Definitely the most creative/beautiful design I've seen so far and expertly finished - well done Alfred! Mine is no piece of art and I did use a very fine mesh (not recommended) instead of cutting grooves in the wood (don't have equipment). After more than a year, they now sleep over almost every day. Love watching them take off and return, but most of all love the fact that there are less mosquitos and I get free guano for the garden!
Looks amazing, however a major flaw in there is that the entrance is too big/wide for bats, bat houses should have a very narrow entrance otherwise it leaves them vulnerable to predators. Not sure if you got any bats there, as they are very picky about their house, specifically where they feel safe!
Very nice build. Love the walnut. We live near Amish walnut furniture business where we can get free walnut scraps. If only I had your talent and equipment. Hope the bats enjoy it, too.
I’m from the UK. I just want to say my friend, that I love wildlife so much as I can see you do. Wish you was in uk to give me the confidence of what you have achieved and build one for myself. My next project is a bat house, and people can over complicate things like you’ve shown, but if there’s a job worth doing, then do it once and do it properly, as my father taught me. You’re very inspiring, and thank you for a masterclass of wood working. 👍
Do you have the plans? I wouldn't mind making this. I'd like to use a timber more suited for outside, but I doubt it will look as good as yours does in walnut. Just a shame walnut isn't great outside. I know you only used what you had, and it looks unbelievable,it really does. The bat motif is brilliant. Bravo
Nice to see a cabinet maker use walnut to make a bat house .. I'm making one and I'll use your ideas about cutting grooves instead of tacking some kind of mesh .. I like it better your way .. nice job.
Great build! Interesting to see what people thought of the isolation rules from very early on in the pandemic! We've "made it through" by spring of 2023 but people are still dying everywhere. 😢 In hindsight, those early weeks of isolation and paranoia seem ineffective.
when you cut the foothold grooves, did you just keep moving you reference board over a 1/2" with each cut to get them perfectly spaced like that? @From the Woods thanks 😊
I made three of these following his design with some modifications. I wanted a smaller interior gap of .75" and a longer landing pad. My two chamber boxes were cut from 8x12x1 boards, whose actual dimensions were 8x11.5x.75 : Back 29" Middle 22.25" Front 19.25" Sides 19.33"x2.25" And for a three chamber variant I used: Back 32" 2nd middle 24" Sides 24.5"x3.75" I stained exterior-facing wood with water-based dark walnut color, but left bat wings unstained for contrasting colors that everyone loves. I also did cedar plugs without stain for more contrasting colors. I really like how they turned out, but will be curious if they are both wide and tall enough to attract bats. You can see my boxes at Rockler.com if you look at customer photos for Rockler Portable Drill Guide with Vise.
Thanks for watching. I haven't seen any activity this year, but its till pretty cool here. There is some evidence of bat droppings but I have not seen any in the bat house.
Is there another style for a bat box,I have bats under a folded down parasol ( hence I can't use the parasol ). Has anyone costructed a small parasol style bat box ?
If you are trying to help people or give them ideas than it's important to put in your title what state your building this for. It matters what state your in. Can't build a box for Texas and expect people in Wisconsin to copy you and kill those bats in that state.
Well it wasn't my intent to injure or kill bats, just to have a good afternoon in the shop making something. I hope you can see it your heart to forgive me for my apparent ignorance.
@@fromthewoodsyyc I forgive you .. Lol! When we were lads, my brother and I used to go into the barn up on the hay bales at night, and bats would come in to get bugs around the drop down lights.. we'd throw empty gunny sacks up and they'd get their claws hooked in them and we'd catch them .. once we took a pair from up in the Sacramento valley to San Francisco to let them go .. poor bats, I wouldn't do it now..
Your design is wonderful. Elegant, fun, functional -- and you used Walnut. This is a Grand Slam!
A walnut bat house. That is such beautiful overkill! Thanks for the video, I love it! That bat motif is definitely something I would want to copy!
Brilliant tuition, loved the design. No mesh used to tangle the bats.very impressive and definitely one to copy.
Very nice
I’ve been searching a load the DIY bat houses and this one is easily the Best! ……. Period⚡️

The bat motif is an outstanding touch. 👏
The prettiest one this far I've seen. Thanks!

