- It’s early August 2020 on Cape Cod, and giant bluefin tuna have arrived in great numbers. In this episode we head out fishing for tuna with a group of members from My Fishing Cape Cod and captain Cullen Lundholm of Cape Star Charters. During this trip we hooked three bluefins and observed amazing humpback whale feeds. It was an amazing trip that none of us will ever forget!

Is it possible to fish for tuna using spinning reel? If so, what size of the reel/test do you recommend? And why most prefer a conventional reel reel?
It's possible to catch the smaller tunas (less than 400 pounds) on spinning gear. Spinning tackle is not strong enough to catch 800, 900 and 1,000lb tunas. Conventional reels work best for the true giants. Shimano Saragosa 18000 with 80lb braid is a good spinning reel for tuna. I’m curious as to why you guys fight tuna in the holder? here in Australia that’s almost unheard of in-fact I’ve never seen it usually as soon as a big barrel is hooked we fight the fish standing up strapped into the harness same goes with other big game fish like marlin and so forth
Here off Cape Cod we often encounter tunas as large as 1,000 pounds, and while fighting fish that big on stand up is possible, it can be quite dangerous, especially if you are strapped into a harness. With the swivel rod holder we can land the fish as quickly, efficiently and as safely as possible. Let me know if I can answer anything else and thanks for the comment!
@@MyFishingCapeCod yeah I figured that was the case would want to be strapped up to a 1000lber on stand up and have the line lock up on the reel that would be bad news. We mainly target barrels for rhe sport side on of things but it looks like you guys have a commercial aspect to it as well would I be correct?
Hey any tips for a newbie? We have a 22ft Grady center console with a new rod and reel with very good line but we have a pen 80 and not a 130 we are fishing live macks about 60 feet of the ledge of stellwagon with leader what can we do to find the fish (we don’t have a front fighting station or a sea anchor but we are working on getting both so we are limited to the 2 swivel rod holders in the stern of the ship. Any good tips for beginners?
A Penn 80 will work fine. That is all I use actually. Stellwagen will probably produce better fishing once autumn rolls around.
