loved my Dropframe until I got Bose Tempo glasses. The way the sides come down so much , combined with the strap placement, put pressure on my temples with the glasses. Not horrible, but I ended up going with a TLD A3 for true comfort!
I too have a dropframe and oh man I am so impressed by the performance and as you mentioned I also needed an l instead of an m but that is no big deal for me
I was all about the half shell for enduro and full face for downhill until I missed a step-down double last year. I spent a few days in a Level 1 trauma center, underwent emergency facial reconstruction surgery, and had to learn how to drink through a straw again. Now I'm one of the nerds grinding up Tiger/Galbraith in a full face. It took awhile to stop feeling self-conscience about overdoing protection levels, but hey, I'm back in the saddle and getting in trouble. It seems like more people are doing it, too.. It's TLD Stage for enduro now. Bonus- chin-mount for camera angles.
Well done Jeff you turned what could be a boring technical review into a entertaining and really informative video. Helmets don’t seem to get enough love in review videos but honestly it is one of the most important things a biker will purchase. I have to admit I can spend hours going over bike specs and geo numbers before making a purchase and then just buy a helmet because I like how it looks. This video made me re-think that and I will go do some research now on the projection ratings of my current helmets and see if maybe I should upgrade.
I have owned numerous brands of helmets over the last 30 yrs of mtn biking and Giro has become my go to brand. Their shoes fit me well also and like their helmets, they always have a style or fit I like for my personal budget.
I’d highly recommend the Giro Fixture MIPS for anyone on a budget. It’s pretty comfortable, and both myself and some of my friends have had some gnarly crashes where the helmet definitely did it’s job.
it saved my life in a crash i had off a 2m drop i went over the bars going at 30kph and twisted my neck and broke my helmet in half but becuase the mips rolled my head it stopped me from geting paralised i highly recomend mips
@@Lordoftheflamesissketchy i had a very similar crash off of a 3 foot drop. Made a stupid mistake and went otb. I blacked out for 5 to 10 seconds. Currently recovering!
I have been running a Giro Tyrant for 2 years and I highly recommend it. One of the upsides to this helmet is the incredible durability, I have crashed into trees at about 30 kmh (18 mph for the Americans) and the helmet has not cracked or been damaged, I'm planning on replacing it soon just to freshen it up a bit but I cannot explain how much I like it.
Just went through the process of getting a new trail helmet. After trying ~5 different premium offerings from the large brands, I settled on the Giro Manifest. Crash ratings are very important to me but fit is king. You want a helmet that disappears on the ride. I don't ever notice the Manifest when riding. If a helmet isn't comfortable then you won't want to wear it or it will become distracting. Same applies for full faced and even motorcycle helmets.
I bought a 2021 Fox Speedframe Pro MIPS recently, before I had seen any of this. It's good to know my own research led me to one of the safest helmets made. I was previously using an ABUS helmet and while very light and VERY breazy, I just never felt that it would protect my melon in a crash. Different with the Speedframs Pro tho, I like this helmet immensely and I feel safe wearing it!
Just upgraded (post crash!) to a POC Kortal Race MIPS helmet, amazingly comfortable, cool tech features (NFC medical ID and Recco reflector) and looks great…spendy at $250 US, but loving it so far.
Had a crash in my kortal, rock puncture the shell right around the temple. Didn’t even have a head ache after. And their crash replacement it awesome! Spendy, but worth every penny!
Really informative video! I carefully considered all the helmets here before going to my local bike shop and falling in love with the Fox drop frame. It fits my head perfectly, and feels SO safe. Ive never had a helmet with a visor, so shielding my eyes from the sun is pretty kush. Hopefully I’ll never have to actually put the helmet to the test 🤞😵💫
Great video with lots of good info from you. Thanks for taking the time to explain so much. And how long to keep a helmet! It's time for me to get a new one lol!! After flying through the air head first into a pile of boulders a few years ago, I rarely wear anything but a full face. They give me confidence and I've gotten very used to them. But for a chill ride, I'll put on the regular shell. Even at 52 yrs old my inner child still gets sendy though lol! I guess that's what happens when you grow up in steep terrain.. Thanks again Jeff and stay stoked!
