The sound is to do with the image stabilization. Updating the firmware to 1.5 significantly reduces the sound. It is normal for the E-M5 to make this sound. Hope this helps
i've just bought this, haven't even a clue how to work a camera but i saw my friends flickr page and he used this exact camera and so told me the name of it, his photo's are really stunning, can't wait for it to arrive
Amazing review and great tips! This camera has exceeded my expectations for dslr especially with the speed of the focus and the evf! And also the electronic and manual aperture simplify the process.. can't wait to hopefully grab one of these! Great video ..

How could that be when I turn off the in body IS completely?
Steve, I wish you had attached the bottom part of the grip, at least for a while, so we could see it in your hand. Just seeing it separately doesn't properly convey proportions.
I sold my NEX-7+24mm lens and now have the E-M5 kit plus 45mm. I actually really like the E-M5's EVF. Might not be as crisp as the NEX-7's but it's pretty close and there's almost no lag when viewing it in low light areas. Anyways, saving up for the 12mm f2 lens now =]
My god, it's so fast that the touchscreen focusing now makes sense and fun.
The noise is the In body IS system. Its an always on system so its always adjusting as you move it.
I heard you can change it so the IS only activates when you press the shutter button.
the sound is coming from IBIS of the camera, from olympus explanation is that the sensor is floating in the air when it is turn on,that's what created the 5 axis motion.funny thing is, as soon as you switch it to movie mode the sound goes away, hope there is a fix for that.

They do have the 12mm in black, but its a special edition, so it costs a bit more. The cost difference isn't much more when you think about it - you get a metal lens hood, metal lens cap, and bragging rights since its a special edition item.
The NEX-6 will have a narrower DOF for a given aperture and focal length because it has a larger sensor. f/2.8 on the OM-D is equivalent to f/5.6 on a full frame, whereas f/2.8 on the NEX-6 is equivalent to f/4.2 on a full frame.
However, the lenses available for the NEX-6 are typically slower than the lenses available for the OM-D, and that cancels out the larger sensor's DOF advantage. For example, the 25mm f/1.4 for the OM-D and the 35mm f/1.8 for the Sony have roughly the same DOF.

The noise is from the 5 axis image stablizer gyroscope
I've gone back and forth in my mind over which camera looks better, silver/black or black/black. Watching this video again (watched it a long time ago) has confirmed, you gotta go black/black. So sexy. Who cares if the silver lenses don't match. It is like the NEX system, doesn't look too bad. Plus as people point out, the silver lenses are not the exact same silver color as the silver of the OMD.
Olympus needs a 25mm f1.4 micro 4/3rds for this camera. Sure like the function setup on screne-looks to be very useful.
The Sony NEX-5N was and is still overheating
I think this is the upgrade they did to this camera for that overheating problem
By adding the fan; the overheating can and might be corrected
I believe that sound is from the internal sensory shift mechanism.. my pentax use to do similiar... but this is little louder.

I've had my E-M5 for 6 weeks now. Have never heard any fan noise. Unfortunately 2 weeks ago it went into a ultra dark world on all settings. Now at Olympus service.

Weather-proofing is only as good as its weakest link. If you have a non-weather-proof lens on the OM-D, water/dust will sink in the lens and through the lens mount. It doesn't matter if the adapter is weather proof or not. But you need all 3 to be weather-proof to protect your camera.
Besides, the MMF3 adapter will only take FT lenses, you can't fit a MFT lens like the 12mm and 45mm on it anyway, It would be like fitting them on a FT DSLR. It wouldn't work.

Updating the firmware should get rid of the noise. It did with mine.

I heard photographers complain about steady noise coming from the built in stabilizer even switched off!
20mm ƒ/1.7 is definitely one of the best lenses too.
are you sure? i mean the mmf-3 four thirds adapter! it is weatherproof and dustproof why would they build an adapter which is weatherproof for non weatherproof lenses?

