  • Building a bat house from cedar fence pickets!
    PLEASE NOTE: many people have pointed out in the comments that the location I chose to place the bat house is not ideal. Bats need more space underneath the house to drop out and gain speed as they take flight.
    The total size of the bat house is about 18"x30" with two chambers for the bats to hang in. Bats are wonderful little creatures that can help eat unwanted insects in your yard!
    Enjoy the video! Let me know if you have any feedback or questions.

    The recommended openings and landing sizes can be found at batcon.org. I think a significant oversight was not drilling holes in the internal walls so the bats can move between chambers. I really liked how you attached it to the wall.

    Awesome build. I'm curious about the placement, because bats like to have minimum 8' space below to drop and fly. They would hit the shed roof. Did bats use the house? ty

    You landing is little small. Your opening is double size it should be. They need 3-5 feet under to get air draft when they drop. Add small shingles to roof to add heat holding source .
    Very sharp looking house. At very least it looks nice.

    • @luvublueable
      @luvublueable 6 років тому +1

      The cavity inside should be 3/4" but at the entrance way add a 1/4" to 3/8" strip to opposite side of landing. This will help them feel more secure and keep wasps from making it their home.

      Sandi Remson very easy to figure that out yourself. They can be any dimension you wish. You can see how many planks he used. You could make one with just 2 planks if you wanted.

    • @TheOrcasRule

      Circular saw with the blade depth set very shallow, like 1/8 inch. Just to rough up the surface so the bats have something to "grip" to.

    Outstanding! Best design on the net for the size. With some minor adjustments I'll copy yours and say I got the design from Mosermakes.com. Ha! How bout mounting it in that tree on the side of your house. It's more than high enough and with your creative talent I bet you could make it look like a Hyatt for bats. Regards. jerry

    • @butchgreene
      @butchgreene 6 місяців тому

      Supposedly trees aren't the best location for the boxes because it gives predators access. Granted, their natural houses would be in tree hollows, but still, I mounted mine on a building because of this advice.

      I haven't built one yet, but have been reading. I don't know if this is a good spot. Bats need to drop out of the box for 3-4 feet to get speed to fly. The other part of the building might be in the way, maybe not. Hard to judge distance in videos.
      Great looking box, well done!

    UPDATE: GREAT bat house build BUT it’s a total FAIL. Here's why. Now, where do I start?
    1. Bat house placement FAIL.
    Roof under bat house doesn’t allow for 10-12 ft free fall. Bats would drop and hit that protruding roof = FAIL.
    2. You provided no way for bats to climb up. They require something to hold onto to climb up = FAIL.
    3. Ever heard of actually speaking? This isn’t the silent movie era any longer, Sparky = FAIL.
    4. Even several on-screen descriptive chyrons (Google search that word) would have sufficed, but none here = FAIL
    5. Stick to making bat houses, only. Let someone else produce your videos. Any 14 year old could do better.
    Bats are smart enough to not even bother nesting in your creation, once they realize there's not adequate free fall. 🤷‍♂️