I just had to switch away from the Fox speed frame, because here in Phoenix we ride at first and last light in the summer and the fox visor won't come down far enough to block sunlight in your eyes. Got a Kali, better.
Yeah, the Kali Maya visor is really good. That's probably my favorite feature of the Maya. I wish more helmet companies would embrace the big visor. Thus far the Switchblade visor at 130mm is the best one I've used yet. If I can get a moment, I'll try throwing that visor on the Tyrant.
Agree with you the Fox Speed Frame Pro is my go to helmet. It is cooler and for my head (oval) a great fit. Previously I used Giro and loved them but needed a cooler helmet here is So Cal. The Fox works and is better fit after adjustment.
Thank you for the review. I ended up buying a Fox Speedframe. It fits me well, but I needed to add a pad in the back - as Fox recommended going with the larger size if you are on the border between sizes. The 100mm visor seems to be fine, but I am pretty inexperienced to MTB. I like the MIPS system too. Thank you for all your videos. Very relatable information and presentation!
I've ridden Bell helmets for a long time, and will throw it out there that Giro and Bell are owned by the same company and many of their helmets share technology. I just got a Super Air R and I love how light it is for a full face helmet, but then I can remove the chinbar and it becomes a standard half-shell helmet. Wish it had a magnetic closure though...
I’ve been using the speedframe pro for my trail helmet for about 4 months now and I love it. Most comfortable helmet i’ve ever had. And I was lucky enough to get one in red and black.
GREAT video. That being said, what I got most from it is that I 100% will need to go into shops to try them on and most likely I’d just buy it there instead of buying it online.
Never knew you rode a Vstrom! I had two 650's at the same time (18 & 19). Sold them both a couple years ago and my motorcycle days are done. Loved those bikes for moto camping! Thanks!
I've done a few moto camping trips on the STROM, it's a fun bike. I have a 2014 1000. I'm actually enjoying it more than anticipated. Got it for $5k, which is about half what the 1290s go for, leaving a smidge of budget available to get another dirt bike!!!
Helmet shopping is the worst for my ~63cm oval head. I am currently shopping for a new helmet so I appreciate this to hear some opinions on helmets I was looking at. (Edit 63cm just saw that. 63mm would also be an evil helmet to find. Original said 63mm not cm for head size.)
Troy Lee Designs A2 here. It looks killer, and is very well ventilated. I feel safe in it, but it's quite large and/or bulky. 60cm balloon head so went for XL/XXL 😶🤙 Seems like the Fox Speedframe may have a more snugly fit. Gonna check it out. Looks great too.
Thanks Jeff! My last helmet broke (ok, I tossed it on the ground, don't do that) and I grabbed a Fox Speedframe Pro based on your video. It's perfect for me!
@4:15 exactly what I did same shoulder but I hit the tree without my bike attached to me Superman stylee, shattered shoulder in 3 places, 22 pieces snapped off it, and dislocated it. Metal plate, 6 months into 12 months of physio and just been told I need 2 more ops. It's all good fun until it's agony lol gorgeous paramedic helicopter lady said I was being very stoic and that coupled with the nitrous oxide and morphine had me feeling pretty damn good lol. I was just glad it wasn't my right arm that was out of action as I'm right handed and ALL the pleasure would've been gone :-) Wasn't wearing an helmet and just back on the bike the other day, still haven't got an helmet, never had an helmet, but my sister wants to get me one for Christmas. I'm looking at the Giro Fixture but was led here so thought I'd check these out. Thanks for the review!
I realize this vid is a bit older. Just wanted to say that it’s pretty well-known (by now, anyway) that you unfortunately have to size up in the Dropframe. I got an XL and it fits great, and Fox also includes extra pads for adjustment. Very comfy and secure, though it’s definitely hotter than my POC Kortal half-shell (no duh).
