I'm new to MTB, bought my bike in July. Bought a cheap helmet from my LBS when I got my bike and then immediately replaced it with a more protective (not to mention much cooler looking) Fox Speedframe Pro ;)
I keep my helmets in helmet bags. You can find them at just about any military surplus store. Keeps the helmet safe and has plenty of room to store other ride essentials like gloves, glasses, extra clothing layers, and even a spare tube.
I have always biked with wire framed glasses which extended out from the protection of the helmet. A crash in July 2021 smashed these frames back into my head causing a huge gash just missing my right eye. My face and jersey were covered in blood in the next few minutes. A quick trip to the ER and 14 stitches later, I was patched up. Due to multiple injuries, it was six weeks before I was able to ride again. During that time, I got a new helmet and contoured sport glasses that did not extend beyond the protection of my helmet.
You were committed in this video. All those falls just to show us how the helmet protects the head. That Canyon is a nice looking bike. Love that Thermite Red.
@@wannesstas6182 some people think their trash is still worth something, and some times it actualy is, if you're talking about clothes or furniture. In case of a damaged helmet, just destroy it.
Some people actually go through skips, etc to then sell on things that look ok. Others who don’t know that a helmet has an ‘expiry date’ may think it looks good and donate to charity.
Very good advise. Please do a helmet crash and reuse video test. From scratches through cracks or dents. An objective test/study would be helpful in knowing when your helmet is truly toast.
Strong disagree with the every five years statement. I believe that the research done by the Snell Foundation has shown this to be false with no significant degradation in performance over time. And the manufacturers do have a financial interest in us regularly buying new helmets, and very little benefit in us keeping them for longer.
@@MD.media01 I think Colin Coulthard is talking about degrading from sunlight, pollution and general exposure to the elements. Like you, I would be happy if I could make it last 5 years with all the little bumps, scratches and nicks I put in it just from riding, let alone crashing.

However my full face helmet is getting on for fifteen years old, and because it's only used a couple of times a year and kept in it's bag between times it's still going strong.
I just bought a new helmet today and just noticed that it was manufactured in January 2022! It's already two years old and it's brand new from the store. I'm not replacing it in 3 years, and I think that 5-year replacement rule is a scam by the manufacturers to sell helmets.
What is in the end important for protection? Is it the foam or the hardcover? My helmet has a small dent in the hard cover from transport and I know the foam is not damaged. Do I have to replace the helmet? Would be thankful for some advice!
Good to see that I am not the only person on the planet who can sweat the POC pads into pieces. Never had that issue with any other helmet brand. For the cost of the helmet they should last longer.
On my first mtb I went over the bars on something like a 45° wall. People that already hated mtb’s put some saplings across the “trail”....not so eco minded ? I front cleared first one back didn’t. Pitched me into front wheelie, hit next one and flew like Superman and landed on my head and broke helmet in half and my collar bone and a finger... Shortly after that I did a face plant, new helmet, all my front were knocked loose. Been wearing a full face helmet ever since, well mostly. And totally with the 1000 watt Bafang. I might go around the manufactured home park for check, test, once around without anything. Like pedaling uphill at 5 mph with helmet strapped to backpack, if I get seriously injured, it’s just my time/Karma....

Do any manufacturers offer $$ back if you send them your helmet that went through a crash, or is 5+ years old? If they are recommending replacement, then I think it would be a good call, and would help justify a larger first-time purchase price if i knew they were going to help me out for the coming replacements down the road
I have a bell spark and i recently and a crash and a rock made a small strait dent in the side of the outer shell. I checked the foam inside and it isn't compressed. I actually bought the helmet a few weeks prior to this crash, so I'm not sure if I should get a new one again or keep it until i grow out of it.
If it was a decent crash then you should replace it I replaced whole helmet after getting impact to chinbar, but it was big hit on asphalt and i felt like the helmet was done even though no visible damage.
@@Itsudemo1 Also my head didn't hit the ground when falling i kind of rolled on my body and knees. but the small dent happened because of a rock that flew out of the ground.
I got myself a Kali Invader. Works really well for me. It is not strictly a two in one as the chinbar is fixed, but it is so well ventillated that this does not matter. For me it is so comfortable that since I crashed my old half shell it became my only bike helmet even for road riding. If it is really hot you can take the cheek pads out which makes the suspension harness the only contact point with your head. This makes it better ventilated than many half shells.
6. Your helmet is black and live in the desert. My head was cooking on my last tour. Even GoPro may want to make the camera white because even it over heats in this sun faster. Videos coming soon.
I wouldn't invest in big name brand glasses. Some chinese glasses, or cheaper name brand glasses work the same as the overpriced stuff from POC or Oakley. Invest in a quality helmet instead.
Helmets can be dented or damaged from falls and it's at this point you need to decide how worn it is, and wether there is any damage to the foam or materials. If you're unsure you can always take your helmet into a bike shop and they will be able to help you out in deciding if it's safe or not. They may even give you a friendly discount.. 🙌

I cracked it in 3 places. This vid was well timed as me and my bro were discussing when to get a new helmet. He said every 2 years to replace I said 5 years.

@@ark8tct I ordered a POC full face helmet, the size was too small. I contact POC through email no reply. I send them more then 10 emails I never got a reply back. That was 6 months ago. I eventually sold the helmet after 3 months of waiting for a reply. I will never order anything from them again. Their customer service is horrible. I did search on internet and if you look at trustpilot you see I am not the only one with bad customer support from POC. I boycott all their products now, until they start stepping up. I had many Fox helmets and TLD producst before, and I never experienced anything like this.

My MX helmet costed me around 300 euros, has been thru some bad ideas, the paint did not split, and is now about 13 years old... These helmets are expensive ($150-$300) so something like tht i would keep us ing it.
