  • We re-cap and mod a Marshall Class 5. These guitar amps are cool and well worth the time to get them sounding a bit better. We go through this amp and upgrade a few components to make it more reliable and then do the mods with a demo at the end of the video.

Had one. Sold it. Now I regret it. Great playing, by the way.

Hello, thank you. That's a good speaker. Is there any techs close by who could mod it for you? Thanks for watching. Take care.

amp sounded great after the mods and with the PRS (i've taken to wiring all my humbuckers in parallel to preserve top end, they just sound way better to me that way) and lovely to hear you working those country double stop 6ths in :-) and the Eb9 to D7#9(#5) Gm7 is such a great progression, i love to make it Gm6 ...that way you can play (Eb9) Bb melodic minor to (D7alt) Eb melodic minor to (Gm6) G melodic minor and just blitz melodic minor colours through the lot... haha it's endless fun.

Hello, thank you. You do loose a bit of top end with the humbuckers, though the PRS pickups are quite bright. You can't beat a bit melodic minor scale. As you say endless fun. Thanks for watching and take care.

Came to learn more about class 5 amp but I'm going to download and rewatch to learn the proper way to noodle around with a guitar to wow friends and get the chick's. Well done. I do wish there was a way your voice was brought up more. The guitar sounds amazing but I struggle to hear you well. Thanks for making the video

Hello, thank you. It'a always a problem when recording the amps. the mike is further way from me. I will have to come up with a solution to solve it. Thanks for watching and take care.

Dramatic improvement Martyn, great through the 4x12 ,could do with a decent speaker though, great playing as usual, love that PRS.100 uf`s must have been cheap back in the day.

A great illustration of how changing the quality and value of a few components can turn the average into the desirable. But lets not forget that what you plug into it and the talent of the player also helps ..

Hello Pete. Yes, much better. It would have been interesting to try some different speakers in it too. Thanks Pete and take care.

Great playing! Your mods def improve the mid control...I've had a couple of these amps for many years now, I switched over from AC30's to two of these to save the back and have a quieter stage volume, I have always loved the sound of them, but there is a rattle of sorts that seems to be triggered by F# if playing them at increased volumes, did you experience this at all in the stock cabinet? It seems odd that they put that rubber foot between the speaker magnet and the chassis, I'm wondering if removing this could help? Really enjoyed your playing, do you ever play with a pick our always the flesh of your thumb, I use pick and pingers, but man your tone sounds great without the pick. So glad I stumbled across your content, cheers

Hello Scott, thank you. I didn't notice the rattle on this one. I do use a pick quite a bit. It depends on what I am playing. That's the trouble with AC30s. So heavy. Have you got still got the stock speakers in your Class 5s?

@@vintageguitaramp_guitarteacher hello, yes, I still have the stock speakers in both, I've thought about trying a different 10" speaker and also thought about having a custom cabinet built for a 12"...the amp tone works well for me and is a pedal friendly platform too....Do you have any experience with speaker changes in the class 5 or recommendations?

Definitely an improvement or the stock values. It sound so muddy when you first played it. Do you think that was mainly due to the tube or the original tone stock values. I've seen these for sale and never thought it was worth the money but guess the Marshall name will always fetch a pretty penny. Keep up the great work brother man.

Hello JT, thank you. It's is due to the changed values. I should have tried it with the stock tube after I had modded it then biased up the new one and and done a comparison. These amps have good bones for modding. There is potential get a lot more gain out of them. Thanks for watching and take care.

Is it better to remove the lead free solder and replace with leaded vs touching up with new lead free, hope this is not a dumb question , .I just don’t know …..cheers!

Hello Bob. That's a good question. I think it's better to remove the lead free and used leaded. The unleaded tends to crack over time, on the tube sockets mainly. Thanks for watching and take care.

Hello, I should have tried some pedals through it, although I don't own many. We are going to be building an 18 Watt Marshall on the channel soon. Thanks for watching and take care.