Man riding on west coast is so awesome I am north east guy just getting into mtb was a motocross bmx pro cant wait too find flow and bmx style jumps trails
Looking for a bit more protection I got the Giro Tyrant to replace my Bell Sixer. It's comfortable and protection is great, BUT THE VISOR IS WAY TOO SMALL. I tend to ride in the mornings and got tired of squinting into the sun. So I've gone back to the Bell Sixer for now. Giro Tyrant is a great helmet except for the visor - wish I could return it.
@JeffKendallWeed The new Fox Dropframe Pro has you covered now with BOA in the back. I just replaced my old Pro version after a big crash. But beware Fox has changed sizing on this new lid. A straight Medium swap was too big and I had to go to a Small.
Great video! I was going to get the Fox Speedframe Pro as a replacement for my broken helmet, but got a good deal on the POC Tectal Race spin. It fits really well for those of us who're between a M & L size.
Nicely done video. My Speedframe just saved my ass last week. Took a head shot in a rock garden at speed. I felt the mips move on my head and soften the blow on impact. Walked away with a slight concussion, but felt like it could have been so much worse. Looking at half shells for my next lid.
Hey Jeff I appreciate you mentioning that the eps foam is only good after one crash. I fell of my bike trying to avoid a fallen tree's root system hit a rock and fell about 6ft off the trail before braking the fall with my head and being pinned between two fallen trees. I now have some good dents in my helmet and am looking for and upgrade. I know I will get a new helmet probably one with an angi system on it as I ride alone most times and it took me a good 15 minutes to get back up to the trail from where I landed. It would be nice to have the extra security of a system that calls if I am too hurt to get myself out of a predicament or knocked unconscious.
I just ordered the Bontrager Blaze WaveCel. It has the funny inner shell so it is a bit heavy and some people complain about the heat, but I like that it blocks the sun a little. Skin cancer stinks.. been there, done that. "$25 head, get a $25 helmet." I like that you didn't get too hung up on price.
Great video! Helmets are so hard to review since everyone's head is different. I picked up a Kali Maya 2.0 from your time with them a couple years ago and love it. I also really wanted to try a POC, and while it's ok (Axiom), it's not great in my opinion, and I often find myself reaching for the Kali.
Great video! How often should you replace your helmet? I haven't been in any major crashes that would warrant replacing it, but have been using my current one probably for close to 5 years. I been thinking of replacing mine, but not sure if I need to.
I'd start looking, plus I like having a spare helmet. I keep a light mount on the spare, or it can be used by someone who forgets one or just a new rider who may not have one...
Giro's and Fox always seem to fit my noggin' pretty well. I am a fan of the Speedframe Pro, priced decently, solid features and fits me perfect. I recently wrecked and hit my head pretty hard on a rock wearing one. Put a nice dent in the side right above the ear. But walked away without a concussion (can't same the same about my fractured ribs), so it did it's job. Ordered a new one as soon as I got home.
There is a reason the MX folks wear full face, much safer. I amputated my nose wearing an open face helmet racing MX back in 79. If I rode enduro or downhill would only wear a F/F. Since I'm 61 and only ride XC I wear a open face. Oh yea, 1994 landed on my head after a 25' drop on my MX bike. If I had a open face I would be dead. The chin bar was ripped off. Only suffered 5 frontal skull fractures, thankfully the chin bar took a good amount of the impact.
Awesome Video Jeff! I recently picked up a POC Kortal to replace a TLD A2 that I had. My wife asked me why I need a new helmet and my answer was because this one is safer 😂🤘👍
I was hoping to see a review of the POC helmets. I have one, and I kind of want to know if my problems with fitting sunglasses are unique to me. Actually, I would've liked to see that covered more in general here, but I guess no news is good news? No trouble with glasses with any of these? I was surprised that you spoke so glowingly about the Giro Tyrant given those closed ears. No way to put in and out earbuds with that.
I really hate ones that cover my ears. Messes with my ability to locate sounds, and often ger wind noise. Weird that you prefer them, it's a total no-go for me, and my buddies.
My TLD helmets have generally been good! comfy and stylish. I do wish they were more durable, and that they had a bigger coverage option without it being a full face.
