Its great that you take the time to talk about etiquette, fish handling, littering etc. Really appreciate that you are helping ensure that we can all continue to enjoy this lovely country and the great fishing. Thanks bro
As a grad student with two jobs im always excited when one of you're videos drop. You're fishing is practically my fishing at this point in time. Thanks heaps for the content!
Fantastic!! It looks so simple, but I'm sure it's not. I will be completely surprised when I can hopefully enjoy the summer of 2022/2023 for five weeks, after two postponements due to the pandemic.
I just started fly fishing about 6 weeks ago and it is such a blast. I bought the Orvis encounter to start but I've already upgraded to the new Redington field kit that just came out and I'm so excited to get it and use it. I found your channel recently and all I can say is you make excellent videos and you help keep the fishing itch at bay while I'm at work almost daily lol Keep up the awesome content. Cheers from Montana
Hi Alex, As always are your videos great to watch. It made me extra happy to see that you got one of those ''Monomasters'' for your tippet rests. I also liked that you tell all fishermen to take care of nature and that they should take their flies with them back home. Papa Smurf is no good name for your rod. I like ''Old Blue'' better. Cheers bro
Another awesome days fishing u had Alex 👌👌. I was out at weekend . New venue. Caught 1 had 4 on and 4 off. Lol that's why they call it fishing not catching.lol. tube flys are great. Plus ur fly lasts a bit longer to. I'm like u I guess. I prefer the tranquil of the water and the fishing, also wonderful scenery too. No one else around to bother me and nick my fishing spots.. Flipping fantastic..🤣🤣🤜🤛

That swing section was just like fishing for atlantic salmon here in Norway, main diff beeing a LOT larger rivers and fish but the changing of set up and flies etc is similar. Great stuff as usual:)
Tight lines to you in Norway. Ditto here for rigging in the PNW (USA). I run tube flies in the winter more as we get some wicked flows. Heavy dumbbell and tungsten rigs, the tube is nice to keep hook up and the fly out.
@@Avicados i prefer the heavy sinking lines 2-4-6 / 3-5-8 short leaders and light flies in cold water since the fish tend to stand in calmer water but as i still want to get down deep and have a lively flie this is what i do here for our atlantic salmon. Not sure if you are allowed to use the heavy lines there tho and not sure if the fish behave the same way.
@@MrKveite1 I find myself on t12 and weighted flies quite often. So I guess both but I do prefer to go no weight on the fly when I can for movement purposes like yourself.
Was just wondering... what's the reason for dry fly fishing not being as big of a scene in NZ as in other places? I know you use a dryfly with a nymph under it (though it's not the season right now) sometimes, but for most people in scandinavia and england dry fly fishing is that thing that people long for all through winter. Most people I know rather try on the dry fly for the entire evening and go home with nothing than to nymph or stream. Are the trout not as prone to rise in NZ? Great vid as always! 👊
We just don’t have huge amounts of dry fly action here. No big hatches and most food is found sub surface that’s all. You can get fish on top here but if you can’t nymph, you will miss the majority of shots!
@@TrippinOnTrout I see. Unfortunate really since dry fly takes are the best 😆 What few insects hatches on the river? Cicadas drop into the water every now and then I've seen...
The Flycraft fly you swung with first has a subtle recurve on it? I've always wondered why there aren't more recurve hooks used for trout fishing, especially when you're barbless.
How do you attach your net as you move around and especially as you’re wading/standing out in the water. Mine just dangles and causes all sorts of problems.
Hi Alex, love to see you do your “mend”! All ways reminds me of the gillie saying to me “that was a very agricultural mend Sir!”. Have been practicing very hard since but its not as instinctive as yours. Told you before, try the next few pools down now you have made the effort of crossing the stream! Cheers mate. Harera
Enjoyed the video ( thumbs up, of course ). I'll have to give that swingy thingy a try one of these days. Perhaps next Summer on my favorite river in Montana. I've joined you on Patreon as I want to chip in to you producing your latest videos... ;-)
Changing the tippet is probably the thing to do. But I know I would have done the same as you did. And it payed off. Hope your luck does not change, as taking the fly from the tree. It could be some sort of Taboo. Good luck mate. Sleep well. Shaun.
About this over lining your rod. You are using sa infinity smooth. I’ve been using sa mpx line for about 2 years and I’ve noticed that SA makes their line about 1 line weight to lite? Fishing with a Loop opti stream and looking at the opti line and noticed that both loop lines and rio are matching weight +- a few 0.1g but SA was of by over 1g which seems to equate to about 1 Line weight. So seems like you ”have to” overline by 1 weight to get the ”actuall” lineweight to match other lines. Anyone else noticed this? Also awesome vid, working on watching every single video and almost done! Favorite youtuber without question!
@@gkeightysix that is possible, just comparing what I’ve seen, aince I use the loop opti stream rod in a 5 weight, and if I look at the loop opti stream line 5 weight and compare it to SA then Loop is about 1.2g(if I remember corectly) heavier and wouldn’t it make sence if loop made that line to match that rod? Just my train of thought seem to say that sa is under weight and not the other way? Maby I might be wrong tho always up to learn👍
The marketing material for some of the rio lines say that they are made a full line weight heavy so sa is probably technically correct… at the end of the day just do what works for you
No Papa Smurf no that is not a fishing term have anything to do with fishing it just doesn't fit. How about " old blue " " Trusty blue " " Misty blue "

I fished the same pool at the start of the video with Gareth back in July. Pulled 10 out of there in a hour
Yes very excited about about the new season and what it has to come a bring and I do recognise the pool familiar great vid great work 👍
Outstanding. Ur videos are always so interesting and so well edited it often times seems you have a filming crew and a Director doing the job.
Nice one Alex!!!!

It’s not a Monomaster actually, it’s a design my buddy has come up with. Same kinda idea tho.

No but I keep meaning to!
