phone these days... please give me some idea @david
GLasiore Thanks! I wish I could give you a TV recommendation... not really my field! If you have a Samsung phone though, I suppose a Samsung TV would mean you are most likely to be able to stream video to it wirelessly, which could be useful.
Thanks David for the video. Good to see what's actually possible with Dex. I wonder if Dex is possible on s9 with just Hdmi-usbC cable ( no Dex pad ) *suggestion: next time please try to put a more peaceful background music ;)
Bought a bad ass 27" dell monitor S2719DC. Powers the phone through USBC but Dex does not show on the monitor. Also pulse sound coming from phone audio, ANY IDEARS???
Hmm that's a strange one. It could be a hardware failure. 😔 But first install Smart Things (app on the Play Store), then turn everything off and on again. Make sure the monitor is on the usb-c input. And replug a few times!
Exporting this 15 minute video in 4k took about an hour, and then had some issues with the file size (truncated at 4GB). At 1080p it took about 15 minutes (so almost real-time!).
Hi, thank you for your video. I am now considering getting a monitor or a laptop. I have a Samsung Tab A with S Pen for daily non-heavy work. Using a Note 8, plan to upgrade to Note 11 next year. My 6 years old laptop is deteriorating. I don't do\ any heavy work on my laptop, just occasionally adding subtitles for my friend's video. May I know which model of monitor you have? It looks so complete with all the ports. Another question is, does the phone being charged while plugged in with the HDMI cable? If it is, how fast/slow the charging is? Can you use the S Pen and phone screen and drawing pad for drawing app/Samsung Notes? Sorry that I asked lots of question. Thank you.
Hey man. The monitor is the LG 27uk850, although it's at least a year old now, there may be a newer model. The phone will charge if it's getting power by usb-c, either with this kind of monitor (which takes a video and audio signal down, and provides power up), or via a dongle which does the same. There are many dongles now which can supply power and break out into an HDMI port. I think it supports fast charging.
The phone can run apps on its own while you use dex on the monitor for something else. Example: you can have youtube or be working on a word document on dex. And do the video call on the device itself
I've had nothing but success editing video's on my S10, DEX via rush, rather than the annoying crashes editing or rendering on my PC. (I7 16GB of ram 2GB gpu). I'm combining 5.7k 360 videos (had to set my phone to high performance) 4k drone shots and 4k camera video from my phone flawlessly. While it is limiting no doubt about that, but extremely powerful multi track video editing even picture in picture video's both in 4k work out perfect. It has also quickened my work flow mostly cause of its convenience. Scrubbing through video is so smooth i still cant believe it. If there any tweaks I have to do on my PC I do that there first and then ad it to my project for finalization and rendering. This platform is underrated not only very useful but the best of this type of alternative.
5.7k?! Holy smokes, I'm impressed! That is a pretty hardcore workflow. When I made this video, I had an issue expecting it at 4k and had to settle for 1080p. I guess they got that fixed! Glad to hear of more people using Dex and I hope it continues to grow. Thanks for stopping by. 😁
An excellent video, David. I cannot fathom the few negative comments. I would like to know their reasons. They probably don't like the colour of our T-shirt or size of your monitor.
In the 2020 Big Clash between Huawei and Samsung, a mobile video potential will be one of the major weapons. This includes low noise, 4K 240 fps, 8K 120 fps, shallow DOF, multifocus, accurate color reproduction, optional lenses, AND the editing software. Basically, if Samsung does not develop their own superior video editor, they may follow Apple's marketing position pretty soon.
Funny how fast technology is changing. I watched a video a few days ago of Dex on the new Note 10+ playing on top of Windows using a laptop. It's even possible to drag and drop between the Dex window to the windows of the laptop and vice versa.
The game changer is when DeX mode eventually opens full Windows 10 with full access to all the software available in Windows. The only limit will be the phone's horsepower (and compatibility, etc). I'd fully expect full Adobe Premiere to edit 1080p in a pinch. It may be choppy with much higher render times...but possible. Galaxy Book S is full Windows 10 running on a Snapdragon processor. Windows 10 on ARM is very promising.
