Basically Olympus sets their liveview up to help you compose an image no matter how dark that image might be. Sony and the others will show you a black screen in the same situation. Once you learn that's what the olympus is doing it's easy to adjust. I suggest turning on the histogram, it's an easy way to know.

You've been through some of the same cameras as me: GF1, X100, and now, potentially the E-M5. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and taking the time.

I may have missed it, but if you didn't say so, it should be mentioned that the 20mm was one of the first m4/3 lenses, so it's focus is the slowest of all native lenses. Most lenses are significantly faster to focus on the E-M5 than what is seen here.

if you shooting raw in a crop format you can uncrop the raw file with the includet olympus viewer 2 software. the raw file is always complete, someway it contains the crop information so lightroom will show you only the croped image.

Watching this makes me glad I bought the Olympus 17mm f1.8 instead of the Lumix 20mm. When I was watching the camera focusing I was thinking how ridiculously slower it was compared to any of my lenses.
Then again, the 17mm costs a bunch, but I managed to get it new for $300... so, yeah.

Great review! I'm thinking about buying an OMD. I have PM1, and sold my DSLR a while back. But it is too big step back. I miss the controls and viewfinder more then I thought I would.

OMD has a mic input via a hotshoe adapter (this also avoids the humm). No output to listen to though. The IBIS is VERY nice for video though.

I'm in Montreal, Canada so thats not an option. I would easily pay 200-300 extra in duty fee's, etc. On top of both taxes. So it would be $1500-$1600 just for the body, and probably 2 weeks of shipping time (its very slow here).
I'm hawking all Canadian stores for a silver body only, and have been for over 1.5 month.
Since i sold my D300 and X100, i have been aching for a new camera, this is the one... if i can get my hands on it LOL!
BTW very nice review! Good info unlike most other reviews.

yeah, at least. With a wider lens and good technique you can get even more at times.

nice review as always. nice to year the little not so goods with the OMD - I have both the OMD and the NEX7. Both are great cameras. Price wise similar as for me one needs the grip on the OMD so that ups the price. With no mic out and the fan noise makes the OMD no good for video.
In image quality I think the NEX has a slight advange and takes the video. OMD takes the Focus as it is faster than NEX7. OMD has touch but not perfect. Sony has more lenses coming soon. but a nice hones review Ben

Hi Ben great video on the OMD, does the OMD require a lenses adapter for Panasonic lenses?

  • @benjaminbjacobsen
    @benjaminbjacobsen  11 років тому

yes, the 20 is notoriously slow. Interestingly enough though it's faster than canon's new 40mm on my 5Diii though...

Silly question. I noticed the live view isnt a 100% accurate. I set the camera to f22 and 1/4000 of a second indoors as a test and the screen still shows an image. While the live view image is dark it is still visible and still gives the impression of thats what the pic would be even tho I know the pic will be black. Does this happen on yours? I have live view boost off. I only ask because the NEX 7 and my A77 live is more accurate in low light.

nope, no adapter. All MFT bodies can use all MFT lenses w/o adapters.
