- Former design engineer Steve Dawson and product specialist Steve Smith sit down to talk us through the story behind the Class 5 five-watt, all-valve combo in the Marshall Museum in Bletchley, England. Built with 10" Celestion speakers, Dawson explains how he wanted to recreate the sound of a plexi in a 5-watt format to meet customer demand, all while still having the option to reduce the amp to 0.2 watts for those who want to rock out at home.
In this series, From The Museum, we look back at original Marshall amps in our archives and discuss how these amps came to be. Hear them for yourself as product specialist Steve Smith plays these iconic amps that have shaped Marshall Amplification into what is it now. For those who want to be heard.

Steve Dawson designed some of the best amps Marshall ever released. Marshall needs to bring him back to continue his legacy there.
Agree
100% agree! Loved both the Class 5 and the Vintage Modern!
i have both, i couldn't agree more ! And the Class 5 is so underrated, it's a really great amp !@@Voodoo66Chile
The Vintage Modern is a masterpeice, and i have the Class 5 as well.........the new DSL40CR is an amazing sounding
amp
I recall that Steve Dawson designed the Vintage Modern. That was my main amp for about 5 years at one point. I always got a killer sound out of it.
Yes the Vintage Modern is a great amp
Its a good amp, killer high end, the low end was meh, and it wasn't great with pedals, the reverb is weak af.
But it had a niche, and hit it well.
Used one of these for years. Ended up modding it to get a bit of a different sound, but it was great stock too. Definitely deserves a spot in the museum! I think the new sv20 is the modern sibling for it
Great video. I wish the interview was longer.
I have a combo and a head. They're fantastic. I'd be happy to see a no-nonsense handwired version of this!
Just bought this amp. I’m blown away! Quickly becoming one of my favorites of all time! 🔈💥
Lovely to see my old mate Steve Dawson - great guy who has taken care of my original Jubilee for years
Loved this amp! Need to buy another. I used mine with a treble booster and the sound was glorious!
Steve Dawson is a legend in Marshall
He NEEDS to be front and center for development
The Class 5 head and a Dr. Z 2x12 was my gig rig for a while when they first released these. I remember being quite fond of that combo.
LOVE the class 5, I did the lyle mod and changed the input impedance and it made it even better though. Had it since marshall launched these and it’s still my fav amp and I’ve got some amazing 100w marshalls too. People hate on the stock speaker but i love it, I even tried a 10” greenback and a 10” v30 in this amp but liked the f15 more than both
I had the Class 5 head when they first came out, I also got a 4x12 to go with it... Man it was great! I really regret ever letting it go and miss it often... So much gear I regret trading 😄 but the Class 5 and Vintage Modern are 2 I really want to add back in my life.
I had a Class 5 plugged into a Boogie 1x12 and it was SO LOUD. Holy smokes.
I had the head version , it was awesome :)
Nothing beats a Marshall 🤘🤘🤘!!
The gibson 500t bridge pickup sounds killer driving this amp . I don't like the 500t in any other situation but using it to drive a clean class 5 sounds glorious. The 500t makes it distort more and gives it some extra Satuation and compression that sounds thick creamy and very vocal in the mida especially in the lower mids . You get a very vocal low mid growl and grunt.
That was not much info on the build but I love mine because it's all I need.
EXCELENT !!! 🥰
I had this amp. It was the exact same one in this video, with the limited edition logo and grillcloth. For some reason, I don't remember if I sold it or returned it. I do remember these had a distinct smell when you turned them on. At first I thought maybe mine was defective but other people told me theirs had the same smell and that it was normal.
Even the "house volume" on these was not really neighbor friendly lol
Amazing amp. I recorded a whole album with one of these little darlings. Mic it up, and you've got a big Plexi on the recording!
Hi! Where can we hear the album?

Do video about Marshall 2061X
I have been looking for information about some Marshall bass speakers. I used to own four of them but they were stolen years ago and they had 18 inch reverse throws. So I would love to see some information about them and I keep hoping they show up although I have been told they are so rare they are probably in collections of Marchall speakers and Amps.
I regret not grabbing one of these when they were being blown out
Had 3 of them. 2 rattled like crazy and all three required tubes about every other month
I had a combo version that rattled quite a bit, and it sounded really fizzy when cranked. It seemed to have a dark bass heavy character that the EQ didn't seem to do much for. Not crunchy and bright like the plexi sound at all.
have the white combo awesome amp sound sick with good fuzz
still fairly cheap on ebay 400 500 dollars
ditto... :)
I Wish the Origin 5 would have turned out better . I love the 50 Watt origin and the 20 watt version is good although not as good as the 50 but the 5 watt Origin sounds awful .
I wish Marshall would Make another attempt at a Vintage Plexi style 5 watt amp . But perhaps with all the Studio series Amps having a 5 watt mode they will not bother .
I do love my DSL 5CR and the 5 watt mode on my Mini Jubilee.
These days, I'd just have the SV20 with a good attenuator - tone heaven
It truly is fantastic
Isnt this the same head they used with the tattoo series?
Never ceases to amaze me. Why not use half the video to play a LP Standard or Custom through it? Surely you have one. Would give a much better overview of the amp's sounds. These amps are underrated especially at that price point for an all valve Made in England Marshall. Liked the interview though.
Why Marshall VBA 400 is in museum?±± It is the best Marshall bass amp!!!
anyone know what mic they were using
had this model (the good version where the tubes are lined properly) i don't think anybody upgraded this amp like i did...i swapped the speaker to a 10" greenback much better than stock and the tubes were the tricky part i tried everything but had to admit that the best sounding tube at v1 was a vintage mullard i62 only made at 1964 with yellow print, a very rare and expensive tube. i sold the amp to an extremely lucky owner and got a 1974x.
Would've been perfect if it came with a 12" creamback or greenback. Oh and if it didn't rattle 😀
Man, I always wanted to buy one of these, but I was a broke college student while they were being manufactured. Just a simple Class A all-valve amp would’ve helped lowly guitarists, such as myself, grow and develop. Everyone knows those class a amps don’t mask anything.
Didn't miss much with this amp. Sounded fizzy with flubby low end to me.
Combo suffers from speaker rattle but sounds great thru cabs. Get the head version. Unless you want to throw more cash at a speaker swap.
That's the V2, with the low power switch... They don't rattle... or at least mine doesn't
The first version had the rattle but the 2nd version did not.
Can confirm no rattle on my 3 piece back version after years of gigging it
Why wouldn’t they remake this
I wish he was playing on a Les Paul
Real shame you won’t bring these back.
The Origin 5 is its successor .
@@motorrebell I know. I had the entire lineup.
It would probably be stolen on the first night anyway.
@@motorrebell Not nearly the same, unfortunately.
still cheap on ebay
😎👍💗🇺🇸🇸🇪🎸🎹💣🔥🎼🔊 YNGWIE!!!
They gonna bring this guy back to design some new amps or what?? Ever since the Astoria, new Marshall amps have been duds…
yeah the origin series is a miss
I bought a 5Class head & everybody tells me I'm a shithole. What's wrong?