Fair point, I've edited the description. That stuff in the right corner is a USB audio recorder for recording guitar, unrelated to the video. I never expected people to notice! :)
Can i _EDIT_ 2160p (or 1440p) videos with zooming frame by frame? My S8 says "UHD and QHD videos doesn't support zoom". (while cutting the video). That is when i edit and cut videos to shorter. It would be nice to edit frame by frame like it is possible with 1080p videos. Thanks for answers :)
I have a note9 and have been contemplating getting the dex station for traveling. Looks like it would function pretty well for a light duty laptop replacement.
You only need a usb to hdmi cable, lots cheaper than going for the Dex station. Get one with power passthrough and you've got an entire workstation with just a phone, cable and Bluetooth peripherals.
Oh really? The Samsung note phones have always been just as expensive, if not more expensive then iPhones like the latest note 10. Their is almost zero practically of this and only a very very small percentage of people actually do this
@@purpletomato5535 they are obviously better than iPhones but every iphone user is envious because they can't switch to other brands they already bought too much apple (useless) products that makes it hard to switch to better brands. Do you think that the new displays for the 2020 iPhones from BoEM is a benefit for them? I think not because till now every brand was buying displays from Samsung even apple and apple is now 4th in the world market leader because they couldn't make good phones the 3rd leader is Xiaomi the 2nd leader is huawei and the first market leader is Samsung apple is doing everything wrong because they want to get rid of samsung even though samsung is helping them even Huawei switched to Samsung's displays and ram chips because they don't want to be a bad company from china they want to be a good company! You know, I use Dex with my S9+, and I use the same keyboard model that you use, the K380. Sadly, it doesn't work very well in my native language (Portuguese). For US Keyboards, I use the US International Layout. I'd already tested it for macbook, ipad and Alienware, and it works just fine with this layout, but Samsung Dex not, sadly. Despite of it, yes, I think it's a good replacement for desktop, but, keep in mind that still is a desktop experience based in Android, so not all apps works in background for example.
Arm is the future because 3-4hrs of screen on time is the past. As a lifelong PC guy with limited Linux experience, I'm blown away that only AAPL has taken the plunge. Linux on Dex is the proof of concept that 7inch Android/Desktop phones are the netbooks and Macbook Air's (pun intended) of the future. The only question is, does Tim figure it out or do I look to buy long dated puts.
Great insight!! I've been using dex a lot when editing my videos, but im using Kinemaster. I really hope kinemaster will support dex further rather than a blown up version of the app :) Thanks for this! 🍻
@@DavidAddis So why didn't you do that? :) Would make sense to see what dex can do, including Linux. I don't see any point in running Android apps on a big screen. I can already do that on any phone using screen share, like Chromecast or Miracast.
@@dtesta It's a fair point. In my defence Linux on Dex is currently unavailable on the Google Play Store - you have to dig up the apk and sideload it... and the TLDR is that most software app images won't work, because they are usually built for x86 or x64 and not ARM. But, yeah, I should have mentioned it (I simply didn't know about it at the time - I have learnt about its existence from the comments on this video!) and I may do a video just on Linux on Dex. But..... I do see a point in Dex (even without Linux). It's a proper multi-window environment and is more comfortable to use than vanilla Android UI on a big screen. And for the few apps that do have Dex support, you get a different experience tailored to mouse and keyboard instead of touch.
Hi David! This is very helpful for me. Have you tried Adobe Photoshop (the real Photoshop like the desktop version, can edit in layers and layers effects and so on) running on DEX? I have downloaded the mobile version in my phone but it is not as same as the desktop version of Adobe Photoshop. If u did find the solution please make one video specifically on this. TQVM!!
I don't think there's a way to run the Desktop version - you are still limited to Android apps (well, unless you go the whole Linux on Dex route). Correct me if I'm wrong!
The way I see it, Samsung Dex is more of a backup computer than a mobile replacement. I think most people won't choose to use it over a laptop. However, there are situations in which the phone is the only thing you have on hand. Perhaps you forgot to bring a charger along. Or maybe a work emergency occurred while on vacation. Or you accidentally split coffee on your workstation and need something to work on while you wait for a replacement. In such cases, I think I would be glad to have a 'good enough' for substitute.
depends on your use mate , i did use mine as a full pc for a year and a half , albeit with no super heavy graphic editing requirements , although i did tinker with touching up a photo or two with the android software . but i loved the utility of having my computer i have on me all day long , and then being able to pop it in a dex station at home and all your stuff is just there on a big screen ready to go . and you have the many ui features of android on your big screen via a big keyboard , and your device is being charged at the same time . .
