with a spring reverb. It is a great amp, but digital reverb sounds horrible. The reverb in my 2005 is amazing.

@@AriaGuitarsFans It's good that the VM offer a little digital reverb. Most of great amps just don't have built-in reverb these days, especially heads. There are so many great reverb pedals today that gets the job done. Just put a good reverb pedal or anasounds spring reverb tank in the fx loop of the VM.

What a wonderful tribute to this amp. It was also such a great gesture by Marshall to honor the amp's designer by inviting him to appear in this video. It is really nice to see the people behind the amps, and it makes me respect the company even more for not forgetting the hardworking guys who develop all these awesome amps. Great job, Marshall!

I'm a proud 2266c owner. The preamp gains are a work of genius and the MV is so well done; I can easily play at bedroom levels and still get great sounds out of. I used to want a new amp every few months, but since getting this Marshall about 5 years ago, I haven't once felt I wanted to sell it on and get something different. Kudos to Steve Dawson, the Vintage Modern line are true modern classics.

I must say I LOVE the Vintage Modern! I've owned the 100watt 2466 since 2009.
In 2010 I blew a tube because a speaker cable I had failed me and it took out a bias resistor, I contacted Steve Dawson on the then named "Marshall Vintage Modern Forum", now called "Musicians Roadhouse Forum" and Steve was kind enough to personally help me get my amp back into service. I sent him pictures of the board and what blew and described how it happened and he told me exactly what to do and I was able to fix my amplifier FAST without waiting for a tech....no better tech than the actual designer!.
About a year ago on the Musicians Roadhouse forum I posted a video of my then band playing GNR's "Nightrain" and Steve gave it a like! I felt like I had made it as a musician at that point! Thank You Steve for such a great amp! While lots of folks have had sellers remorse over selling their Vintage Modern due to lack of understanding how to dial it in, I have not because I've never wanted to sell it, I'm proud to say that I've owned my original VM all these years and still believe in it just as much as I did years ago!.

Great to see Steve and hear his thinking behind the Vintage Modern. I had a 2266 head and it was awesome. Unfortunately I had to sell that to get my dream amp of a 2245 THW. I was especially a fan of the black/purple covering but it was frustrating to learn Marshall has long since stopped offering it for sale as a spare part. Bring it back! I would cover all my (non-vintage) amps and cabs in that. It’s such a great color.

Sooooooo Glad to see Steve contribuiting in this Spot. I still have my Marshall 2266C, which sounds sublime and has gotten me into a lot of trouble with my neighboors here in the Dominican Republic. The Marshall Vintage Modern has been a criminaly underrated series. I'd say that along with the JCM2000 DSL it's THE MARSHALL MODERN CLASSIC. If they bring it back, however, they need to make it mid boost footswitchable (I think we can all agree on that). Man, on a final note I want to point out that in the early 2000s Steve contributions to Marshall were very substantial. The JTM45/100 (40th Anniversary), the Super 100-JH (Hendrix Super Amp), the Marshall Vintage Modern Series and Finally the Class 5 Amp (which I owned and sold.......the biggest regret of my life). Steve was firing on all cylinders in the early stages of the XXI Century!...GLAD TO SEE HIM BACK.

Incredible amplifier. I got so lucky with my 2466 and got it for a steal at the local music shop about six years ago. Around five-six months after I made the purchase, I started seeing the internet guitar-realm light up over the Vintage Modern; this mythical, forgotten amp by Marshall that produces dead-on cranked plexi tones without killing everyone in the audience. They were already hard to come by, and prices went through the roof - higher than old Super Leads, in some cases. The craze isn’t quite what it once was. However, there’s still a strong demand for these amps, and they’d sell like hot cakes if Marshall reissued them.

Absolutely love this amp! It was always a joy participating with Steve Dawson in Vintage Modern discussions on some of the Marshall amp forums. This was my gigging amp for my time in a rockabilly band (amongst others). An absolutely killer tone with my Gretsch and some slapback. Testament to the Vintage Modern's versatlity. I also remember trying a Les Paul through it (I'm usually more about single coils) and noticing how the tone kept on improving more and more as the gain was DECREASED. A magical amp with a huge palette of colours. Marshall need to bring it back exactly as it was. It just doesn't need any additional gimmicks.

Here's a funny story, I had a friend from a rockabilly band that wanted to join forces with me in a second band and he kept trying to turn me on to all these hotroded Fender amps he owns (while always complaining about the Fenders he owned at practice) one practice I brought the Vintage Modern instead of my Jubilee and made him reluctantly jam on it, I can still see his 400lb fat ass grinning and saying to me "fuck I want to hate this amp, but the tones I've been trying to get out of these hotrodded Fenders are in that God Damn Marshall!".