Will you make a short comparison with the NEX-7? I mean after all they're pretty similarly priced. Just as a short list (AF, EVF, body quality, IQ, video, ...). Oh, and maybe consider manual focus in your videos. If you keep the distance most of the time the same it works great. And for fast changes, you always got peaking mode.
From what I've heard, the noise is coming from the EVF stabilizer.
That's weird it the sound should be the IBIS. When i shut mine off it didn't make that sound anymore when i put it on it makes the sound.
Interesting about the fan. Wonder how it would perform under high temps?
No Optical Viewfinder and Doesn't support 24p.....So Should i go for Fuji x100s/Fuji x20?
Or maybe Panasonic GH2 or Pentax K5iis ? (All under £700)

@stevehuff1969 While I won't deny that those two are great lenses...aren't you limiting yourself to just 24mm and 90mm equivalent(very wide and portrait/telephoto)?
Indeed, the Panasonic 25/f1.4 is the best m43 lens by far, even though the Oly 45/f1.8 is the best bargain.
I think the noise is feedback from the internal mic.

Some camera can overheat in video mode when using high ISO's. Maybe that's why there is a fan.
This is why Sony on the A65 and A77 and Nex 7 locks the ISO at 1600 in video mode because the cameras can overheat.

good luck finding the fuji x100s for less than $1000, believe me i tried everything to get a fuji, the x20 yes, it's a lot cheaper, panasonic and the pentax are also expensive (around $1000 on amazon).Personally i got the EM-5 just because is right in he middle of what i really wanted, see, every camera has pros and cons, i guess what did it for me was the quality of olympus lenses, mind you i was really close to buy the sony nex 6, but sony lenses are not good enough for that camera.

am I better of getting a Sony NEX 6 or the OMD ? which has better shallow DOF? does the OMD still have faster auto focus? would not the NEX6 have better low light?
can you get any shallow DOF with the all around lenses or the long zoom lenses for it - would I only get shallow DOF with a super fast prime?

Love the 1.7 aperture but in this situation you should be shooting at at least f4.0 because you are so close. I'd rather have digital noise but clear video than good bokeh but no focus. Sorry I like your videos but I just wanted to mention it to you for constructive criticism.

I commend Olympus for bringing out a weather-proof camera, but I wish they had more foresight when they were designing lenses too. I doubt this camera was rushed to market and wasn't planned a while ago.
Their DSLR FT lenses were much more thought through and logical in features. MFT is all over the place.

@stevehuff1969 I can't decide between e-m5 and xpro-1. Im thinking of buying a new camera but its very hard to decide. e-m5 is awesome camera. I always wanted to have 4/3 camera but its kind of expensive with the lenses. Yeah its small, rapid and very nice but is image quality good enough? I mean I can get nikon d3200 and lenses much more cheaper and a little bit bigger. But if I buy xpro-1 its image quality is magnificent as full frame cameras like 5dmarkIII. But Im also horrified about the AF.

Its not a fan. Its the in body Image stabilization running.

Perhaps next time you should capture the video with a cheap compact camera instead. The focusing problems and rolling shutter jelly-like shaking are quite annoying.

I bought the camera, but like others i want to shoo Bracketing with self timer, how can i do ....can you help please
So I got my EM5 yesterday, and really gone toying around, with some settings today. These were [relevant] settings, I came across on menu:
Off Shooting Menu 2-
Bracketing (choose Frame Ct / Exp. increments)
Drive Mode (choose timer needed)
The Verdict: It does work, but, with a caveat... You need to engage the shutter, for every frame involved (normal exp --> under exps --> over exps)
Can you use panasonic lenses on this one?
I'm not certain what is wrong with your omd but mine does not make that noise lol

Here in the southern California desert in Palm Springs CA we laugh at flat panel display cameras, and their dazed and blinded users. The real world sun is so bright and the glare is so intense you can't read iPhones, iPads, nor the flat panel display on your camera. What you see is a bright distorted reflection of the sun, then you go blind. So, what's a body to do? We find that we MUST HAVE a great EVF. Congrats for OLYMPUS OM-D for the nice looking EVF. It may save your vision some day.

If this really offend you I'm so sorry but ITS CALLED PREFOCUS!!!! using manual focus. some of videos he does manual focus which is awesome. I also know that filming with Sony Nex7 isn't the faster focus to film on that aperture.But looks like we have Big fan of Steve Huff. extremely disappointed with this camera. Crap quality when shooting subjects in bright light or flash. Skin is pasty & pastel looking. Going back to the Pen. For this price Olympus should just take this off the market.

I know it's called prefocus and he did prefocus, but the subject was moving, so prefocus isn't really the issue here. Nor is it me you're supposed to be convincing.