Visors are important for a lot of reasons, I had a crash in a January’s over the bars, I hit hard o. The ground face first and my visor took a lot impact, it snapped, but I got a new one, I still got a blond oh nose and a big bruise, but after visiting dentists and doctors since they said I would have chipped at least my center 4 teeth, broken my nose, and easily my prescription glasses. Visors are important and I will always find a long visor from this day on
I’ve been shopping for a new helmet. I appreciate the timing and your insight. I currently have from newest to oldest. Oakley DHRT (heavy but nice) TLD A2 (light but bulky looking) Giro Montero (my favorite but not that many vents)
I love my Fox Dropframe. PLENTY of air flow.I raced motocross for many years so I know what I can trust.I don't think I would trust anything else out there right now as far as light weight helmets.Plus it looks bad ass.I love your style of ridding.I ride very similar so my equipment has to be durable..I don't need anymore concussions..
I bought the dropframe pro and oh man, I've never had such a comfortable open-face helmet.
loved my Dropframe until I got Bose Tempo glasses. The way the sides come down so much , combined with the strap placement, put pressure on my temples with the glasses. Not horrible, but I ended up going with a TLD A3 for true comfort!
I too have a dropframe and oh man I am so impressed by the performance and as you mentioned I also needed an l instead of an m but that is no big deal for me
Happy to hear the dropframe pro has good reviews, mine gets here Tommorow.
Is the sizing accurate? I took a large but my circumference is a 57cm
I dont know if I need a medium?
I was all about the half shell for enduro and full face for downhill until I missed a step-down double last year. I spent a few days in a Level 1 trauma center, underwent emergency facial reconstruction surgery, and had to learn how to drink through a straw again. COOL story bro
Hope u recovered ok man!
You do whatever the F you feel like doing to keep yourself safe brother. It’s your skull. Your brain. Protect it. Hope you’re doing even better today!
Jeff I appreciate your energy. Your videos cheer me up.

Has your head returned to normal shape?
Troy Lee A2 has been good to me in AZ. It has some of the better venting of lids I've tried.
Great feedback Joey!!!
Troy Lee Designs A2 here. It looks killer, and is very well ventilated. I feel safe in it, but it's quite large and/or bulky. 60cm balloon head so went for XL/XXL 😶🤙

Excellent video. I wish I had half your skill on a bike!
Hey mate any chance you've tried the trek rally and blaze helmets at all? They both look pretty good...
You have an incredible way of mountain biking we should name it after you, beautiful.
Great information due for an upgrade

I tend to ride in the mornings and got tired of squinting into the sun. So I've gone back to the Bell Sixer for now. Giro Tyrant is a great helmet except for the visor - wish I could return it.
I was entertained by your riding skills, I totally forgot about the helmet you are talking about LOL
Bell Super air R the mips IS the soft foam multi-hit liner it is one of the best helmet to protect your brain.
And it has a removable chin bar...
I've been Running the Fox Speedframe for my last 3 helmets now, and I love it. Perfect, comfy, safe half shell. Love the Speedframe!
I'm an Enduro biker as well using O'Neal helmets, but I can say that you are a far way better rider than me, no question!! Ride safe..😊
This guy freaking shreds! Test any POC helmets out by chance?
@JeffKendallWeed The new Fox Dropframe Pro has you covered now with BOA in the back. I just replaced my old Pro version after a big crash. But beware Fox has changed sizing on this new lid. A straight Medium swap was too big and I had to go to a Small.

Thanks man! Yeah I feel like getting hung up on price when they are within $100 isn't a good way to spend time in a video like this.
I miss the old Troy Lee d2 open face helmet, that thing was rad
I love my Tyrant, surprisingly cool and very comfortable. I sometime forget that I'm riding and open face.
Great video! Helmets are so hard to review since everyone's head is different. I picked up a Kali Maya 2.0 from your time with them a couple years ago and love it. Fox Drop frame seems to run too small. I recommend to size up if you are interested.
Great video Jeff👍
Thanks Mike!
