Oh my God, I LOOOOVE that Joel Grey won - he was fantastic in that part! And I'm sorry, but he's so adorable! He's just the sweetest guy, and his character was such a slime... this time the Academy got it RIGHT!
Paramount didn't want the Best Actor votes split between him and Brando. So, instead, the Best Supporting Actor votes got split between Pacino, Caan, and Duvall. I certainly don't mean to say that Joel didn't deserve his win here, but I have to wonder if he would have won if he'd only had one of those three to compete with. As an Academy voter, I would have to look at it this way. Al Pacino, James Caan, and Robert Duvall all had wonderful and outstanding performances, but those performances where mostly done in scenes featuring the other nominated actors. So I feel that they each were dependent on the other for producing the magic on screen. Joel, on the other hand went it alone, and shined on his own in that film. I would be hard pressed to pick a best within the Godfather crew since they had been so dependent on each other, so Joel is the easy out vote here because he does give an award worthy performance.

You know it's bad when not only the Golden Globes put Pacino in lead and not supporting, but even he didn't show up to the ceremony because he believed he should have been nominated in Best Actor along with Marlon Brando.
I was just reading Jennifer Grey's book about this moment, while she and her brother stayed at home watching on TV, so thought I would look it up. Amazing Joel won with the Godfather crowd there.
A few years after this award I was walking around the corner from work at 1345 ? Ave of the Americas and I noticed Mr Grey walking alone next to me. No bodyguards or paparazzi. !
Finally!! thank you so much AMPAS!! Mr Grey's performance so deserved that oscar His emcee was perfectly done, showing the changes everyone suffered during the rise of the third reich
Great movie ! I recall Joel Grey walking past me off of Avenue of the America's a few years after he won this award....it was dark but I recognized him. Before paparazzi and bodyguards !
I cannot wait until next year when Joel Grey comes back to Broadway for the revival of Anything Goes! He is SOOOO amazing and I am extremely happy that he won the Oscar! Only 1 of 7 actors who won the Tony and the Oscar for the same role!
MISS Ross was a throwback to old time stars like Crawford. Check out that outfit! Now go to Liza's win later that night and see Ross in totally different outfit!! One thing for presenting, another for winning!
He deserved that! When they wanted to make the movie the only way they could get permission was if they put Joel Grey, who played the emcee on Broadway, into the movie. You can see why when you watch it. I’ve seen it at least 30 times but probably more. It’s one of the best movies of all time! If you haven’t seen it you should. It’s about the growth of the Nazi party in Berlin in 1931, but the focal point of the movie is the cabaret and how it changes with the times. And everything about Cabaret applies today as much as it applied in 1931-1945. It’s a fabulous movie!!
Is there another film which had had three nominates in the same award? I think not even two. The godfather is amazing. However, Joel Grey's performance is my favorite
+cloroform_boss How about the 1935 movie Mutiny on the Bounty? Three nominees that year for Best Actor (Clark Gable, Charles Laughton, Franchot Tone) and they all lost to Victor McLaglen (The Informer).
RIP JAMES CAAN ( 26.03.1940 - 06.07.2022 ) James in "The Godfather" gave an amazing performance, but I'm silent about "Misery" in general, he should receive not only a nomination for this film, but also an Oscar, it's a pity that the Academy did not bother to give James at least an "Honorary Oscar" !!! What a pity !!! Blessed memory to a wonderful artist !!! Goodbye Santino Carlione !!! 😭🙏😿
It's forgettable role. This carried on the academy's back and lead to Denzel losing to Al Pacino for an utterly forgettable role "just in case he never gets an award again".
As an Italian American who has a strong bias towards The Godfather. I saw Caberet, and I'll admit Joel Grey deserved the Oscar. He took down the Corleone kids, something that Barzini couldn't do.
For CABARET fans who have not watched THE HEARTBREAK KID, you need to do so. I've seen CABARET, THE GODFATHER and THE HEARTBREAK KID. Eddie Albert gave a better performance than all the others. Amazing how many people in this comments section act like Eddie Albert wasn't there.
In all of the years since this award was given I have never seen a single article written by or a single comment made by a film critic saying that any of the other actors in this category were robbed. Joel Grey was just that good and the win was truly well deserved. No one else could've played that role
Wow. I forgot Cabaret was up against The Godfather. Maybe the three brilliant Godfather actors took votes from one another? Duvall Pacino and Caan for me were all part of one big ensemble cast. But Joel Grey had to center Cabaret otherwise it could have veered off in so many directions. I rarely say an actor deserves it when it comes to awards.. but Joel Grey did!
In the spring of 72 Cabaret had just opened in a movie theater in Wichita which was 30 miles from our hometown. Opening night was the Saturday of our Jr/Sr Prom. We wore our formal attire to go to the banquet but ditched the dance to go to Wichita to see Cabaret. (All our parents knew our plan) Going to our seats we realized that another group from our high school had done the same thing. But the movie was great and we had a great time and I was mesmerized by Liza's and Joel's performances.
Pacino should have won the Oscar for his performance. Al Pacino have his best performance in The Godfather part one, not part two. He had so much depth to his character in The Godfather part one and he should have won the Oscar for that film.
All the other nominees except James Cann won best actor oscars later and one of the presenters James Coburn was to later win a best supporting oscar. Joel was outstanding in Cabaret.
What the hell are you talking about? Eddie Albert *never* won an Oscar. Do you even know what you're talking about? Your comment reeks of, "I don't know who Eddie Albert was, I never saw THE HEARTBREAK KID, so to me he doesn't count". By the way, Albert deserved this more than the others. Grey shouldn't have even been nominated. Ned Beatty and Ronny Cox from DELIVERANCE would've been better nominees.