I had the chance to borrow it for a gig from one of the other bands in the gig,I used it for a metalcore band and the owner used it for his glam tribute band in the same night. no kind of boost whatsoever infront of the amp, just pure Marshall power. He used it with in the LDR mode with his gibson SG and got insanely good JCM800 kinda tones, I turned on the HDR mode with the exact same settings with my Ibanez 7 string and I got the heaviest guitar tone ever! This is my favorite amp I've ever owned. It's absolutely a blast to play through, and totally inspiring for me. Many, many tones are available within, including modern metal sounds (with a boost). Thankfully, many years ago at the Name show I was able to shake Steve's hand and tell him he did one hell of a job designing it. I have had various amps over the years that do the Fender/Marshall thing. I've recorded many Marshalls over the years, and this one, when dialed in, just does everything I've ever wanted in a Marshall.
The only critiques I have are that I'm not real fond of the effects loop, so I leave it disengaged and run everything in front. It's also not the loudest 100w amp I've played by a long shot. Even with a 412, I have a little trouble keeping up with my drummer at times, but to be fair he's also the loudest drummer on earth lol. It just barely hangs with him. But all that said, I can't believe how great it sounds and I'm willing to forego all the modern amp appointments to get a sound like this. Amazing piece of gear that is way under appreciated. Glad to see it getting some love. Kudos Steve, this is a masterpiece!

Just a head's up, my purple head looks very, very dark in my room, almost black.
Unless you're pointing a very bright light on it, like they seem to do on most these videos, you're not gonna strike out as a Prince wannabe on-stage. What I mean is, it's not as invasive, if you find a big bright purple box on stage invasive (which I do) as it appears in most videos. I also never use any gain off of it, only cleans. Yeah I'm a big daft in taste I guess, but it's a great clean platform for whatever I what.
Thought about selling it to get a Lone Star, but I'd rather just save for some more months and keep both. Unless it skyrockets in value, I don't think I'm getting rid of mine too soon. It has this dark quality that I think would complement any Fender sound very well.
PS: Skip the FX Loop. It sucks, and also changes your tone completely.
Also, set the Master to 10 and forget it, use the pre-gain bass and treble controls instead (detail/body ). Specially on Single Coils, that saves you alot of noise, and you can squeeze more out of the amp (specially Presence for that chimey goodness) because of that.

Love this amp. Bought mine for $500. So many different tonal possibilities in it, but you really have to work at it to be rewarded.

Brilliant video, I would like to see one on the 2001 bass amp, I remember talking to the chap at Marshall, he made them all. I wish I never sold my one I had new.

I have a purple 50w head, the jewel light doesn't work and the reverb packed up ages ago but I wouldn't change it for the world. Definitely a tone machine as stated in the video.

I have this amp (combo) and used it with Gibsons and was a bit bored with it. It has been gathering dust in a studio of a friend. But, I just got my first strat and now I can’t wait to try it again.

I have a 2466 and love the two volume controls so I can really dial in each guitar properly (single coil vs humbucker).
Please reissue the 2466 as I want another one BUT, please drop the reverb for a depth control please 😉.
You have to reissue the matching 425A/B cabs with the G12C’s as well so I can have 2 full stacks 😎🤘 Frickin amazing speakers!

I own one of the last hand wired ‘73 1987 50watt heads. Guess this Vintage Modern model somehow got by me because I thought this was a promo for something new, lol. Like what I heard. I just may look for one of these for stage use.

The best new era Marshall, by far

The guy who sold me my 1974x told me about these amps, because it was my first Marshall (and I still love the 1974---and nos tubes made it even better), and I eventually got the gas for kt66 tubes, because i absolutely had to have that " it's a long way to the top" Malcolm tone. Fast forward to early 2022, and I found a 2266c available. So, I started researching if what the guy said was true, that this amp was the best affordable version of a jtm/45, and I found that Segeborn had made multiple videos on this amp. Well, Johann milked every classic Marshall tone out of this amp, including the only one I thought i wanted at the time. He had me swooning as I found out this amp could do tons more classic tones, then he put in the final sword, like a matador finishes off a bull, by dialing in the "love removal machine" tone on this dirtbox, and my knees buckled. I bought it the next day, and i have discovered even more tones that fall chronologically in between the two aforementioned above. Dawson has simply created an amp that encapsulates every Marshall tone from c.1966 to the mid eighties in my estimation, and for that I think we should all be humbly indebted. Sure, it has it's shortcomings, some of which Steve had nothing to do with, but the pros vastly outweigh the cons on this amp, as I continually find new tones on this thing every time I plug in and start fiddling with it. As others have noted, it is THE MOST TOUCH SENSITIVE AND GUITAR KNOB SENSITIVE amp that i have ever come across. I think I owe Steve another debt of gratitude for this, as it has forced me to become a better player with pick dynamics and attention to guitar knob settings. And that part isn't intimidating, it's exhilarating. I don't feel like my bad playing is being exposed, rather, it opens up vast new territories for me. You put a nice set of handwound pickups through this box, and you'll find yourself uttering "oh fuck, you can do that!?!". I'm a guy who primarily loved, and still loves Fenders and Voxes, and imagine my surprise that I now have virtually every Marshall tone I have ever dreamt about in one rig. Thank you, Mr Dawson.

I love my 2266. I do think that it would be better if they had used the footswitch to control the boost; too much going on with the stock set-up. I'll never sell it. Great video.

One of the main modern features of this amp is its much higher gain possibilities than a Vintage JTM 45 ., more gain than the JCM 800’s … it’s gain range goes from vintage to modern