You were slightly ahead of your time with the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X(2)! Have you upgraded to any of S20 models, and if so, have you updated your DeX set-up as a result? Great video! I was wondering if a touch screen monitor would work with DeX... Hmmmmm... Would you know? Cheers!
I know this is an old video but if you can help, I can't seem to access my hard disk to editor videos in Adobe Rush and CapCut. I'm using a QGeeM as a USB C Hub to access my hard disk through my Samsung S9, note I can watch videos on the hard disk but can't edit from it through the editing apps. Any solution you can give will be appreciated
This is my setup: 49 inch Samsung Ultra wide monitor + Samsung dex 2nd gen + galaxy note 9 + Amazon Firestick. I Basically watch kodi on the left side of the screen and use a virtual Windows PC on the right side for gaming. Haven't touch my laptop in months lol.
@@victorhernandez-nj2xx im trying to build something similar did you follow through on a guide you can link me? Im interested on that windows environment i need steam running mainly.
@@SLYT3K you don't need to follow a guide, there are 2 HDMI ports on the back of the Ultra wide monitor, attach the firestick in the first one, then, the Samsung dex station on the second one. After that, plug your note 9 to the dex station, then turn on the monitor and enable PBP (picture by picture) option so you can display both sources at the same time. Then in dex mode, download Shadow PC app, pay for the membership, download Steam and that's all. Don't forget the Wireless speakers.

i was using chrome and android , i could watch netflix , you tubes , browse the web , Gmail , talk on the phone while browsing the web , and the little dex station charged and cooled the phone , and was a nice little stand .
i had no interest in games , but for general stuff it worked very well , sometimes i used samsungs browser which imo is actually pretty good and gives you some cool options , and on occasion may also work as a work around for the odd app .
even on my old S8+ i could have quiet a few windows on the screen and it worked very well .
i also loved using my phone during the day , taking photos or video , when i get home , drop the galaxy into the stand , and 20 seconds later it is up and running and all my stuff i acquired during the day was ready to go at a button press ,
and no transferring of stuff to cloud or to your pc , it is already on your phone/dex/pc ready to go , and that is really cool imo .

Interesting, does Kine support multiple tracks of video well? It seemed like the main thing Rush had over its competitors.
@@DavidAddis yes and also can support 4k video and can do chroma key, animation, and many more
@@DavidAddis kinemaster
Thanks David for sharing. When you shoot a video in landscape mode with the Camera it will display as an inverted portrait on the monitor. But when you play the video it will display correctly in landscape mode on the monitor. I don't know why it should be like that, it looks like a glitch in the Samsung Dex.
Re: software development - See Linux on DeX
I will check it out!
@@arthur...barros is there any problems on running Ubuntu on DeX?
@@arthur...barros i use it was well to develop react.js for my little projects. I wish i could ssh into it.
Appreciate this video, thanks. I have been considering getting a laptop or a chromebook but this has made me consider a tablet with dex. Cheers
This was most helpful, thank you!
You're most welcome!
I wonder if Dex is possible on s9 with just Hdmi-usbC cable ( no Dex pad )
*suggestion: next time please try to put a more peaceful background music ;)
Yes it is 👍
Yup, as long as you're on Android Pie, you're good.
If you use a windows phone it will kind of be a windows 10 computer
I am confused .. i need more than one just cable? (type-c ,hdmi)
Nope, if you have the right monitor, it can supply power and receive a display signal through a single USB-C cable.
Really great content!!
That's interesting. What's the performance when exporting 1080 or 4k videos?
Exporting this 15 minute video in 4k took about an hour, and then had some issues with the file size (truncated at 4GB). At 1080p it took about 15 minutes (so almost real-time!).
Anything you can do with an android app you can do via DeX and there are video editing apps. What's the confusion?
How much u want to bet apple will find a way to copy it
PC's: *exist*
Samsung: I'm about to end this man's whole career
This made me like Samsung 🤯
MaggieOnline Just have a stack of smartphones sitting beside your monitor to switch from at any time...
great video, brother.
I keep hearing reviewers saying it cannot be done to this day. They have no clue.
When u loose first typed in letter, isn't it because BT keyboard just waking up?
Yes. If i haven't used my BT keyboard with dex for a while. i text to press space bar couple times to wake it up :)
I did wonder about that, but it's after I hit the Start button, so it should be awake for the full app name.