The Godfather is one of the most stacked ensembles of all time, every actor is a part of the magic and plays a large part. Joel Grey carries large chunks of Cabaret by himself through showmanship and presence, with no name to identify the character and comparatively little screentime. Even if Brando was here instead of Pacino, I'd still be vouching for Grey. Totally deserved win IMO.
I'm surprised on how nice the people in the comment section are on this video in comparison to the Liza Minnelli video of the same night. I'm also surprised I'm not seeing people complaining that a musical beat out a gangster film lol. I'm glad people recognize Joel's talent and what he brought to the role. He did what he had to do and a lot of people don't understand how taxing it is to make singing/dancing/acting simultaneously look easy when it's not. Also in this case, he being Jewish , filming in Germany, doing a movie set in the time of the rise of the Nazi party was definitely difficult for him.
48 years later and four of the nominees are still with us! Joel had insane competition, and he was wonderful.
Not anymore

You know it's bad when not only the Golden Globes put Pacino in lead and not supporting, but even he didn't show up to the ceremony because he believed he should have been nominated in Best Actor along with Marlon Brando.
One of the truly great performances in movie history.
Awh the way liza looks so proud of him🥰
what a talented man, like i mean look at him he looks so friendly
God Bless You Joel Grey!! Cabaret is my absolute favorite musical of all time.
Liza was ecstatic lol!
November 2021 , watching this and I think Joel Grey is invencible.
a short but grateful speech. from a very talented actor
Liza is just wonderful! She is so happy for her friend! They both deserved their awards. Most strange and extraordinary performances!
Finally!! thank you so much AMPAS!! Mr Grey's performance so deserved that oscar
His emcee was perfectly done, showing the changes everyone suffered during the rise of the third reich
Great movie ! I recall Joel Grey walking past me off of Avenue of the America's a few years after he won this award....it was dark but I recognized him. Before paparazzi and bodyguards !
Wow ! great movie and Grey totally deserves this. Outstanding movie !!!
He is so sweet! And even though he is up against the amazing actors from godfather.. I think he deserved it the most!
I cannot wait until next year when Joel Grey comes back to Broadway for the revival of Anything Goes! He is SOOOO amazing and I am extremely happy that he won the Oscar!
Only 1 of 7 actors who won the Tony and the Oscar for the same role!
That's now up to 11 performers.
Joel is the only one, however, to have also won a Grammy for the same role - the OBC album won in '68.
LOL at Robert Duvall's face when Joel Grey's name was called. He wasn't happy at all!!
I love Joel! He's such a brilliant artist in everything he does and a really nice bloke too!
MISS Ross was a throwback to old time stars like Crawford. Check out that outfit! Now go to Liza's win later that night and see Ross in totally different outfit!! One thing for presenting, another for winning!
I love this !!! He deserved this!!! Forever the Master of Ceremonies!!!!!
I saw that play on Broadway this summer, and it was amazing!
Joel Grey did amazing job in Cabaret.
Is there another film which had had three nominates in the same award? I think not even two. The godfather is amazing. However, Joel Grey's performance is my favorite
Yes. The Godfather - Part II (supp actor) and Tom Jones (supp actress) :)
*****, sure, On the Waterfront. :)
+cloroform_boss
How about the 1935 movie Mutiny on the Bounty? Three nominees that year for Best Actor (Clark Gable, Charles Laughton, Franchot Tone) and they all lost to Victor McLaglen (The Informer).
Yes Damiem, but all for leading actor.
Godfather Part II lol. Had Lee Strausburg as Hyman Roth, Michael V. Gazzo as Pentangelli, and Robert DeNiro as young Vito who won.
One of the best performances ever!
Godfather fans who have not watched Cabaret yet, please do so! It’s such a great movie, and both Joel and Liza deserved their Oscars for it.
Joel Grey more than earned that Oscar. Show some respect. Enough said.
The look on Robert Duvalls face was priceless when Joel Grey's name was announced was just priceless
Duvall totally acting like a sore loser. Joel had some big competition but he was just too good in Cabaret to lose.
I read about this moment in Jennifer Grey's book. Nice!
The homie Joel winning this thing is something I've wanted to see since college film class 2000. #GobBlessUA-cam
He was incredible in Cabaret. Haunting.
liza and diana on the same night...too fabulous!!!!!
Winning from the cast of the Godfather shows greatness and class.
In all of the years since this award was given I have never seen a single article written by or a single comment made by a film critic saying that any of the other actors in this category were robbed. Joel Grey was just that good and the win was truly well deserved. No one else could've played that role
goddamn james coburn was so fuckin cool!!! i miss that man!!
Honestly, Joel Grey gives a weird, chilling, yet brilliant performance in Cabaret, but James Caan is incredible in The Godfather.
D’awww! He’s so sweet and cute! Also, he ALWAYS looks younger than he really is......
Joel Grey didnt speak a word. He sang. He sang alot and with that told alot !
And thoroughly deserved it was.
Liza minnelli looked so happy seeing him waling up to the stage brimming with delight
Dude. You know he is a BOSS because he beat Caan, Duvall AND Pacino for the freakin' GODFATHER!!!
They didn't want to expose the mob
Robert Duvall looks pissed lol
He pretty much stood up the the mafia of Hollywood!
Pretty impressive to beat that field
He is lovely. We promise not to put Baby in the corner.
His daughter is Jennifer Grey from Dirty Dancing
I love how Liza Minnelli reacts😂😂
Please watch the movie Remo Williams if you`re not convinced about this mans talent.
He is the best.
Almost 50 years ago. Amazing.
Lizas reaction is everything.
Joel Grey single handily took down the strongest brothers of the Corleones.
