I think starting in this late an era definitely helps to ease the pain of scarce luxuries because it's so much easier to get amenities from other sources than in the Ancient/Classical era. I think what's hurting you most in this game is the absence of city states. Your whole deal, apart from districts across rivers as Hungary is about city states.
Correct. However as you see later in the video, I broke the game with Nalanda's help =). I don't know if this was a function of the emperor difficulty, but the AI was fairly easy to stymy