The same thing happens with my keyboard and mine is wired. I think it's a software bug like he said.
are the keyboard and mouse connected to the phone or the desktop via bluetooth? how did you connect them?
To the phone, by Bluetooth.
That future you talked about is now here. Samsung Galaxy Fold is a phone, a tablet and a pc with Dex included.
Since you can use the phone like a touch pad in Dex mode, I would expect it to support the stylus too... sorry I haven't tried that myself. 🙂
The phone can run apps on its own while you use dex on the monitor for something else. Example: you can have youtube or be working on a word document on dex. And do the video call on the device itself
How I have DeX note 8 cang seem do it says touchpad or keyboard no smartphone+DeX option on phone
When I visit to other country , DEX will be convenient and easy to use without any PC. Thanks !
Wow i never knew how useful Dex is untill i saw this video! Dammmm sammy did a great job

Reviewers often say DEX is a Gimmick, but my word, if this was done by apple, this would be something else
Crapples still in the stone age.
An excellent video, David. I cannot fathom the few negative comments. I would like to know their reasons. They probably don't like the colour of our T-shirt or size of your monitor.
Thanks Laurie. Yeah I don't quite get it either, but there you go. 🤷♂️😅👍
visual studio on dex through samsung's 'linux on dex' is currently possible (albeit in beta)
you can use application called Rush by adobe for video edit.
I did! :)
@@DavidAddis oops.. sorry
Hi David! Can google sheets be viewed on full screen on samsung dex? Does it have similar functions to when you're using a PC?
Yes and yes!
Roll on Windows on Dex!! That would solve a lot of problems.
But can you use dex on Samsung Galaxy a10e
Missing equipment list... DEX what is on your desk. Phone stand (besides lamicall) what is in the desk right corner, etc.
Dec26 2022 and yes , Dex Is A Beast!
5:06 you could try exFAT, it doesn't have the 4GB file size limitation like fat32 and it is widely supported amongst OSes.
Where did you get the doc for your phone
The note 9 will read NTFS, FAT32 and Unix filesystems without needing to install any software but you need external power for the drive
Will note 8 too?
Quite possibly, my note 4 does
@@kev7345 cool thanks
Dude, "Logi" == Logitech. Mind blown?
This is Samsung not apple( which has limited functions and high price)
Well done Samsung
So what does that mean? SHUT UP

@@purpletomato5535 I think you're the one who needs to stop talking because Samsung is the company that making iPhones display. Plus Galaxy 10 has a 2280x1080 display, not a normal 1920x1080 and 10+ a 3040x1440 one so there is a huge difference. At least google something before talking about it you stupid fuck.
still using my note4
You need make your setup in description affiliated links ... Just saying
Good point! I should really look into that...
The only question is, does Tim figure it out or do I look to buy long dated puts.
subscribed .. to see more ! .. Danke
Cheers!
Excellent vid and great proof of concept, sir.
Thanks James!
Good info mate. Thanks
Wow I'm actually impressed...!
Great insight!! I've been using dex a lot when editing my videos, but im using Kinemaster. I really hope kinemaster will support dex further rather than a blown up version of the app :)
Thanks for this! 🍻
Fingers crossed for that! 🤞🤓
Super nice video! thank you im gonna use dex now! :)
Hurrah!
All of this and more was the reason why I went with the Note 9. Never regretted my decision. It's a great device.
Are you able to run normal Linux programs? Seems you are only showing Android apps, which are extremely cumbersome in a desktop environment.
Yes Android is all you get... unless you install Linux on Dex as well.
And for the few apps that do have Dex support, you get a different experience tailored to mouse and keyboard instead of touch.
so you use your hand to hold your phone and recording this????
I was holding a Sony action cam, but yes. 🙂
You get an extra thumbs up for mentioning virtual reality.
In such cases, I think I would be glad to have a 'good enough' for substitute.
depends on your use mate , i did use mine as a full pc for a year and a half , albeit with no super heavy graphic editing requirements , although i did tinker with touching up a photo or two with the android software .
but i loved the utility of having my computer i have on me all day long , and then being able to pop it in a dex station at home and all your stuff is just there on a big screen ready to go .
and you have the many ui features of android on your big screen via a big keyboard , and your device is being charged at the same time . .
Very informative!!!
Thanks!