About to purchase the Tyrant and keen to know what size you run and your head measurement. Cheers man
danm throwing shade at barcia xD
Any opinions on Smith helmets? The Forefront 2 or the Session?
Hey RH, I Haven't used any smith helmets since the first model back in the day.
Great video!
How often should you replace your helmet? I haven't been in any major crashes that would warrant replacing it, but have been using my current one probably for close to 5 years.
I been thinking of replacing mine, but not sure if I need to.
Most manufacturers say after 5 years so now sounds like a good time
Usually manufacturers recommend replacing every 4-5 years, so this would be a great time to purchase a new helmet.
I'd start looking, plus I like having a spare helmet. I keep a light mount on the spare, or it can be used by someone who forgets one or just a new rider who may not have one...
I've been loving my TLD A2 in the HOT Okanagan summer this year!
Nice! I do wish the A2 had a bigger visor and a fidlock, but it's a great helmet as it is!!!!
I know I'm late to the party, but love the Justin Barcia reference! Hope he can 4- peat this weekend!
Giro's and Fox always seem to fit my noggin' pretty well. I am a fan of the Speedframe Pro, priced decently, solid features and fits me perfect. Awesome Video Jeff! I recently picked up a POC Kortal to replace a TLD A2 that I had. My wife asked me why I need a new helmet and my answer was because this one is safer 😂🤘👍
A lotta votes for Poc here in the comments!
Any issues with eyewear fit? I have Oakley Flaks for reference.
Would you go for a helmet without mips tech?
Like the ixs trigger am?
Love my Fox Speedframe Pro.
Love my speedframe. On my 2nd. Had a big crash and cracked one. Kept my mellon safe without incident!
Glad to hear of the positive outcome!
What was the full rigid bike you were doing trials moves on?
Love my Giro Tyrant!
Right on Bean, me too!
why don't you like the speedframe pro in white? I really like the colorway but I'm concerned about stains and such was that why you didn't like it?
Oh man I’ve loved that helmet! Not quite as comfy as a giro but really good for the price!
What about POC Kortal, Smith, and Lazer Impala?
Hello! How does the giro switchblade compare to the bell super air 3 ?? Would love some feed back tia
New to mountain biking. Giro Tyrant is it! Like the idea of the extra ear protection ☺
Hey man. I’m about to buy one but can’t work out sizes ? What size is your head measure and what size helmet did you go with? Cheers mate
I just bought the switchblade and am waiting for it to come in the mail.
I just want to be able to manual everything like you do.
I really hate ones that cover my ears. Messes with my ability to locate sounds, and often ger wind noise.
Weird that you prefer them, it's a total no-go for me, and my buddies.
Happy with my Fox Mainframe with its 5 star rating at $50.
Was POC on the list? Love their helmets!
I just picked up the Bell Sixer and really like it... light and airy with great ventilation and a GoPro mount. NOT cheap though...
No longer supported by Kali protectives? What happened?
Great edit 👍
Thanks Crazy!
Well done on creating an informative helmet video. Also, love the trials footage. Do you own that trials bike?
Yes I do! That's my old Inspired Hex 26". I suck on that thing.
I just got the 3rd one and I can honestly say I've never been so happy with a product before
Great comparison. 👌
Im super happy with my Troy Lee A3
My TLD helmets have generally been good! comfy and stylish. I do wish they were more durable, and that they had a bigger coverage option without it being a full face.
Srsly, the dropframe pro is legit. It's comfy as fuck!!!
Holy cow that crash looked really bad. Glad you are ok.
I would like a brain bucket where you can use it again after a huge bump on the head. These things are ridiculously expensive
Visors are important and I will always find a long visor from this day on
Hopefully visors become cool again!!!
I’ve been shopping for a new helmet. I appreciate the timing and your insight. I currently have from newest to oldest. Oakley DHRT (heavy but nice) TLD A2 (light but bulky looking) Giro Montero (my favorite but not that many vents)
Thanks man!
Check the giro radix mips, good venting . I wear the A2 for more technical trail and the radix for xc. Good combo
Thanks Mike! Ya let's both ride that No More Concussion train!!!