Bellissimo lavoro complimenti ! Proverò a farla seguendo il suo video con la speranza di dare una casa a quei simpatici animali volanti .
Very beautiful !! Nice work 👏
Sensational!

VERY nice!!
This is so well crafted! Amazing design
Amazing!!!
I'm going to make one like that. Thanks for the idea!!!!
If you build it---They will come. Excellent presentation on the build.
Chuck
Wow! You are truly an awesome carpenter. I would hang this beautiful artwork right in front of my front yard for all to enjoy. Great job.
Wow, walnut your bats are styling, mine will have to happy with cedar. haha Thanks Sweet Work
Great tutorial! Thank you. And the quote is hilarious! from Calvin and hobbes.
Thanks for watching. It was a fun project.
Fantastic!!! Beautiful job!!! Looks amazing 👍
Awesome.... Great design....
Very artistic design
Very nice , can't wait to see if I can build that , great stuff 😀
What kind of finish did you use on it before the install?
Loved it. Subscribed
Thanks, for the positive comment and for subscribing.

Really nice project ... with some well thought out ideas to make it standout from the rest ... will have an attempt myself making it soon.
What a nice design idea with the batform
Great Job thanks 👍

This is the nicest bat house I have ever seen. Nice build! Might have to use your design if you don't mind?
Go ahead! glad you enjoyed the video
Beautiful work.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video.
A really fun project.
Very nice work!
Well done, definitely trying this out

Pretty build, how's the occupancy 3 years later?

Do you show any sign of bats in your houses?
Nothing yet, but they're happily living in the peak of my roof, so hopefully they transition once I get around to safely evicting them.
@@kayakmaloney can you share the plans?
@@jmarcant616 I checked but don't see any saved plans for it
THE pins you are using, are they Stainless Steel or Monel metal ?? This will keep corrosion at bay for sure with the bat condo.
Can you use an old scaffolding plank to make a bat box
Can you share the plans/measurements ?
I never knew Alfred was such a fine woodworker.
Do you have any photos or video of it in operation. How long did it take to fill with bats or did they ever show up. Great design! Good Job.
Not yet , keep looking but no inhabitants yet. Thanks for watching.
Can Red Cedar be used for a bathouse or, is it too aromatic?
only 500 views, should be 500,000
I know, right? But we'll get there eventually.
Thanks for the positive comment.
Excellent idea and build. Any updates on if they used it? Have you noticed if they use the holes to move from chamber to chamber?
Thanks for watching. I haven't seen any activity this year, but its till pretty cool here. There is some evidence of bat droppings but I have not seen any in the bat house.
Very nice bat house. Might do better if it were 3x larger.
Very nice but too may extras
Do you have a pdf we can buy?
What type or finish did you put on that very nicely crafted and designed bat house?
I had some water based out door urathane in the shop. Clear satin finish.
Great work!! But…..What we are all wondering is……. Harvey Dent…… can we trust him?!
So did you get bats?
Unfortunately no bat so far. I did have to remove a wasp nest that took up residence though.
what are dims for the front and center pieces before you cut out your logo?
Is there another style for a bat box,I have bats under a folded down parasol ( hence I can't use the parasol ). Has anyone costructed a small parasol style bat box ?
I know this is old, but look into a rocket box
Nice work! Any residents?
None as of yet but there are some dropping marks on front bottom so maybe this year.
Calvin and Hobbs when they meet batman
Close
Calvin and Hobbes yes
But no to meeting batman.
Calvin is doing a report on Bats, the bug scourge of the skies.
Your project looks nice, but Walnut won't last against the elements.
yes, walnut is probably not the best choice for outdoor use. It's what I had on hand. But I'm sure the pattern and ideas will work with cedar as well.
Walnut will stand up to predators well. A woodpecker would tap his beak into a nub before he could get inside. Common problem with bat boxes.
Seriously?? 12" walnut???😱
yup, pretty sweet. We treat our bats well here.
But seriously it was a scrap piece laying around for a couple of years already.
